THE SERVICE

FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT— EXACTLY WHAT I NEED: LIFE

I recognize the danger of death. I am tempted to wonder whether my life was worth it if I do not leave a legacy or live on in the memories of my loved ones after I die. When my soul separates from my body, will I also be eternally separated from God in hell? Jesus promises much better. He promises life. One day I will be reunited with my believing loved ones, both soul and body. I will live with Jesus forever in eternity. Jesus raised people from the dead to prove his power over death. That’s exactly the power I need.

FIRST READING 2 Kings 4:17–37

God enables the prophet Elisha to prove to a grieving mother that God can and will raise people from the dead.

17But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.

18The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. 19He said to his father, “My head! My head!”

His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.

22She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.” 23“Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.” “That’s all right,” she said.

24She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’ ” “Everything is all right,” she said.

27When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”

28“Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”

29Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”

30But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.

31Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”

32When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. 33He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

36Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.” 37She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.

12Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

14For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”

40Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. INTRODUCCIÓN A LA ADORACIÓN

Ofrecemos un servicio en inglés con traducciones en español y karen para toda la familia en las comunidades de Walker’s Square y Walker's Point. En nuestro servicio nos reunimos delante de nuestro Dios todopoderoso para ofrecerle nuestra adoración y alabanza. También nos congregamos para escuchar la santa y poderosa Palabra de Dios y para celebrar sus sacramentos que dan la vida. Por estos medios, Dios fortalece nuestra fe y nos trae siempre más cerca a nuestro hogar eterno. Se invita a la congregación a cantar y hablar las partes del servicio impresas en negrita.

INFORMACIÓN Y NOTAS DEL SERVICIO

Baños—Hay un baño ubicado por la entrada de la iglesia. Los baños adicionales también se encuentran abajo.

Niños en el servicio—Animamos a todos nuestros niños a quedarse y participar con nosotros en el servicio. Sin embargo, si necesita un espacio tranquilo para su hijo, tenemos una habitación privada disponible por la entrada de la iglesia.

La ofrenda—Si nos acompañas como visitante hoy, por favor no te sientas obligado(a) a participar.

QUINTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA—EXACTAMENTE LO QUE NECESITO: VIDA

Reconozco el peligro de la muerte. Me siento tentado a preguntarme si mi vida habrá valido la pena si no dejo un legado o si no perduro en los recuerdos de mis seres queridos después de morir. Cuando mi alma se separe de mi cuerpo, ¿estaré también eternamente separado de Dios en el infierno? Jesús promete algo mucho mejor. Él promete vida. Un día me reuniré con mis seres queridos creyentes, tanto en alma como en cuerpo. Viviré con Jesús para siempre en la eternidad. Jesús resucitó a personas de entre los muertos para demostrar su poder sobre la muerte. Ese es exactamente el poder que yo necesito.

Dios y Padre eterno, ayúdanos a recordar a Jesús, quien obedeció tu voluntad y cargó con la cruz para nuestra salvación, para que, por medio de su angustia, dolor y muerte, recibamos el perdón de los pecados, la victoria sobre la tumba y, finalmente, heredemos la vida eterna; por tu Hijo, Jesucristo nuestro Señor, quien vive y reina contigo y con el Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios, ahora y siempre.

PRIMERA LECTURA 2 Kings 4:17–37

Dios capacita al profeta Eliseo para demostrar a una madre afligida que Dios puede —y resucitará— a las personas de entre los muertos.

17 En efecto, la mujer quedó embarazada. Y al año siguiente, por esa misma fecha, dio a luz un hijo, tal como Eliseo se lo había dicho.

18 El niño creció, y un día salió a ver a su padre, que estaba con los segadores. 19 De pronto exclamó: —¡Ay, mi cabeza! ¡Me duele la cabeza!

El padre le ordenó a un criado: —¡Llévaselo a su madre! 20 El criado lo cargó y se lo llevó a la madre, la cual lo tuvo en sus rodillas hasta el mediodía. A esa hora, el niño murió. 21 Entonces ella subió, lo puso en la cama del hombre de Dios y, cerrando la puerta, salió.

22 Después llamó a su esposo y le dijo: —Préstame un criado y una burra; en seguida vuelvo. Voy de prisa a ver al hombre de Dios. 23 —¿Para qué vas a verlo hoy?—le preguntó su esposo—. No es día de luna nueva ni sábado. —No importa—respondió ella.

24 Entonces hizo aparejar la burra y le ordenó al criado: —¡Anda, vamos! No te detengas hasta que te lo diga. 25 La mujer se puso en marcha y llegó al monte Carmelo, donde estaba Eliseo, el hombre de Dios. Éste la vio a lo lejos y le dijo a su criado Guiezi: —¡Mira! Ahí viene la sunamita. 26 Corre a recibirla y pregúntale cómo está ella, y cómo están su esposo y el niño. El criado fue, y ella respondió que todos estaban bien.

27 Pero luego fue a la montaña y se abrazó a los pies del hombre de Dios. Guiezi se acercó con el propósito de apartarla, pero el hombre de Dios intervino: —¡Déjala! Está muy angustiada, y el SEÑOR me ha ocultado lo que pasa; no me ha dicho nada.

