THE SERVICE

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—HE LIVES TO GIVE ME EAGER EXPECTATION OF GLORY

Without the resurrection of Jesus, my uncertainty can easily lead to anxiety. I am waiting for everything to turn out, and not knowing what will happen is much harder if I think I cannot rely on anyone. It’s been a long time since Jesus ascended into heaven. Sometimes I suffer. Has he forgotten about me?

He lives, and it makes a difference. I know how my life will turn out, and that certainty about the future helps with life’s present difficulties. While I wait in the time between Christ’s ascension and his return on judgment day, I know that God will work everything out for my good.

FIRST READING Acts 1:12–26

Matthias is chosen to join the apostles whose testimony about Christ’s resurrection gives the Church the expectation of future glory.

12Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.”

18(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“ ‘May his place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in it,’

and,

“ ‘May another take his place of leadership.’

21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

The God of all grace has called us to future glory. Until that time, he encourages us to bring all our anxiety to him.

12Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

8Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Lord God, you are worthy to receive thanks and praise from all people. You created the world and all who live in it, and in your mercy you saved us. We give thanks to you for the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Though in very nature God, he took the nature of a servant and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. He offered himself as a sacrifice for sin and redeemed us from its curse and penalty. He rescued us from the terrors of death and restored eternal life with you. He conquered our enemies and gained for us the kingdom of grace and glory.

Bless us as we receive your Son’s body and blood, and lead us to remember his suffering, death, and resurrection. Forgive our sins and fill us with the hope of new life in heaven. Hear our praise and receive our thanks as we worship you—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

INTRODUCCIÓN A LA ADORACIÓN

Ofrecemos un servicio en inglés con traducciones en español y karen para toda la familia en las comunidades de Walker’s Square y Walker's Point. En nuestro servicio nos reunimos delante de nuestro Dios todopoderoso para ofrecerle nuestra adoración y alabanza. También nos congregamos para escuchar la santa y poderosa Palabra de Dios y para celebrar sus sacramentos que dan la vida. Por estos medios, Dios fortalece nuestra fe y nos trae siempre más cerca a nuestro hogar eterno. Se invita a la congregación a cantar y hablar las partes del servicio impresas en negrita.

INFORMACIÓN Y NOTAS DEL SERVICIO

Baños—Hay un baño ubicado por la entrada de la iglesia. Los baños adicionales también se encuentran abajo.

Niños en el servicio—Animamos a todos nuestros niños a quedarse y participar con nosotros en el servicio. Sin embargo, si necesita un espacio tranquilo para su hijo, tenemos una habitación privada disponible por la entrada de la iglesia.

SÉPTIMO DOMINGO DE PASCUA—ÉL VIVE PARA DARME UNA EXPECTATIVA ANHELANTE DE GLORIA

Sin la resurrección de Jesús, mi incertidumbre puede derivar fácilmente en ansiedad. Espero a que todo se resuelva, y no saber qué sucederá resulta mucho más difícil si pienso que no puedo confiar en nadie. Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que Jesús ascendió al cielo. A veces sufro. ¿Se habrá olvidado de mí?

Él vive, y eso marca la diferencia. Sé cómo terminará mi vida, y esa certeza sobre el futuro me ayuda a afrontar las dificultades presentes de la vida. Mientras espero en el tiempo que transcurre entre la ascensión de Cristo y su regreso en el día del juicio, sé que Dios hará que todo obre para mi bien.

Matías es elegido para unirse a los apóstoles, cuyo testimonio sobre la resurrección de Cristo otorga a la Iglesia la expectativa de la gloria futura.

12 Entonces regresaron a Jerusalén desde el monte llamado de los Olivos, situado aproximadamente a un kilómetro de la ciudad. 13 Cuando llegaron, subieron al lugar donde se alojaban. Estaban allí Pedro, Juan, Jacobo, Andrés, Felipe, Tomás, Bartolomé, Mateo, Jacobo hijo de Alfeo, Simón el Zelote y Judas hijo de Jacobo. 14 Todos, en un mismo espíritu, se dedicaban a la oración, junto con las mujeres y con los hermanos de Jesús y su madre María.

12 Queridos hermanos, no se extrañen del fuego de la prueba que están soportando, como si fuera algo insólito. 13 Al contrario, alégrense de tener parte en los sufrimientos de Cristo, para que también sea inmensa su alegría cuando se revele la gloria de Cristo. 14 Dichosos ustedes si los insultan por causa del nombre de Cristo, porque el glorioso Espíritu de Dios reposa sobre ustedes. 15 Que ninguno tenga que sufrir por asesino, ladrón o delincuente, ni siquiera por entrometido. 16 Pero si alguien sufre por ser cristiano, que no se avergüence, sino que alabe a Dios por llevar el nombre de Cristo. 17 Porque es tiempo de que el juicio comience por la familia de Dios; y si comienza por nosotros, ¡cuál no será el fin de los que se rebelan contra el evangelio de Dios!

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.
