SERVICIO DIVINO

¡Alelu, Aleluya! (estribillo)

estr Aleluya, Aleluya, Aleluya, Aleluya

2 No sólo de pan el hombre vivirá,
Sino de cada palabra
Que procede de la boca de Dios.
¡Alelu, Aleluya! (estribillo)

1 Aclamen alegres al SEÑOR, habitantes de toda la tierra;
      2 adoren al SEÑOR con regocijo.
      Preséntense ante él
      con cánticos de júbilo.
      3 Reconozcan que el SEÑOR es Dios;
      él nos hizo, y somos suyos.
      Somos su pueblo, ovejas de su prado.

      4 Entren por sus puertas con acción de gracias;
      vengan a sus atrios con himnos de alabanza;
      denle gracias, alaben su nombre.
      5 Porque el SEÑOR es bueno y su gran amor es eterno;
      su fidelidad permanece para siempre.

SEGUNDA LECTURA                                                                                                                                             1 Corintios 4:1–7

    este mundo-al transitar;
Pasos falsos evitemos,
    Su-enseñanza-al observar.
Siempre-andemos en la senda
    de verdad que nos trazó
    Y-el ejemplo que dejó,
obedientes imitemos.
    ¡Buen Jesús, conmigo sé;
    y-en tus pasos seguiré!

2 Con el buen Jesús suframos
    sin desmayo-y sin gemir;
Tras las penas que pasamos
    paz y gozo-han de venir.
Las tormentas de la vida
    con su-amor se vencerán
    Y la fe más firme-harán
por la gloria prometida.
    ¡Buen Jesús, si sufro-aquí,
    gozaré contigo-allí!

3 Con el buen Jesús vivamos,
    pues él vive,-y vida da;
A la muerte no temamos,

    Que-obedece-en humildad
su llamado-y mandamiento.
    ¡Buen Jesús, mi Dios y Rey,
    guárdame-en tu santa grey!

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE                                                                                                          El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Tú nos has hecho y somos tuyos.

Muévelos a reflejar tu amor.

DIVINE SERVICE

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—SAY IT OUT LOUD: JESUS LEADS US

The Law was given through Moses. He was a marvelous leader of his people, but he could not take them to the Promised Land. The Law can never get God’s people to the promised land. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Joshua, the successor of Moses, defeated the enemies of the people and led them into the Promised Land. Jesus defeats our enemies and shepherds us as his flock. The gracious Gospel of forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus is the only way to the promised land of heaven. Jesus leads us all the way there.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name.  Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

Amen.

GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father,
Glory be to the Son,
Glory be to the Spirit,
Now and forever, amen.

You share the same glory as God the Father. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

FIRST READING                                                                                                                                          Numbers 27:15–23

As Moses’ life and ministry were coming to an end, God had Moses appoint Joshua to take his place.

15Moses said to the Lord, 16“May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

18So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. 20Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. 21He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.

This is the Word of God.
We praise you, Lord.

PSALM OF THE DAY                                                                                                                                                       Psalm 100

1Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him
with joyful songs.
3Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

SECOND READING                                                                                                                                          1 Corinthians 4:1–7

Paul wrote to a troubled congregation to call them to repentance and to reveal the mystery of the gospel.

1This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. 2Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.

6Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other. 7For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

This is the Word of God.
We praise you, Lord.

GOSPEL                                                                                                                                                    Matthew 9:35—10:8

Jesus demonstrates compassion and leadership by appointing the twelve to ministry.

35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

1Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

This is the Gospel of God.
We praise you, Lord.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE

HYMN OF THE DAY 704 Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus

1 Let us ever walk with Jesus,
    follow his example pure,
flee the world which would deceive us
    and to sin our souls allure.
Ever in his footsteps treading,
    body here, yet soul above,
    full of faith and hope and love,
let us do the Father’s bidding.
    Faithful Lord, abide with me;
    Savior, lead; I follow thee.

2 Let us suffer here with Jesus,
    to his image e’er conform;
heaven’s glory soon will please us,
    sunshine follow on the storm.
Though we sow in tears of sorrow,
    we shall reap in heav’nly joy,
    and the fears that now annoy
shall be laughter on the morrow.
    Christ, I suffer here with thee;
    there, O share thy joy with me.

4 Let us gladly live with Jesus;
    since he’s risen from the dead,
death and grave must soon release us.
    Jesus, thou art now our head.
We are truly thine own members,
    where thou livest, there live we;
    take and own us constantly,
faithful Friend, as thy dear brethren.
    Jesus, here I live to thee,
    also there eternally.

CONFESSION OF FAITH                                                                                                               Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN 835 Precious Lord, Take My Hand

1 Precious Lord, take my hand,
lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.
Through the storm, through the night,
lead me on to the light.
Take my hand, precious Lord;
lead me home.

2 When my way grows drear,
precious Lord, linger near,
when my life is almost gone,
hear my cry, hear my call,
hold my hand lest I fall.
Take my hand, precious Lord;
lead me home.

3 When the darkness appears
and the night draws near
and the day is almost gone,
at the river I stand,
guide my feet, hold my hand.
Take my hand, precious Lord;
lead me home.
