THE SERVICE

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY—JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD

For centuries Israel offered sacrifices to God for sin. Over and over, a substitute shed its blood to earn forgiveness. Then Jesus appeared, the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. He died as the substitute for sinful mankind. Connected to him by faith, you have new perspective and new motivation for living a Christian life.

Almighty God, you gave your one and only Son to be the light of the world. SECOND READING Colossians 2:6–15

The Lamb of God was flesh and blood so he could be sacrificed to win forgiveness of all our sins.

As the last and greatest of the prophets, John beautifully summarizes God’s plan of salvation by pointing to Jesus and calling him the Lamb of God.

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Merciful God, gracious Father, you have given us your only Son to be our Savior and have displayed the glory of your love to us in him. Firmly plant us and build us up in him. Strengthen us in faith and move us to reflect your love with thanksgiving.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Lord God, you are worthy to receive thanks and praise from all people. You created the world and all who live in it, and in your mercy you saved us. We give thanks to you for the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Though in very nature God, he took the nature of a servant and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. He offered himself as a sacrifice for sin and redeemed us from its curse and penalty. He rescued us from the terrors of death and restored eternal life with you. He conquered our enemies and gained for us the kingdom of grace and glory.

Bless us as we receive your Son’s body and blood, and lead us to remember his suffering, death, and resurrection. Forgive our sins and fill us with the hope of new life in heaven. Hear our praise and receive our thanks as we worship you—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Durante siglos, Israel ofreció sacrificios a Dios por sus pecados. Una y otra vez, un sustituto derramaba su sangre para obtener el perdón. CONFESIÓN

Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad.
Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios, que es fiel y justo,
nos los perdonará
y nos limpiará de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados al Señor.
Santo Dios, Padre misericordioso,
    Por naturaleza soy pecador,
        y he pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra.
    No te he amado con todo mi corazón;
    No he amado a otros como debo.
        Merezco tu castigo tanto ahora como por la eternidad.
    Pero Jesús, mi Salvador, ha pagado por mis pecados
        con su sufrimiento inocente y muerte en la cruz.
    Confiando en él, oro: Dios, ten misericordia de mi, un pecador.

Oremos.

Dios Todopoderoso, entregaste a tu Hijo unigénito para que fuera la luz del mundo. Concédenos que tu pueblo, iluminado por tu Palabra y los sacramentos, brille con el resplandor de la gloria de Cristo, para que Él sea conocido, adorado y creído hasta los confines de la tierra; por Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, que contigo y con el Espíritu Santo vive y reina, un solo Dios, por los siglos de los siglos.

PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 49:1–6

Dios manifestaría su esplendor a través del sufrimiento del Siervo del Señor.

49 Escúchenme, costas lejanas,

oigan esto, naciones distantes:

El SEÑOR me llamó antes de que yo naciera,

en el vientre de mi madre pronunció mi nombre.

2 Hizo de mi boca una espada afilada,

y me escondió en la sombra de su mano;

me convirtió en una flecha pulida,

y me escondió en su aljaba.

3 Me dijo: «Israel, tú eres mi siervo;

en ti seré glorificado.»

4 Y respondí: «En vano he trabajado;

he gastado mis fuerzas sin provecho alguno.

Pero mi justicia está en manos del SEÑOR;

mi recompensa está con mi Dios.»

5 Y ahora dice el SEÑOR,

que desde el seno materno me formó

para que fuera yo su siervo,

para hacer que Jacob se vuelva a él,

que Israel se reúna a su alrededor;

porque a los ojos del SEÑOR soy digno de honra,

EL SALMO DEL DÍA Psalm 40

1 Puse en el SEÑOR toda mi esperanza; él se inclinó hacia mí y escuchó mi clamor.

2 Me sacó de la fosa de la muerte,

del lodo y del pantano; puso mis pies sobre una roca,

y me plantó en terreno firme.

3 Puso en mis labios un cántico nuevo,

un himno de alabanza a nuestro Dios.

Al ver esto, muchos tuvieron miedo

y pusieron su confianza en el SEÑOR.

4 Dichoso el que pone su confianza en el SEÑOR

y no recurre a los idólatras ni a los que adoran dioses falsos.

5 Muchas son, SEÑOR mi Dios,

las maravillas que tú has hecho.

No es posible enumerar tus bondades en favor nuestro.

Si quisiera anunciarlas y proclamarlas,

serían más de lo que puedo contar.

6 A ti no te complacen sacrificios ni ofrendas,

pero has abierto mis oídos para oírte;

tú no has pedido holocaustos ni sacrificios por el pecado.

7 Por eso dije: «Aquí me tienes

—como el libro dice de mí—.

8 Me agrada, Dios mío, hacer tu voluntad;

tu ley la llevo dentro de mí.»

