THE SERVICE

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—HE LIVES TO BE THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to wonder if he wasn’t just a human being. If my last view of him is a criminal crucified on a cross, he would look like someone to be rejected. He couldn’t even help himself, much less anyone else!

But he lives, and it makes a difference. He is the only way to heaven. This gospel message is the most inclusive message in the world. The benefits of the resurrection of Jesus are meant for every man, woman, and child who has ever lived.

SECOND READING 1 Peter 2:4–10

People stumble over the claim that Jesus is the only way to heaven. But that truth is the cornerstone on which Christ builds his Church.

4As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”

7Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”

8and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Jesus teaches that the only way to draw near to God the Father is through God the Son.

16Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

17At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. QUINTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA—ÉL VIVE PARA SER EL ÚNICO CAMINO AL CIELO

Sin la resurrección de Jesús, tendría que preguntarme si acaso no fue simplemente un ser humano. Si mi última imagen de él fuera la de un criminal crucificado en una cruz, parecería alguien digno de ser rechazado. ¡Ni siquiera pudo ayudarse a sí mismo, y mucho menos a cualquier otra persona!

Pero él vive, y eso marca la diferencia. Él es el único camino al cielo. Este mensaje del Evangelio es el mensaje más inclusivo del mundo. Los beneficios de la resurrección de Jesús están destinados a cada hombre, mujer y niño que haya vivido jamás.

PRIMERA LECTURA Hechos 4:8–12

San Pedro explica que Jesús es la única persona en quien se encuentra la salvación.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 Pedro2:4–10

La gente tropieza con la afirmación de que Jesús es el único camino al cielo. Pero esa verdad es la piedra angular sobre la cual Cristo edifica su Iglesia.

4 Cristo es la piedra viva, rechazada por los seres humanos pero escogida y preciosa ante Dios. Al acercarse a él, 5 también ustedes son como piedras vivas, con las cuales se está edificando una casa espiritual. De este modo llegan a ser un sacerdocio santo, para ofrecer sacrificios espirituales que Dios acepta por medio de Jesucristo. 6 Así dice la Escritura:

«Miren que pongo en Sión

una piedra principal escogida y preciosa,

y el que confíe en ella

no será jamás defraudado.»

7 Para ustedes los creyentes, esta piedra es preciosa; pero para los incrédulos,

«la piedra que desecharon los constructores

ha llegado a ser la piedra angular»,

8 y también:

«una piedra de tropiezo

y una roca que hace caer.»

Tropiezan al desobedecer la palabra, para lo cual estaban destinados.

9 Pero ustedes son linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, nación santa, pueblo que pertenece a Dios, para que proclamen las obras maravillosas de aquel que los llamó de las tinieblas a su luz admirable. 10 Ustedes antes ni siquiera eran pueblo, pero ahora son pueblo de Dios; antes no habían recibido misericordia, pero ahora ya la han recibido.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

Jesús enseña que la única manera de acercarse a Dios Padre es a través de Dios Hijo.

Voy a prepararles un lugar. 3 Y si me voy y se lo preparo, vendré para llevármelos conmigo. Así ustedes estarán donde yo esté. 4 Ustedes ya conocen el camino para ir adonde yo voy.

5 Dijo entonces Tomás: —Señor, no sabemos a dónde vas, así que ¿cómo podemos conocer el camino?

6 —Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida—le contestó Jesús—. Nadie llega al Padre sino por mí. 7 Si ustedes realmente me conocieran, conocerían también a mi Padre. Y ya desde este momento lo conocen y lo han visto.

8 —Señor—dijo Felipe—, muéstranos al Padre y con eso nos basta.

9 —¡Pero, Felipe! ¿Tanto tiempo llevo ya entre ustedes, y todavía no me conoces? El que me ha visto a mí, ha visto al Padre. ¿Cómo puedes decirme: “Muéstranos al Padre”? 10 ¿Acaso no crees que yo estoy en el Padre, y que el Padre está en mí? Las palabras que yo les comunico, no las hablo como cosa mía, sino que es el Padre, que está en mí, el que realiza sus obras. 11 Créanme cuando les digo que yo estoy en el Padre y que el Padre está en mí; o al menos créanme por las obras mismas.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

16 »Dentro de poco ya no me verán; pero un poco después volverán a verme.

17 Algunos de sus discípulos comentaban entre sí: «¿Qué quiere decir con eso de que “dentro de poco ya no me verán”, y un poco después volverán a verme”, y “porque voy al Padre”?» 18 E insistían: «¿Qué quiere decir con eso de “dentro de poco”? No sabemos de qué habla.»

19 Jesús se dio cuenta de que querían hacerle preguntas acerca de esto, así que les dijo: —¿Se están preguntando qué quise decir cuando dije: “Dentro de poco ya no me verán”, y un poco después volverán a verme”? 20 Ciertamente les aseguro que ustedes llorarán de dolor, mientras que el mundo se alegrará. Se pondrán tristes, pero su tristeza se convertirá en alegría. 21 La mujer que está por dar a luz siente dolores porque ha llegado su momento, pero en cuanto nace la criatura se olvida de su angustia por la alegría de haber traído al mundo un nuevo ser. 22 Lo mismo les pasa a ustedes: Ahora están tristes, pero cuando vuelva a verlos se alegrarán, y nadie les va a quitar esa alegría. 23 En aquel día ya no me preguntarán nada.
