SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—DISCIPLINED DISCIPLES

As we begin a new school year and look forward, we set our expectations according to the words of Christ! We can expect hard times, we can expect difficulties. But we ask that God help us face challenges with a faith-filled attitude knowing that they are not reasons to be discouraged, but rather encouraged by the evidence that our heavenly Father does what a good father does - he disciplines his children out of love. So we are disciplined disciples who have been changed by the Word of God.

HIMNO DE APERTURA  HL620 Con gran gozo y placer

1 Con gran gozo y placer
Nos volvemos hoy a ver;
Nuestras manos otra vez
Estrechamos.
Se contenta-el corazón
Ensanchándose de-amor:
Todos a-una voz a Dios
Gracias damos. (estribillo)

Estr  ¡Bienvenidos! ¡Bienvenidos!
Los hermanos hoy aquí
Nos gozamos en decir:
¡Bienvenidos! ¡Bienvenidos!
Al volvernos a reunir,
¡Bienvenidos!

2 Dios a todos ayudó,
Ni-un momento nos dejó,
Y-otra vez nos reunió,
¡Bienvenidos!
El Señor su-amor nos dio,
Su poder nos amparó,
Del peligro nos guardó,
¡Bienvenidos! (estribillo)

3 Dios nos guarde-en este-amor,
Para que de corazón,
Consagrados al Señor,
Le-alabamos:
En la-eterna reunión
Do no-habrá separación,
Ni tristeza ni-aflicción:

INVOCATION

The grace of our Lord T Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS CW93 p26

God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son T and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

THE WORD

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift of grace that we come into your presence and offer true and faithful service. Grant that our worship on earth may always be pleasing to you, and in the life to come give us the fulfillment of what you have promised; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 23:23–29

The Word of the Lord divides what is true from what is false.

23“Am I only a God nearby,”
declares the Lord,
“and not a God far away?
24Who can hide in secret places
so that I cannot see them?”
declares the Lord.
“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”
declares the Lord.

25“I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’ 26How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? 27They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget my name, just as their ancestors forgot my name through Baal worship. 28Let the prophet who has a dream recount the dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?” declares the Lord. 29“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

SECOND READING Hebrews 12:1–13

 The Hebrews who converted to Christianity were often divided from their friends and separated from their livelihood. How would they persevere? By fixing their eyes on Jesus.

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13“Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Hebreos 12:1–13

GOSPEL (in English and Karen) Luke 12:49–53

Jesus was fully aware that his work would cause division that would often cut close to home.

49“I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
♫ Praise be to you, O Christ.

Alleluia, alleluia!
    May the light which thou dost send
fill our songs with alleluias,
    alleluias without end!

6 God the Father, light-creator,
    to thee laud and honor be.
To thee, Light from Light begotten,
    praise be sung eternally.
Holy Spirit, light-revealer,

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Lord, you are always present. You know everything that is happening in your world and we know that you will act in your time.

Give us relief from our distress; have mercy on us and hear our prayer.

When we feel alone, we are never alone. You fill heaven and earth. You see and know all our needs.

Give us relief from our distress; have mercy on us and hear our prayer.

Let your light scatter the darkness of falsehood. Enlighten those who do not know you.
Let those who have your Word speak it clearly. Make your presence known to all the world.

Give us relief from our distress; have mercy on us and hear our prayer.

When we endure hardships, open our hearts and minds to learn from your discipline. When we suffer, draw us to you, the Father of our spirits. Strengthen our weak hands and feeble knees, and make straight paths for our feet.

Give us relief from our distress; have mercy on us and hear our prayer.

Give health and prosperity to all who are in authority, especially to the President and congress of the United States, the governor and legislature of this state, and to all our local authorities, that they may maintain peace and order for the good of your church and the spread of your gospel.

Give us relief from our distress; have mercy on us and hear our prayer.

You discipline us for our good that we may have a share of your holiness. Draw your people to yourself, especially those who suffer with heavy burdens [especially…]. Guide them in your truth and teach them, that they may have patient endurance to run the race set before them.

Give us relief from our distress; have mercy on us and hear our prayer.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

Hear us, Lord, as we bring you the prayers from the depths of our hearts.

Silent prayer.

O God, you count the number of the stars, and call them all by their names. Heal the contrite in heart, gather together the outcasts, and enrich us with the fullness of your wisdom; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

THE LORD'S SUPPER

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, he empowered his Church to be witnesses of Christ to the ends of the earth. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever:

SANCTUS CW93 p34 Holy, Holy, Holy

You are my God, and I will exalt you.
I will give you thanks, for you have become my salvation.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my T body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my T blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

♫ Amen.