9 En medio de la gran asamblea

he dado a conocer tu justicia.

Tú bien sabes, SEÑOR, que no he sellado mis labios.

10 No escondo tu justicia en mi corazón,

sino que proclamo tu fidelidad y tu salvación.

No oculto en la gran asamblea tu gran amor y tu verdad.

11 No me niegues, SEÑOR, tu misericordia;

que siempre me protejan tu amor y tu verdad.

12 Muchos males me han rodeado;

tantos son que no puedo contarlos.

Me han alcanzado mis iniquidades, y ya ni puedo ver.

Son más que los cabellos de mi cabeza,

y mi corazón desfallece.

13 Por favor, SEÑOR, ¡ven a librarme!

14 Sean confundidos y avergonzados

SEGUNDA LECTURA Colosenses 2:6–15

El Cordero de Dios era de carne y hueso para poder ser sacrificado y obtener el perdón de todos nuestros pecados.

6 Por eso, de la manera que recibieron a Cristo Jesús como Señor, vivan ahora en él, 7 arraigados y edificados en él, confirmados en la fe como se les enseñó, y llenos de gratitud.

8 Cuídense de que nadie los cautive con la vana y engañosa filosofía que sigue tradiciones humanas, la que está de acuerdo con los principios de este mundo y no conforme a Cristo.

9 Toda la plenitud de la divinidad habita en forma corporal en Cristo; 10 y en él, que es la cabeza de todo poder y autoridad, ustedes han recibido esa plenitud. 11 Además, en él fueron circuncidados, no por mano humana sino con la circuncisión que consiste en despojarse del cuerpo pecaminoso. Esta circuncisión la efectuó Cristo. 12 Ustedes la recibieron al ser sepultados con él en el bautismo. En él también fueron resucitados mediante la fe en el poder de Dios, quien lo resucitó de entre los muertos.

13 Antes de recibir esa circuncisión, ustedes estaban muertos en sus pecados. Sin embargo, Dios nos dio vida en unión con Cristo, al perdonarnos todos los pecados 14 y anular la deuda que teníamos pendiente por los requisitos de la ley. Él anuló esa deuda que nos era adversa, clavándola en la cruz. 15 Desarmó a los poderes y a las potestades, y por medio de Cristo los humilló en público al exhibirlos en su desfile triunfal.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO (en inglés y karen) Juan 1:29–41

Como el último y más grande de los profetas, Juan resume maravillosamente el plan de salvación de Dios señalando a Jesús y llamándolo el Cordero de Dios.

29 Al día siguiente Juan vio a Jesús que se acercaba a él, y dijo: «¡Aquí tienen al Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo! 30 De éste hablaba yo cuando dije: “Después de mí viene un hombre que es superior a mí, porque existía antes que yo.” 31 Yo ni siquiera lo conocía, pero, para que él se revelara al pueblo de Israel, vine bautizando con agua.»

32 Juan declaró: «Vi al Espíritu descender del cielo como una paloma y permanecer sobre él. 33 Yo mismo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua me dijo: “Aquel sobre quien veas que el Espíritu desciende y permanece es el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo.” 34 Yo lo he visto y por eso testifico que éste es el Hijo de Dios.»

35 Al día siguiente Juan estaba de nuevo allí, con dos de sus discípulos. 36 Al ver a Jesús que pasaba por ahí, dijo: —¡Aquí tienen al Cordero de Dios!

37 Cuando los dos discípulos le oyeron decir esto, siguieron a Jesús. 38 Jesús se volvió y, al ver que lo seguían, les preguntó: —¿Qué buscan?

—Rabí, ¿dónde te hospedas? (Rabí significa: Maestro.)

39 —Vengan a ver—les contestó Jesús.

Ellos fueron, pues, y vieron dónde se hospedaba, y aquel mismo día se quedaron con él. Eran como las cuatro de la tarde.

40 Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro, era uno de los dos que, al oír a Juan, habían seguido a Jesús. 41 Andrés encontró primero a su hermano Simón, y le dijo: —Hemos encontrado al Mesías (es decir, el Cristo).

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

SERMÓN

De pie por favor

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Y creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida, que procede del Padre y del Hijo, que con el Padre y el Hijo recibe una misma adoración y gloria, que habló por los profetas. Y creo en una sola iglesia, santa, apostólica, y universal. Reconozco un solo bautismo para el perdón de los pecados, y espero la resurrección de los muertos y la vida del mundo que ha de venir. ORACIÓN DE LA IGLESIA

Dios misericordioso, Padre bondadoso, nos has dado a tu único Hijo para que sea nuestro Salvador y en él nos has mostrado la gloria de tu amor. Afiánzanos y edifícanos en él. Fortalécenos en la fe y muévenos a reflejar tu amor con acción de gracias.
