THE SERVICE
PENTECOST 19 – THE BEGINNING OF THE END – IT’S TIME TO SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER
Sometimes people get braver when they realize they are nearing the end. They speak things they couldn’t or wouldn’t say before, even to the powerful, because they realize they have nothing to lose.
The message of repentance and forgiveness of sins through Jesus’ death on the cross has many powerful enemies. Sometimes those enemies are religious people, rebellious spirits and heretics. Sometimes those enemies are people of this world who worship their own personal desires and glory in their shame.
It doesn’t matter how powerful the enemies are. God persists in speaking his truth and drawing our eyes to his Son, who will help us persevere to the end and speak truth to power.
OPENING HYMN 870 O Church, Arise
1 O Church, arise and put your armor on;
hear the call of Christ our captain.
For now the weak can say that they are strong
in the strength that God has given.
With shield of faith and belt of truth
we’ll stand against the devil’s lies;
an army bold whose battle cry is love,
reaching out to those in darkness.
2 Our call to war—to love the captive soul,
but to rage against the captor;
and with the sword that makes the wounded whole
we will fight with faith and valor.
When faced with trials on ev’ry side,
we know the outcome is secure,
and Christ will have the prize for which he died—
an inheritance of nations.
3 Come see the cross, where love and mercy meet,
as the Son of God is stricken;
then see his foes lie crushed beneath his feet,
for the Conqueror has risen!
And as the stone is rolled away,
and Christ emerges from the grave,
this vict’ry march continues till the day
ev’ry eye and heart shall see him.
4 So Spirit come, put strength in ev’ry stride,
give grace for ev’ry hurdle,
that we may run with faith to win the prize
of a servant good and faithful.
As saints of old still line the way,
retelling triumphs of his grace,
we hear their calls and hunger for the day
when with Christ we stand in glory.

INVOCATION 154 Setting One
In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father,
I am sinful by nature
and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions.
I have not loved you with my whole heart;
I have not loved others as I should.
I deserve your punishment both now and forever.
But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins
with his innocent suffering and death.
Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Silence for meditation and reflection
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
KYRIE 156 Lord, Have Mercy
In peace let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
Amen.
SONG OF PRAISE 605 From All That Dwell below the Skies
1 From all that dwell below the skies
let the Creator’s praise arise.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Let the Redeemer’s name be sung
through ev’ry land, by ev’ry tongue.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
2 Eternal are your mercies, Lord;
eternal truth attends your Word.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Your praise shall sound from shore to shore
till suns shall rise and set no more.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.
Almighty God, in your bountiful goodness, keep us safe from every evil of body and soul. Make us ready, with cheerful hearts, to do whatever pleases you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READING Isaiah 5:1–7
The Lord pictures his patient love in a story about the owner of a vineyard.
1I will sing for the one I love
a song about his vineyard:
My loved one had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside.
2He dug it up and cleared it of stones
and planted it with the choicest vines.
He built a watchtower in it
and cut out a winepress as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
but it yielded only bad fruit.
3“Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
4What more could have been done for my vineyard
than I have done for it?
When I looked for good grapes,
why did it yield only bad?
5Now I will tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its hedge,
and it will be destroyed;
I will break down its wall,
and it will be trampled.
6I will make it a wasteland,
neither pruned nor cultivated,
and briers and thorns will grow there.
I will command the clouds
not to rain on it.”
7The vineyard of the Lord Almighty
is the nation of Israel,
and the people of Judah
are the vines he delighted in.
And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed;
for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 80
1Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,
shine forth 2before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.
Awaken your might;
come and save us.
3Restore us, O God;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
4How long, Lord God Almighty,
will your anger smolder
against the prayers of your people?
5You have fed them with the bread of tears;
you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.
6You have made us an object of derision to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock us.
7Restore us, God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
8You transplanted a vine from Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
9You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11Its branches reached as far as the Sea,
its shoots as far as the River.
12Why have you broken down its walls
so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
13Boars from the forest ravage it,
and insects from the fields feed on it.
14Return to us, God Almighty!
Look down from heaven and see!
Watch over this vine,
15the root your right hand has planted,
the son you have raised up for yourself.
16Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;
at your rebuke your people perish.
17Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
the son of man you have raised up for yourself.
18Then we will not turn away from you;
revive us, and we will call on your name.
19Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
SECOND READING Philippians 3:12–21
God prompts us to respond to his grace by living differently from the enemies of the cross of Christ.
12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
15All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16Only let us live up to what we have already attained.
17Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
VERSE OF THE DAY Ephesians 2:10

GOSPEL (in English and Karen) Matthew 21:33–43
Jesus tells the parable of the tenants to call leaders to repentance.
33“Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 34When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. 35“The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. 36Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.
37Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. 38“But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ 39So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40“Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41“He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”
42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“ ‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43“Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ!