AGNUS DEI CW93 p35 O Christ, Lamb of God

in the light of creation’s grand design,
in the lives of those who prove his faithfulness,
who walk by faith and not by sight. (v. 2)

2 By faith our fathers roamed the earth
with the pow’r of his promise in their hearts,
of a holy city built by God’s own hand,
a place where peace and justice reign. (Refrain)

we will fix our eyes on him, our soul’s reward.
Till the race is finished and the work is done,
we’ll walk by faith and not by sight.

3 By faith the prophets saw a day
when the longed-for Messiah would appear
with the pow’r to break the chains of sin and death
and rise triumphant from the grave. (v. 4)

4 By faith the church was called to go
in the pow’r of the Spirit to the lost
to deliver captives and to preach good news
in ev’ry corner of the earth. (Refrain)

5 By faith this mountain shall be moved
and the pow’r of the gospel shall prevail,
for we know in Christ all things are possible
for all who call upon his name. (Refrain)

(est. 2)

Por la fe caminamos junto-a-Él
Como viendo-al invisible, Protector;
Vivir por fe y no por ver. (estribillo)

estr Sus promesas como roca son;

Con poder del Espíritu de Dios;
Y las huestes del infierno no podrán

HYMN 870 O Church, Arise

1 O Church, arise and put your armor on;
    hear the call of Christ our captain.
For now the weak can say that they are strong
    in the strength that God has given.
With shield of faith and belt of truth
    we’ll stand against the devil’s lies;
an army bold whose battle cry is love,
    reaching out to those in darkness.

2 Our call to war—to love the captive soul,
    but to rage against the captor;
and with the sword that makes the wounded whole
    we will fight with faith and valor.
When faced with trials on ev’ry side,
    we know the outcome is secure,
and Christ will have the prize for which he died—
    an inheritance of nations.

3 Come see the cross, where love and mercy meet,
    as the Son of God is stricken;
then see his foes lie crushed beneath his feet,
    for the Conqueror has risen!
And as the stone is rolled away,
    and Christ emerges from the grave,
this vict’ry march continues till the day
    ev’ry eye and heart shall see him.

4 So Spirit come, put strength in ev’ry stride,
    give grace for ev’ry hurdle,
that we may run with faith to win the prize
    of a servant good and faithful.
As saints of old still line the way,
    retelling triumphs of his grace,
we hear their calls and hunger for the day
    when with Christ we stand in glory.

1 Levántate, iglesia del Señor,
    cíñete de Su-armadura;
Oye la voz de Cristo,-el Capitán;
    de Su fuerza-el débil tomará.
Con el escudo de la fe,
    al diablo no-hemos de temer.
Ejército, armado de amor,
    ve y-alcanza-a los perdidos.

2 Nuestra misión será servir y-amar,
    combatiendo-al enemigo.
La-espada de Su-Espíritu traerá
    libertad a los cautivos.
Aunque-haya pruebas por doquier,
    segura es Su salvación;
Jesús tendrá lo que ganó-al morir:
    una-herencia de naciones.

3 Mira-en la cruz la gracia-y el perdón,
    donde-el Hijo fue-inmolado;
Mas aplastados yacen a los pies
    del Señor Sus enemigos.
Conquistador, Se levantó,
    es Cristo quien resucitó;
Se cantará Su triunfo hasta que
    todo ojo pueda verlo.

4 Su-Espíritu nos llene de valor,
    nos dé fuerza-a cada paso.
Nos dé la fe para-el premio-obtener
    de un siervo fiel y bueno.
Los santos que lucharon ya
    celebran Su fidelidad;
Dios les guardó y-así nos guardará
    hasta-estar con Él en gloria.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Hear the prayer of your people, O Lord, that the lips which have praised you here may glorify you in the world, that the eyes which have seen the coming of your Son may long for his coming again, and that all who have received in his true body and blood the pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

BLESSING

Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another.
Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look on you with favor and T give you peace.

El Señor te bendiga y te guarde;
El Señor haga resplandecer su rostro sobre ti y tenga misericordia de ti;

CLOSING HYMN 876 Fight the Good Fight

1 Fight the good fight with all your might;
Christ is your strength and Christ your right.
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
your joy and crown eternally.

2 Run the straight race through God’s good grace;
lift up your eyes and seek his face.
Life with its way before us lies;
Christ is the path and Christ the prize.

3 Cast care aside, lean on your guide;
his boundless mercy will provide.
Lean, and the trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life and Christ its love.

4 Faint not nor fear, his arms are near;
he changes not, and you are dear.
Only believe, and you will see
