CUARTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA—EXACTAMENTE LO QUE NECESITO: VISTA

Reconozco que estoy espiritualmente ciego cuando no conozco a Jesús. No puedo ver el mundo tal como es en realidad. Me siento tentado a ver como bueno lo que es dañino, y como carente de sentido lo que es bueno. No puedo ver el peligro que acecha detrás de cada tentación. Comprendo que Jesús devolvió la vista física a los ciegos; pero también me otorga visión espiritual. Él dijo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo». Él viene a hacer brillar su luz en mis ojos oscurecidos, para que yo lo vea y viva.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 42:14–21

SEGUNDA LECTURA Efesios 5:8–14

Una vez que he visto la luz de Cristo, me esfuerzo por dejar atrás las obras de las tinieblas.

8 Porque ustedes antes eran oscuridad, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de luz 9 (el fruto de la luz consiste en toda bondad, justicia y verdad) 10 y comprueben lo que agrada al Señor. 11 No tengan nada que ver con las obras infructuosas de la oscuridad, sino más bien denúncienlas, 12 porque da vergüenza aun mencionar lo que los desobedientes hacen en secreto. 13 Pero todo lo que la luz pone al descubierto se hace visible, 14 porque la luz es lo que hace que todo sea visible. Por eso se dice:

«Despiértate, tú que duermes,

levántate de entre los muertos,

y te alumbrará Cristo.»

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Juan 9:1–7,13–17,34–39

Jesús capacita a un hombre que había nacido ciego para verlo, tanto física como espiritualmente.

1 A su paso, Jesús vio a un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento. 2 Y sus discípulos le preguntaron: —Rabí, para que este hombre haya nacido ciego, ¿quién pecó, él o sus padres?

3 —Ni él pecó, ni sus padres—respondió Jesús—, sino que esto sucedió para que la obra de Dios se hiciera evidente en su vida. 4 Mientras sea de día, tenemos que llevar a cabo la obra del que me envió. Viene la noche cuando nadie puede trabajar. 5 Mientras esté yo en el mundo, luz soy del mundo.

6 Dicho esto, escupió en el suelo, hizo barro con la saliva y se lo untó en los ojos al ciego, diciéndole: 7 —Ve y lávate en el estanque de Siloé (que significa: Enviado). El ciego fue y se lavó, y al volver ya veía.

13 Llevaron ante los fariseos al que había sido ciego. 14 Era sábado cuando Jesús hizo el barro y le abrió los ojos al ciego. 15 Por eso los fariseos, a su vez, le preguntaron cómo había recibido la vista. —Me untó barro en los ojos, me lavé, y ahora veo—respondió.

16 Algunos de los fariseos comentaban: «Ese hombre no viene de parte de Dios, porque no respeta el sábado.» Otros objetaban: «¿Cómo puede un pecador hacer semejantes señales?» Y había desacuerdo entre ellos.

17 Por eso interrogaron de nuevo al ciego: —¿Y qué opinas tú de él? Fue a ti a quien te abrió los ojos.

—Yo digo que es profeta—contestó.

34 Ellos replicaron: —Tú, que naciste sumido en pecado, ¿vas a darnos lecciones? Y lo expulsaron.

35 Jesús se enteró de que habían expulsado a aquel hombre, y al encontrarlo le preguntó: —¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?

36 —¿Quién es, Señor? Dímelo, para que crea en él.

37 —Pues ya lo has visto—le contestó Jesús—; es el que está hablando contigo.

38 —Creo, Señor—declaró el hombre. Y, postrándose, lo adoró.

39 Entonces Jesús dijo: —Yo he venido a este mundo para juzgarlo, para que los ciegos vean, y los que ven se queden ciegos.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

Y creo en una sola iglesia, santa, apostólica, y universal. Reconozco un solo bautismo para el perdón de los pecados, y espero la resurrección de los muertos y la vida del mundo que ha de venir. INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT—EXACTLY WHAT I NEED: SIGHT

I recognize that I am spiritually blind when I don’t know Jesus. I cannot see the world as it really is. I am tempted to see what is harmful as good, and what is good as meaningless. I cannot see the danger that lurks behind every temptation. I realize that Jesus gave physical sight to the blind. But he also gives me spiritual vision. He said, “I am the light of the world.” He comes to shine his light into my darkened eyes so that I see him and live.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

FIRST READING Isaiah 42:14–21

God promises to lead the blind to safety and turn their darkness to light.

14“For a long time I have kept silent,
I have been quiet and held myself back.
But now, like a woman in childbirth,
I cry out, I gasp and pant.
15I will lay waste the mountains and hills
and dry up all their vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands
and dry up the pools.
16I will lead the blind by ways they have not known,
along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light before them

Once I have seen the light of Christ, I strive to leave deeds of darkness behind.

Jesus enables a man who had been born blind to see him both physically and spiritually.

1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”

16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.

17Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”

The man replied, “He is a prophet.”

34To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.

35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36“Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

37Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