28 —Señor mío—le reclamó la mujer—, ¿acaso yo le pedí a usted un hijo? ¿No le rogué que no me engañara?

29 Eliseo le ordenó a Guiezi: —Arréglate la ropa, toma mi bastón y ponte en camino. Si te encuentras con alguien, ni lo saludes; si alguien te saluda, no le respondas. Y cuando llegues, coloca el bastón sobre la cara del niño.

30 Pero la madre del niño exclamó: —¡Le juro a usted que no lo dejaré solo! ¡Tan cierto como que el SEÑOR y usted viven! Así que Eliseo se levantó y fue con ella.

31 Guiezi, que se había adelantado, llegó y colocó el bastón sobre la cara del niño, pero éste no respondió ni dio ninguna señal de vida. Por tanto, Guiezi volvió para encontrarse con Eliseo y le dijo: —El niño no despierta.

32 Cuando Eliseo llegó a la casa, encontró al niño muerto, tendido sobre su cama. 33 Entró al cuarto, cerró la puerta y oró al SEÑOR. 34 Luego subió a la cama y se tendió sobre el niño boca a boca, ojos a ojos y manos a manos, hasta que el cuerpo del niño empezó a entrar en calor. 35 Eliseo se levantó y se puso a caminar de un lado a otro del cuarto, y luego volvió a tenderse sobre el niño. Esto lo hizo siete veces, al cabo de las cuales el niño estornudó y abrió los ojos.

36 Entonces Eliseo le dijo a Guiezi: —Llama a la señora. Guiezi así lo hizo, y cuando la mujer llegó, Eliseo le dijo: —Puedes llevarte a tu hijo. 37 Ella entró, se arrojó a los pies de Eliseo y se postró rostro en tierra. Entonces tomó a su hijo y salió.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SALMO DEL DÍA Salmo 130

   1 A ti, SEÑOR, elevo mi clamor
      desde las profundidades del abismo.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 8:11–19

El Padre promete resucitarme de entre los muertos y hacerme heredero de la gloria eterna.

11 Y si el Espíritu de aquel que levantó a Jesús de entre los muertos vive en ustedes, el mismo que levantó a Cristo de entre los muertos también dará vida a sus cuerpos mortales por medio de su Espíritu, que vive en ustedes.

12 Por tanto, hermanos, tenemos una obligación, pero no es la de vivir conforme a la naturaleza pecaminosa. 13 Porque si ustedes viven conforme a ella, morirán; pero si por medio del Espíritu dan muerte a los malos hábitos del cuerpo, vivirán. 1

4 Porque todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios son hijos de Dios. 15 Y ustedes no recibieron un espíritu que de nuevo los esclavice al miedo, sino el Espíritu que los adopta como hijos y les permite clamar: «¡Abba! ¡Padre!» 16 El Espíritu mismo le asegura a nuestro espíritu que somos hijos de Dios. 17 Y si somos hijos, somos herederos; herederos de Dios y coherederos con Cristo, pues si ahora sufrimos con él, también tendremos parte con él en su gloria.

18 De hecho, considero que en nada se comparan los sufrimientos actuales con la gloria que habrá de revelarse en nosotros. 19 La creación aguarda con ansiedad la revelación de los hijos de Dios,

Un cadáver responde al mandato vivificador de Cristo, demostrando que Jesús es el Señor de la vida.

17 A su llegada, Jesús se encontró con que Lázaro llevaba ya cuatro días en el sepulcro. 18 Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a tres kilómetros de distancia, 19 y muchos judíos habían ido a casa de Marta y de María, a darles el pésame por la muerte de su hermano. 20 Cuando Marta supo que Jesús llegaba, fue a su encuentro; pero María se quedó en la casa.

21 —Señor—le dijo Marta a Jesús—, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. 22 Pero yo sé que aun ahora Dios te dará todo lo que le pidas.

23 —Tu hermano resucitará—le dijo Jesús.

24 —Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el día final—respondió Marta.

25 Entonces Jesús le dijo: —Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. El que cree en mí vivirá, aunque muera; 26 y todo el que vive y cree en mí no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto?

27 —Sí, Señor; yo creo que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que había de venir al mundo.

38 Conmovido una vez más, Jesús se acercó al sepulcro. Era una cueva cuya entrada estaba tapada con una piedra. 39 —Quiten la piedra—ordenó Jesús.

Marta, la hermana del difunto, objetó: —Señor, ya debe oler mal, pues lleva cuatro días allí.

40 —¿No te dije que si crees verás la gloria de Dios?—le contestó Jesús.

41 Entonces quitaron la piedra. Jesús, alzando la vista, dijo: —Padre, te doy gracias porque me has escuchado. 42 Ya sabía yo que siempre me escuchas, pero lo dije por la gente que está aquí presente, para que crean que tú me enviaste.

43 Dicho esto, gritó con todas sus fuerzas: —¡Lázaro, sal fuera!

44 El muerto salió, con vendas en las manos y en los pies, y el rostro cubierto con un sudario.

—Quítenle las vendas y dejen que se vaya—les dijo Jesús.

45 Muchos de los judíos que habían ido a ver a María y que habían presenciado lo hecho por Jesús, creyeron en él.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

1 Oh Dios, oh Señor del cielo y de la tierra,

De pie por favor

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.
