SERVICIO DE LA PALABRA

PENTECOSTÉS 15 – VERDADERAS INESPERADAS – YO SOY EL GUARDÍAN DE MI HERMANO

Cuando surge un peligro, la mayoría de las personas instintivamente se alejan de él. Los incendios, la violencia, los accidentes y los desastres despiertan un deseo natural de buscar protección y seguridad. Sin embargo, los socorristas hacen lo contrario. Los bomberos, los policías y los paramédicos corren hacia las mismas situaciones de las que otros huyen. Entran en edificios en llamas, se acercan a situaciones violentas y se arrodillan junto a los heridos en medio del caos. Esta reacción es inesperada porque va en contra del instinto humano más básico.

Hoy Dios nos llama a ser socorristas espirituales cuando vemos a personas en peligro a causa del pecado. En lugar de buscar nuestra propia protección y comodidad, escogemos servirles a ellos y a nuestro Señor. Nuestra motivación es la gracia de Dios y su deseo de que toda la humanidad sea salva.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Gálatas 2:11–16

Pablo convence a su hermano Cefas (Pedro) de la verdad del evangelio.

11 Pues bien, cuando Pedro fue a Antioquía, le eché en cara su comportamiento condenable. 12 Antes que llegaran algunos de parte de Jacobo, Pedro solía comer con los gentiles. Pero cuando aquéllos llegaron, comenzó a retraerse y a separarse de los gentiles por temor a los partidarios de la circuncisión. 13 Entonces los demás judíos se unieron a Pedro en su hipocresía, y hasta el mismo Bernabé se dejó arrastrar por esa conducta hipócrita.

14 Cuando vi que no actuaban rectamente, como corresponde a la integridad del evangelio, le dije a Pedro delante de todos: «Si tú, que eres judío, vives como si no lo fueras, ¿por qué obligas a los gentiles a practicar el judaísmo?

15 »Nosotros somos judíos de nacimiento y no “pecadores paganos”. 16 Sin embargo, al reconocer que nadie es justificado por las obras que demanda la ley sino por la fe en Jesucristo, también nosotros hemos puesto nuestra fe en Cristo Jesús, para ser justificados por la fe en él y no por las obras de la ley; porque por éstas nadie será justificado.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Apostólico ~150 d.C.

Creo en Dios Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.

Y creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor; que fue concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo, nació de la virgen María, padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato, fue crucificado, murió, y fue sepultado; descendió al infierno; al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos, subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha, de Dios Padre Todopoderoso; y de allí vendrá de nuevo a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

PENTECOST 15 – UNEXPECTED TRUTHS – I AM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

When danger strikes, most people instinctively move away from it. Fire, violence, accidents, and disasters trigger a natural desire to find protection and safety. Yet first responders do the opposite. Firefighters, police officers, and paramedics run toward the very scenes others are fleeing. They enter burning buildings, approach violent situations, and kneel beside the injured in chaotic moments. This response is unexpected because it goes against basic human instinct.

Today, God calls us to be spiritual first responders when we see people in trouble because of sin. Instead of self-preservation and comfort, we choose service to them and to our Lord. Our motive is the grace of God and his desire for the salvation of all mankind.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, we confess our sins to God, our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ to forgive us.
Lord Jesus, grant us your forgiveness.

God, our heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We were born in sin and we keep on sinning.
We commit sins of thought, word and deed.

The good that we want to do, we do not do.
The evil that we do not want to do, this we keep on doing.

We repent of our sins that now weigh us down.

ABSOLUTION

God Almighty, our heavenly Father, has had mercy on us, and because of the perfect life, death, and resurrection of his beloved son, Jesus Christ, he has declared us not guilty.

In this forgiveness, we have the victory over death and eternal life in heaven with God. I declare to you what God has already done: You are forgiven.

FIRST READING Ezekiel 33:7–11

The Lord told Ezekiel if he didn’t warn the Israelites about their sin, he was going to hold Ezekiel accountable.

7“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 8When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 9But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.

10“Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. Paul wins his brother Cephas (Peter) over to the truth of the gospel.

11When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

15“We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles 16know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles' Creed ~150 AD

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