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Hear us, Shepherd of Israel. Awaken your might.
Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us and save us.
You lead your people like a flock. Gather those who have gone astray. Reach the lost with your saving gospel and bring them in. Expand your kingdom that new people may enter and bear fruit to your glory.
Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us and save us.
Govern, guide and bless all who work in the vineyard of your kingdom. Strengthen them, that they live up to the grace they have already received. Bless them in all they do for you. Restrain the enemies of the cross of Christ.
Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us and save us.
Guide and bless those who translate and publish the Scriptures, that your Word may be heard in every nation and spoken by every tongue, so that your people everywhere may grow in knowledge and faith.
Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us and save us.
Watch over your people who weep, struggle and suffer, [especially…]. Restore them, that they may praise your name.
Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us and save us.
Special prayers and intercessions may follow.
Listen, Lord, to the thoughts and cares of our hearts.
Silent prayer.
God Almighty, we thank you for calling us to faith and to service with your holy gospel. Grant that we may faithfully follow your Word, believe in our Lord Christ, serve him in holiness and righteousness, and hold fast to your precious promises in him; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE SACRAMENT
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock until he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:
SANCTUS
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts:
heav’n and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
Amen.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
We give thanks to you, O God, through your dear Son, Jesus Christ, whom you sent to be our Savior, our Redeemer, and the messenger of your grace. Through him you made all things; in him you are well pleased. He is the incarnate Word, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. To fulfill your promises, he stretched out his hands on the cross and released from eternal death all who believe in you.
As we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection, we thank you that you have gathered us together to receive your Son’s body and blood. Send us your Spirit, unite us as one, and strengthen our faith so that we may praise you in your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, we glorify and honor you, O God our Father, with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my T body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my T blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
Amen.
AGNUS DEI
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;

DISTRIBUTION HYMN 889 Jerusalem the Golden
1 Jerusalem the golden,
with milk and honey blest—
the sight of it refreshes
the weary and oppressed.
I know not, oh, I know not
what joys await us there,
what radiancy of glory,
what bliss beyond compare:
to sing the hymn unending
with all the martyr throng,
amidst the halls of Zion
resounding full with song.
2 O sweet and blessèd country,
the home of God’s elect!
O sweet and blessèd country
that eager hearts expect,
where they who with their leader
have conquered in the fight
forever and forever
are clad in robes of white:
in mercy, Jesus, bring us
to that dear land of rest
where sings the host of heaven
your glorious name to bless.
3 The Christ is ever with them,
the daylight is serene;
the pastures of the blessèd
are ever rich and green.
There is the throne of David,
and there, from care released,
the shout of them that triumph,
the song of them that feast.
To God enthroned in glory
the Church’s voices blend,
the Lamb forever blessèd,
the Light that knows no end.

DISTRIBUTION HYMN 728 This Is My Will
1 This is my will, my one command,
that love should dwell among you all.
This is my will, that you should love
as I have shown that I love you.
2 No greater love can be than this:
To choose to die to save one’s friends.
You are my friends if you obey
what I command that you should do.
3 I call you now no longer slaves;
no slave knows all his master does.
I call you friends, for all I hear
my Father say you hear from me.
4 You chose not me, but I chose you,
that you should go and bear much fruit.
I chose you out that you in me
should bear much fruit that will abide.
5 All that you ask my Father dear
for my name’s sake you shall receive.
This is my will, my one command,
that love should dwell in each, in all.

CLOSING HYMN 853 I’m But a Stranger Here
1 I’m but a stranger here,
heav’n is my home;
earth is a desert drear,
heav’n is my home;
danger and sorrow stand
round me on ev’ry hand;
heav’n is my fatherland,
heav’n is my home.
2 What though the tempest rage,
heav’n is my home;
short is my pilgrimage,
heav’n is my home;
and time’s wild, wintry blast
soon shall be overpast;
I shall reach home at last,
heav’n is my home.
3 Therefore I murmur not,
heav’n is my home;
whate’er my earthly lot,
heav’n is my home;
and I shall surely stand
there at my Lord’s right hand;
heav’n is my fatherland,
heav’n is my home.

