SERVICIO DIVINO

TERCER DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE LA EPIFANÍA—JESÚS ES LA LUZ

El profeta Isaías describió vívidamente a la humanidad como «un pueblo que camina en tinieblas». Luego profetizó que una luz brillaría sobre ellos. Envueltos en el pecado, el sufrimiento y la muerte, nuestras mentes y corazones se encuentran nublados. Pero Jesús se revela como la luz prometida. Él ilumina con su luz predicando el arrepentimiento y las buenas nuevas del reino. Nuestro Salvador es la Luz del mundo, y nosotros reflejamos su luz en todos los que nos rodean.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 8:19—9:4

El profeta predijo que las personas que caminaban en la oscuridad verían una gran luz.

19 Si alguien les dice: «Consulten a las pitonisas y a los agoreros que susurran y musitan; ¿acaso no es deber de un pueblo consultar a sus dioses y a los muertos, en favor de los vivos?», 20 yo les digo: «¡Aténganse a la ley y al testimonio!» Para quienes no se atengan a esto, no habrá un amanecer. 21 Ustedes habrán de enfurecerse cuando, angustiados y hambrientos, vaguen por la tierra. Levantando los ojos al cielo, maldecirán a su rey y a su Dios, 22 y clavando la mirada en la tierra, sólo verán aflicción, tinieblas y espantosa penumbra; ¡serán arrojados a una oscuridad total!

9 A pesar de todo, no habrá más penumbra para la que estuvo angustiada. En el pasado Dios humilló a la tierra de Zabulón y a la tierra de Neftalí; pero en el futuro honrará a Galilea, tierra de paganos, en el camino del mar, al otro lado del Jordán.

      2 El pueblo que andaba en la oscuridad
      ha visto una gran luz;
      sobre los que vivían en densas tinieblas
      la luz ha resplandecido.
      3 Tú has hecho que la nación crezca;
      has aumentado su alegría.
      Y se alegran ellos en tu presencia
      como cuando recogen la cosecha,
      como cuando reparten el botín.
      4 Ciertamente tú has quebrado,
      como en la derrota de Madián,
      el yugo que los oprimía,
      la barra que pesaba sobre sus hombros,
      el bastón de mando que los subyugaba.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 Juan 2:3–11

Los hijos de Dios caminan en la luz de Cristo viviendo en amor a Dios y los unos a los otros.

3 ¿Cómo sabemos si hemos llegado a conocer a Dios? Si obedecemos sus mandamientos. 4 El que afirma: «Lo conozco», pero no obedece sus mandamientos, es un mentiroso y no tiene la verdad. 5 En cambio, el amor de Dios se manifiesta plenamente en la vida del que obedece su palabra. De este modo sabemos que estamos unidos a él: 6 el que afirma que permanece en él, debe vivir como él vivió.

7 Queridos hermanos, lo que les escribo no es un mandamiento nuevo, sino uno antiguo que han tenido desde el principio. Este mandamiento antiguo es el mensaje que ya oyeron. 8 Por otra parte, lo que les escribo es un mandamiento nuevo, cuya verdad se manifiesta tanto en la vida de Cristo como en la de ustedes, porque la oscuridad se va desvaneciendo y ya brilla la luz verdadera.

9 El que afirma que está en la luz, pero odia a su hermano, todavía está en la oscuridad. 10 El que ama a su hermano permanece en la luz, y no hay nada en su vida que lo haga tropezar. 11 Pero el que odia a su hermano está en la oscuridad y en ella vive, y no sabe a dónde va porque la oscuridad no lo deja ver.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Mateo 4:12–23

Jesús predicó la luz del evangelio a un mundo sumido en la oscuridad de la incredulidad.

12 Cuando Jesús oyó que habían encarcelado a Juan, regresó a Galilea. 13 Partió de Nazaret y se fue a vivir a Capernaúm, que está junto al lago en la región de Zabulón y de Neftalí, 14 para cumplir lo dicho por el profeta Isaías:

15 «Tierra de Zabulón y tierra de Neftalí,

camino del mar, al otro lado del Jordán,

Galilea de los gentiles;

16 el pueblo que habitaba en la oscuridad

ha visto una gran luz;

sobre los que vivían en densas tinieblas

la luz ha resplandecido.»

17 Desde entonces comenzó Jesús a predicar: «Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca.»

18 Mientras caminaba junto al mar de Galilea, Jesús vio a dos hermanos: uno era Simón, llamado Pedro, y el otro Andrés. Estaban echando la red al lago, pues eran pescadores. 19 «Vengan, síganme—les dijo Jesús—, y los haré pescadores de hombres.» 20 Al instante dejaron las redes y lo siguieron.

21 Más adelante vio a otros dos hermanos: Jacobo y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que estaban con su padre en una barca remendando las redes. Jesús los llamó, 22 y dejaron en seguida la barca y a su padre, y lo siguieron.

