SERVICIO DIVINO

CUARTO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—LLAMADOS: PARACOMBATIR EL MIEDO

Los creyentes en Dios y sus ministros siempre han sido perseguidos. Los líderes religiosos de Jerusalén intentaron silenciar la verdad, pero solo lograron que la gente saliera a predicar la Palabra por toda la tierra. El Imperio romano persiguió a los cristianos con hogueras y leones, pero la Iglesia de Dios experimentó un crecimiento explosivo. En tiempos de Martín Lutero, tanto el papa como el emperador intentaron frenar el movimiento del evangelio que se propagaba desde Alemania, pero Dios impulsó a muchas personas a proclamar su verdad. Dios quiere que su pueblo persevere en la fe y predique la Palabra, aun frente a la oposición.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Dios todopoderoso, nuestro Padre celestial, en su gran misericordia nos ha dado a su Hijo, y por medio de él nos perdona todos nuestros pecados. A los que creen en Jesucristo, Dios les conceda el poder de ser hijos e hijas suyos, y les concede su Espíritu Santo. Todos los que creen y son bautizados serán salvos. PRIMERA LECTURA Jeremías 20:7–13

Jeremías se niega a abandonar la fe, incluso cuando es golpeado y puesto en el cepo.

      Fuiste más fuerte que yo, y me venciste.
      Todo el mundo se burla de mí; }
      se ríen de mí todo el tiempo.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 2 Timoteo 4:1–8

Pablo nos anima a mantener la fe incluso ante las dificultades.

En presencia de Dios y de Cristo Jesús, que ha de venir en su reino y que juzgará a los vivos y a los muertos, te doy este solemne encargo: 2 Predica la Palabra; persiste en hacerlo, sea o no sea oportuno; corrige, reprende y anima con mucha paciencia, sin dejar de enseñar. 3 Porque llegará el tiempo en que no van a tolerar la sana doctrina, sino que, llevados de sus propios deseos, se rodearán de maestros que les digan las novelerías que quieren oír. 4 Dejarán de escuchar la verdad y se volverán a los mitos. 5 Tú, por el contrario, sé prudente en todas las circunstancias, soporta los sufrimientos, dedícate a la evangelización; cumple con los deberes de tu ministerio.

6 Yo, por mi parte, ya estoy a punto de ser ofrecido como un sacrificio, y el tiempo de mi partida ha llegado. 7 He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, me he mantenido en la fe. 8 Por lo demás me espera la corona de justicia que el Señor, el juez justo, me otorgará en aquel día; y no sólo a mí, sino también a todos los que con amor hayan esperado su venida.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

Jesús nos hace valientes para confesarlo en público.

5 Jesús envió a estos doce con las siguientes instrucciones:

21 »El hermano entregará a la muerte al hermano, y el padre al hijo. Los hijos se rebelarán contra sus padres y harán que los maten. 22 Por causa de mi nombre todo el mundo los odiará, pero el que se mantenga firme hasta el fin será salvo. 23 Cuando los persigan en una ciudad, huyan a otra. Les aseguro que no terminarán de recorrer las ciudades de Israel antes de que venga el Hijo del hombre.

24 »El discípulo no es superior a su maestro, ni el siervo superior a su amo. 25 Basta con que el discípulo sea como su maestro, y el siervo como su amo. Si al jefe de la casa lo han llamado Beelzebú, ¡cuánto más a los de su familia!

26 »Así que no les tengan miedo; porque no hay nada encubierto que no llegue a revelarse, ni nada escondido que no llegue a conocerse. 27 Lo que les digo en la oscuridad, díganlo ustedes a plena luz; lo que se les susurra al oído, proclámenlo desde las azoteas. 28 No teman a los que matan el cuerpo pero no pueden matar el alma. Teman más bien al que puede destruir alma y cuerpo en el infierno. 29 ¿No se venden dos gorriones por una monedita? Sin embargo, ni uno de ellos caerá a tierra sin que lo permita el Padre; 30 y él les tiene contados a ustedes aun los cabellos de la cabeza. 31 Así que no tengan miedo; ustedes valen más que muchos gorriones.

32 »A cualquiera que me reconozca delante de los demás, yo también lo reconoceré delante de mi Padre que está en el cielo. 33 Pero a cualquiera que me desconozca delante de los demás, yo también lo desconoceré delante de mi Padre que está en el cielo.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

De pie por favor

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Small Groups & Bible Studies—At St. Peter, our goal is to build lives on Christ, the Rock. Because we want every member to have a setting where sincere questions can be asked, struggles shared, and encouragement trusted, we have 7+ regular Bible studies or small groups at St. Peter! INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—CALLED: TO BATTLE FEAR

Believers in God and their ministers have always been persecuted. Religious leaders in Jerusalem tried to muzzle the truth, but they only succeeded in sending people to preach the Word throughout the land. The Roman Empire persecuted Christians with stakes and lions, but God’s Church exploded with growth. In Martin Luther’s day, both pope and emperor tried to limit the gospel movement that was spreading from Germany, but God led many people to speak his truth. God wants his people to keep the faith and preach the Word even in the face of opposition.

Let us pray to the Lord: Almighty God, You come into our hearts, you know our desires, you see our most intimate secrets; cleanse us by the Holy Spirit, so that we are able to love, worship, and glorify you as you deserve; we ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

Jeremiah refuses to abandon the faith even when beaten and put in stocks.

7You deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived;

proclaiming violence and destruction.
So the word of the Lord has brought me
insult and reproach all day long.

Paul encourages us to keep the faith even in the face of difficulty.

1In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