cíñete de Su-armadura;
Oye la voz de Cristo,-el Capitán;
de Su fuerza-el débil tomará.
Con el escudo de la fe,
al diablo no-hemos de temer.
Ejército, armado de amor,
ve y-alcanza-a los perdidos.
2 Nuestra misión será servir y-amar,
combatiendo-al enemigo.
La-espada de Su-Espíritu traerá
libertad a los cautivos.
Aunque-haya pruebas por doquier,
segura es Su salvación;
Jesús tendrá lo que ganó-al morir:
una-herencia de naciones.
3 Mira-en la cruz la gracia-y el perdón,
donde-el Hijo fue-inmolado;
Mas aplastados yacen a los pies
del Señor Sus enemigos.
Conquistador, Se levantó,
es Cristo quien resucitó;
Se cantará Su triunfo hasta que
todo ojo pueda verlo.
4 Su-Espíritu nos llene de valor,
nos dé fuerza-a cada paso.
Nos dé la fe para-el premio-obtener
de un siervo fiel y bueno.
Los santos que lucharon ya
celebran Su fidelidad;
Dios les guardó y-así nos guardará
hasta-estar con Él en gloria.

Santo Dios, Padre misericordioso,
No te he amado con todo mi corazón;
KIRIE 156 Lord, Have Mercy (traducido)

Yo esperaba que diera buenas uvas;
¿por qué dio uvas agrias?
5 Voy a decirles
lo que haré con mi viña:
Le quitaré su cerco,
y será destruida;
derribaré su muro,
y será pisoteada.
6 La dejaré desolada,
y no será podada ni cultivada;
le crecerán espinos y cardos.
Mandaré que las nubes
no lluevan sobre ella.
7 La viña del SEÑOR Todopoderoso es el pueblo de Israel;
pero encontró ríos de sangre;
esperaba rectitud,
¡Muestra tu poder, y ven a salvarnos!
3 Restáuranos, oh Dios;
5 Por comida, le has dado pan de lágrimas;
por bebida, lágrimas en abundancia.
6 Nos has hecho motivo de contienda
para nuestros vecinos;
nuestros enemigos se burlan de nosotros.
7 Restáuranos, oh Dios Todopoderoso;
haz resplandecer tu rostro sobre nosotros,
y sálvanos.
8 De Egipto trajiste una vid;
14 ¡Vuélvete a nosotros, oh Dios Todopoderoso!
16 Tu vid está derribada, quemada por el fuego;
a tu reprensión perece tu pueblo.
18 Nosotros no nos apartaremos de ti;
reavívanos, e invocaremos tu nombre.
19 Restáuranos, SEÑOR, Dios Todopoderoso;
haz resplandecer tu rostro sobre nosotros,
y sálvanos.
SEGUNDA LECTURA Filipenses 3:12–21

ha llegado a ser la piedra angular;

SANCTUS
Santo, santo, santo, Dios del universo;

HIMNO DE LA DISTRIBUCIÓN 889 S Jerusalem the Golden (traducido)
1 Jerusalén la-excelsa,
Gloriámonos en ti,
Perpetuo, caro-ensueño
De tu fiel grey aquí,
La grey que ya tus glorias
A la distancia ve,
Y-al verlas, sus afanes
Redobla por la fe.
A cantar el himno-eterno,
con coro celestial,
en las salones de Zión
resonando con canción.
2 Mi dulce patria-amada,
Mi gozo tú serás.
Morada deseada,
Descanso me darás.
Donde ellos con su líder
han conquistado en la lucha
Por siempre y por siempre
vestidos en togas de justicia.
¡Oh tú!, que-ahora gimes
Y-en polvo siempre vas:
Las glorias más sublimes
Con Cristo gozarás.
3 Jesús es sol y lumbre:
Tribútale loor
La santa muchedumbre
Al Rey y Redentor.
Hay un trono de David
y de-allí la libertad,
Los gritos triunfantes,
con glorias alabad.
¡Qué gozo me-es, tranquila,
Eterna-habitación,
Saber que-en Ti termina
Mi peregrinación!

HIMNO 728 S This is My Will (traducido)
1 Mi voluntad, es que-el amor
entre todos habite.
Mi voluntad es que mi-amor
que te mostré, que les muestren.
2 No puede haber mayor amor que este:
Elegir morir para salvar a los amigos.
Ustedes son mis amigos si obedecen
lo que mando que hagáis.
3 Ya no os llamo más esclavos;