23 Jesús recorría toda Galilea, enseñando en las sinagogas, anunciando las buenas nuevas del reino, y sanando toda enfermedad y dolencia entre la gente.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

SERMÓN Lucas 10:1-20

10 Después de esto, el Señor escogió a otros setenta y dos para enviarlos de dos en dos delante de él a todo pueblo y lugar adonde él pensaba ir. 2 «Es abundante la cosecha—les dijo—, pero son pocos los obreros. Pídanle, por tanto, al Señor de la cosecha que mande obreros a su campo. 3 ¡Vayan ustedes! Miren que los envío como corderos en medio de lobos. 4 No lleven monedero ni bolsa ni sandalias; ni se detengan a saludar a nadie por el camino.

5 »Cuando entren en una casa, digan primero: “Paz a esta casa.” 6 Si hay allí alguien digno de paz, gozará de ella; y si no, la bendición no se cumplirá. 7 Quédense en esa casa, y coman y beban de lo que ellos tengan, porque el trabajador tiene derecho a su sueldo. No anden de casa en casa.

8 »Cuando entren en un pueblo y los reciban, coman lo que les sirvan. 9 Sanen a los enfermos que encuentren allí y díganles: “El reino de Dios ya está cerca de ustedes.” 10 Pero cuando entren en un pueblo donde no los reciban, salgan a las plazas y digan: 11 “Aun el polvo de este pueblo, que se nos ha pegado a los pies, nos lo sacudimos en protesta contra ustedes. Pero tengan por seguro que ya está cerca el reino de Dios.” 12 Les digo que en aquel día será más tolerable el castigo para Sodoma que para ese pueblo.

13 »¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Si se hubieran hecho en Tiro y en Sidón los milagros que se hicieron en medio de ustedes, ya hace tiempo que se habrían arrepentido con grandes lamentos. 14 Pero en el juicio será más tolerable el castigo para Tiro y Sidón que para ustedes. 15 Y tú, Capernaúm, ¿acaso serás levantada hasta el cielo? No, sino que descenderás hasta el abismo.

16 »El que los escucha a ustedes, me escucha a mí; el que los rechaza a ustedes, me rechaza a mí; y el que me rechaza a mí, rechaza al que me envió.»

17 Cuando los setenta y dos regresaron, dijeron contentos: —Señor, hasta los demonios se nos someten en tu nombre.

18 —Yo veía a Satanás caer del cielo como un rayo—respondió él—. 19 Sí, les he dado autoridad a ustedes para pisotear serpientes y escorpiones y vencer todo el poder del enemigo; nada les podrá hacer daño. 20 Sin embargo, no se alegren de que puedan someter a los espíritus, sino alégrense de que sus nombres están escritos en el cielo.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Señor Jesucristo, tú eres la Luz que las tinieblas no pueden vencer. Destierra la oscuridad del pecado, la culpa y el miedo de nuestras vidas y deja que tu luz brille.

Tú, Señor, eres nuestra lámpara. Señor, convierte nuestra oscuridad en luz.

Abre nuestros labios para que proclamemos tu alabanza a quienes nos rodean. Da éxito a la obra de los misioneros mientras proclaman tu Palabra. Concede a tu Palabra de amor, paz y perdón el poder de ablandar los corazones endurecidos y guiar a las personas por tu camino.

Tú, Señor, eres nuestra lámpara. Señor, convierte nuestra oscuridad en luz.

Llamaste a tus primeros discípulos desde sus barcas y redes para que se convirtieran en pescadores de hombres. Señor de la mies, envía nuevos obreros a tu campo de cosecha. Llama a los jóvenes y guíalos a tu servicio de predicar y enseñar tu Palabra.

Tú eres el Señor de la vida. En tu gracia, concedes tiempo a las personas, y nuestro tiempo está en tus manos. Ilumina a las personas en todas partes e inspíralas a valorar toda vida, nacida y no nacida, joven y anciana, sana y enferma.

Te damos gracias por los pastores fieles. Concédeles conocimiento, sabiduría y valentía al proclamar tu Palabra. Dales fidelidad, coraje y perseverancia al guiar a tu pueblo.

Disipa la oscuridad de la tristeza y la incertidumbre de quienes sufren dolores físicos o emocionales [especialmente…]. Dales luz y esperanza con la promesa de tu presencia constante y tu propósito de obrar todas las cosas para el bien de quienes te aman.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY—JESUS IS THE LIGHT

The prophet Isaiah vividly described humanity as “people walking in darkness.” Then he foretold that a light would shine on them. Enveloped by sin, suffering, and death, we find our minds and hearts clouded. But Jesus is revealed as the promised light. He shines his light by preaching repentance and the good news of the kingdom. Our Savior is the Light of the world, and we reflect his light onto everyone around us.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. FIRST READING Isaiah 8:19—9:4

The prophet foretold that people walking in darkness would see a great light.

19When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20Consult God’s instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. 21Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. 22Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

1Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.

SECOND READING 1 John 2:3–11

God’s children walk in the light of Christ by living in love for God and for one another.

3We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 10Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

GOSPEL Matthew 4:12–23

Jesus preached the light of the gospel to a world in the darkness of unbelief.

12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
16the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”

17From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20At once they left their nets and followed him.

21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

10 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.
