SERVICIO DIVINO

SEXTO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS —LOS CRISTIANOS VIVEN EN DOS REINOS

Este fin de semana se conmemora el 250.º aniversario de la firma de la Declaración de Independencia de los Estados Unidos de América. Ciudadanos estadounidenses de diversos orígenes lo celebran de muchas maneras. ¿Qué distingue a los ciudadanos cristianos? La ciudadanía cristiana no está vinculada a ningún partido político en particular ni a actividades cívicas específicas. Los cristianos comprenden que viven en dos reinos. Dios no necesita nuestras buenas obras, pero nuestro prójimo sí. La Palabra de Dios guía nuestra elección de actividades políticas al procurar ser fieles a nuestro llamado como ciudadanos cristianos.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Dios todopoderoso, en su gran misericordia ha entregado a su Hijo para morir por ti y por causa de Él perdona todos tus pecados. Como ministro llamado y ordenado por Cristo y por su autoridad, te perdono todos tus pecados en el nombre del Padre, y del T Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

PRIMERA LECTURA Daniel 1:3–21

Aprendemos de Daniel cómo vivir en dos reinos.

3 Además, el rey le ordenó a Aspenaz, jefe de los oficiales de su corte, que llevara a su presencia a algunos de los israelitas pertenecientes a la familia real y a la nobleza. 4 Debían ser jóvenes apuestos y sin ningún defecto físico, que tuvieran aptitudes para aprender de todo y que actuaran con sensatez; jóvenes sabios y aptos para el servicio en el palacio real, a los cuales Aspenaz debía enseñarles la lengua y la literatura de los babilonios. 5 El rey les asignó raciones diarias de la comida y del vino que se servía en la mesa real. Su preparación habría de durar tres años, después de lo cual entrarían al servicio del rey.

6 Entre estos jóvenes se encontraban Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías, que eran de Judá, 7 y a los cuales el jefe de oficiales les cambió el nombre: a Daniel lo llamó Beltsasar; a Ananías, Sadrac; a Misael, Mesac; y a Azarías, Abednego.

8 Pero Daniel se propuso no contaminarse con la comida y el vino del rey, así que le pidió al jefe de oficiales que no lo obligara a contaminarse. 9 Y aunque Dios había hecho que Daniel se ganara el afecto y la simpatía del jefe de oficiales, 10 éste se vio obligado a responderle a Daniel: «Tengo miedo de mi señor el rey, pues fue él quien te asignó la comida y el vino. Si el rey llega a verte más flaco y demacrado que los otros jóvenes de tu edad, por culpa tuya me cortará la cabeza.»

11 El jefe de oficiales le ordenó a un guardia atender a Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías. Por su parte, Daniel habló con ese guardia y le dijo: 12 «Por favor, haz con tus siervos una prueba de diez días. Danos de comer sólo verduras, y de beber sólo agua. 13 Pasado ese tiempo, compara nuestro semblante con el de los jóvenes que se alimentan con la comida real, y procede de acuerdo con lo que veas en nosotros.»

14 El guardia aceptó la propuesta, y los sometió a una prueba de diez días. 15 Al cumplirse el plazo, estos jóvenes se veían más sanos y mejor alimentados que cualquiera de los que participaban de la comida real. 16 Así que el guardia les retiró la comida y el vino del rey, y en su lugar siguió alimentándolos con verduras.

17 A estos cuatro jóvenes Dios los dotó de sabiduría e inteligencia para entender toda clase de literatura y ciencia. Además, Daniel podía entender toda visión y todo sueño.

18 Cumplido el plazo fijado por el rey Nabucodonosor, y conforme a sus instrucciones, el jefe de oficiales los llevó ante su presencia. 19 Luego de hablar el rey con Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías, no encontró a nadie que los igualara, de modo que los cuatro entraron a su servicio. 20 El rey los interrogó, y en todos los temas que requerían de sabiduría y discernimiento los halló diez veces más inteligentes que todos los magos y hechiceros de su reino. 21 Fue así como Daniel se quedó en Babilonia hasta el primer año del rey Ciro.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 13:1-7

Dios ha establecido la autoridad gubernamental.

13 Todos deben someterse a las autoridades públicas, pues no hay autoridad que Dios no haya dispuesto, así que las que existen fueron establecidas por él. 2 Por lo tanto, todo el que se opone a la autoridad se rebela contra lo que Dios ha instituido. Los que así proceden recibirán castigo. 3 Porque los gobernantes no están para infundir terror a los que hacen lo bueno sino a los que hacen lo malo. ¿Quieres librarte del miedo a la autoridad? Haz lo bueno, y tendrás su aprobación, 4 pues está al servicio de Dios para tu bien. Pero si haces lo malo, entonces debes tener miedo. No en vano lleva la espada, pues está al servicio de Dios para impartir justicia y castigar al malhechor. 5 Así que es necesario someterse a las autoridades, no sólo para evitar el castigo sino también por razones de conciencia.

6 Por eso mismo pagan ustedes impuestos, pues las autoridades están al servicio de Dios, dedicadas precisamente a gobernar. 7 Paguen a cada uno lo que le corresponda: si deben impuestos, paguen los impuestos; si deben contribuciones, paguen las contribuciones; al que deban respeto, muéstrenle respeto; al que deban honor, ríndanle honor.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

15 Entonces salieron los fariseos y tramaron cómo tenderle a Jesús una trampa con sus mismas palabras. 16 Enviaron algunos de sus discípulos junto con los herodianos, los cuales le dijeron: —Maestro, sabemos que eres un hombre íntegro y que enseñas el camino de Dios de acuerdo con la verdad. No te dejas influir por nadie porque no te fijas en las apariencias. 17 Danos tu opinión: ¿Está permitido pagar impuestos al césar o no?

18 Conociendo sus malas intenciones, Jesús replicó: —¡Hipócritas! ¿Por qué me tienden trampas? 19 Muéstrenme la moneda para el impuesto. Y se la enseñaron. 20 —¿De quién son esta imagen y esta inscripción?—les preguntó.

21 —Del césar—respondieron.

—Entonces denle al césar lo que es del césar y a Dios lo que es de Dios.

22 Al oír esto, se quedaron asombrados. Así que lo dejaron y se fueron.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

DIVINE SERVICE

SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—CHRISTIANS LIVE IN TWO KINGDOMS

This weekend is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of the Independence of the United States of America. American citizens from many backgrounds are celebrating in many ways. What makes Christian citizens different? Christian citizenship is not connected to a particular political party. Christian citizenship is not connected to particular civic activities. Christians understand that they live in two kingdoms. God does not need our good works, but our neighbors do. God’s Word informs our choice of political activities as we seek to be faithful to our calling as Christian citizens.

Let us pray to the Lord: Almighty God, You come into our hearts, you know our desires, you see our most intimate secrets; cleanse us by the Holy Spirit, so that we are able to love, worship, and glorify you as you deserve; we ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

Gracious God, our heavenly Father, your mercy attends us all our days. Be our strength and support amid the wearisome changes of this world, and at life’s end, grant us your promised rest and the full joys of your salvation; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READING Daniel 1:3–21

We learn from Daniel how to live in two kingdoms.

3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.[b] 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.

6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

18 At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service. 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. 21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

SECOND READING Romans 13:1-7

God has established governmental authority.

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
