SERVICIO DIVINO

SÉPTIMO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—LOS CRISTIANOS SON PLANTADOS POR LA PALABRA

Sembrar a mano puede ser algo extraordinario. En la mano, la semilla parece carecer de vida y ser insignificante. Uno la deposita en la tierra y, de repente, por sí sola, la semilla germina, brota y se alza hacia el sol. ¡Excepto cuando no es así! Al sembrar varias semillas, a menudo solo algunas llegan a crecer. La Biblia describe a los cristianos como personas plantadas por la Palabra. ¿Por qué algunos crecen en la fe y otros no? ¿Qué es lo que hace diferentes a los cristianos? La Biblia describe el proceso sobrenatural mediante el cual Dios llama a las personas a la fe a través del evangelio. Él promete que su Palabra siempre cumple su propósito; es poderosa por sí misma, sin necesidad de nuestra ayuda. A medida que crecemos en la fe, damos gracias a Dios por el milagro de su obra en nuestras vidas.

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Sembramos la semilla de la Palabra de Dios, pero solo Él puede hacerla crecer.

5 Después de todo, ¿qué es Apolos? ¿Y qué es Pablo? Nada más que servidores por medio de los cuales ustedes llegaron a creer, según lo que el Señor le asignó a cada uno. 6 Yo sembré, Apolos regó, pero Dios ha dado el crecimiento. 7 Así que no cuenta ni el que siembra ni el que riega, sino sólo Dios, quien es el que hace crecer. 8 El que siembra y el que riega están al mismo nivel, aunque cada uno será recompensado según su propio trabajo. 9 En efecto, nosotros somos colaboradores al servicio de Dios; y ustedes son el campo de cultivo de Dios, son el edificio de Dios.

10 Según la gracia que Dios me ha dado, yo, como maestro constructor, eché los cimientos, y otro construye sobre ellos. Pero cada uno tenga cuidado de cómo construye, 11 porque nadie puede poner un fundamento diferente del que ya está puesto, que es Jesucristo.

EVANGELIO Mateo 13:1–9,18–23

Jesús presenta el ministerio como un sembrador que esparce la semilla.

13 Ese mismo día salió Jesús de la casa y se sentó junto al lago. 2 Era tal la multitud que se reunió para verlo que él tuvo que subir a una barca donde se sentó mientras toda la gente estaba de pie en la orilla. 3 Y les dijo en parábolas muchas cosas como éstas: Un sembrador salió a sembrar. 4 Mientras iba esparciendo la semilla, una parte cayó junto al camino, y llegaron los pájaros y se la comieron. 5 Otra parte cayó en terreno pedregoso, sin mucha tierra. Esa semilla brotó pronto porque la tierra no era profunda; 6 pero cuando salió el sol, las plantas se marchitaron y, por no tener raíz, se secaron. 7 Otra parte de la semilla cayó entre espinos que, al crecer, la ahogaron. 8 Pero las otras semillas cayeron en buen terreno, en el que se dio una cosecha que rindió treinta, sesenta y hasta cien veces más de lo que se había sembrado. 9 El que tenga oídos, que oiga.»

18 »Escuchen lo que significa la parábola del sembrador: 19 Cuando alguien oye la palabra acerca del reino y no la entiende, viene el maligno y arrebata lo que se sembró en su corazón. Ésta es la semilla sembrada junto al camino. 20 El que recibió la semilla que cayó en terreno pedregoso es el que oye la palabra e inmediatamente la recibe con alegría; 21 pero como no tiene raíz, dura poco tiempo. Cuando surgen problemas o persecución a causa de la palabra, en seguida se aparta de ella. 22 El que recibió la semilla que cayó entre espinos es el que oye la palabra, pero las preocupaciones de esta vida y el engaño de las riquezas la ahogan, de modo que ésta no llega a dar fruto. 23 Pero el que recibió la semilla que cayó en buen terreno es el que oye la palabra y la entiende. Éste sí produce una cosecha al treinta, al sesenta y hasta al ciento por uno.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Small Groups & Bible Studies—At St. Peter, our goal is to build lives on Christ, the Rock. Because we want every member to have a setting where sincere questions can be asked, struggles shared, and encouragement trusted, we have 7+ regular Bible studies or small groups at St. Peter! INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—CHRISTIAN ARE PLANTED BY THE WORD

Planting seed by hand can be extraordinary. In your hand, the seed looks lifeless and insignificant. You put the seed into the soil, and suddenly, all by itself, the seed germinates and sprouts and reaches to the sun. Except when it doesn’t! Plant multiple seeds, and often only some will grow. The Bible describes Christians as planted by the Word. Why do some people grow in faith, and not others? What makes Christians different? The Bible describes the supernatural process by which God calls people to faith through the gospel. He promises that his Word always accomplishes his purpose. It is powerful all on its own, without our help. As we grow in faith, we give God thanks for the miracle of his work in our lives.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

We sow the seed of God’s Word, but only he can make it grow.

5What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Jesus pictures ministry as a planter scattering seed.

1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

18“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

This is the Gospel of God.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
