PENTECOSTÉS 12—VERDADES INESPERADAS—LA IGLESIA ES PARA TODOS

«¡Todos son bienvenidos!» ¿Es eso cierto en nuestra iglesia? ¿O está la iglesia destinada solamente a personas de cierta procedencia que se comportan de la manera correcta, a la «buena gente de iglesia»? ¿Es posible que un desconocido entre inesperadamente en la iglesia y que, por alguna razón, te preguntes: «¿Qué hace aquí alguien así?» O quizás te hagas esa pregunta acerca de ti mismo: «Parece que aquí hay personas piadosas. Yo no soy como ellas. ¿De verdad pertenezco aquí?»

Hoy Jesús nos muestra que la Iglesia es para todos. Todos nosotros, sin importar nuestra edad, origen étnico, sexo o posición social, tenemos el mismo problema del pecado. Y todos tenemos el mismo Salvador. Todo aquel que viene a la Iglesia de Cristo y clama: «¡Señor, ten misericordia!» es bienvenido.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Oremos.

Dios misericordioso, en Cristo reúnes a personas de cerca y de lejos en la comunión de tu Iglesia. Abre nuestros ojos a tu plan de salvación y muévenos a recibir a todos los que buscan tu salvación, para que juntos nos regocijemos en el banquete de tu amor; por medio de tu Hijo, Jesucristo nuestro Señor, quien vive y reina contigo y con el Espíritu Santo, siempre un solo Dios, por los siglos de los siglos.

PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 56:1,6–8

El Señor anunció al mundo que todos los que temen a Dios tendrían un lugar en la casa de su Iglesia.

56 Así dice el SEÑOR:

      «Observen el derecho
      y practiquen la justicia,
      porque mi salvación está por llegar;
      mi justicia va a manifestarse.

      6 Y a los extranjeros que se han unido al SEÑOR

SEGUNDA LECTURA Efesios 2:13–22

Cristo toma a extranjeros y desconocidos y los edifica para formar un templo santo: su Iglesia.

13 Pero ahora en Cristo Jesús, a ustedes que antes estaban lejos, Dios los ha acercado mediante la sangre de Cristo.

14 Porque Cristo es nuestra paz: de los dos pueblos ha hecho uno solo, derribando mediante su sacrificio el muro de enemistad que nos separaba, 15 pues anuló la ley con sus mandamientos y requisitos. Esto lo hizo para crear en sí mismo de los dos pueblos una nueva humanidad al hacer la paz, 16 para reconciliar con Dios a ambos en un solo cuerpo mediante la cruz, por la que dio muerte a la enemistad. 17 Él vino y proclamó paz a ustedes que estaban lejos y paz a los que estaban cerca. 18 Pues por medio de él tenemos acceso al Padre por un mismo Espíritu.

19 Por lo tanto, ustedes ya no son extraños ni extranjeros, sino conciudadanos de los santos y miembros de la familia de Dios, 20 edificados sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles y los profetas, siendo Cristo Jesús mismo la piedra angular. 21 En él todo el edificio, bien armado, se va levantando para llegar a ser un templo santo en el Señor. 22 En él también ustedes son edificados juntamente para ser morada de Dios por su Espíritu.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Mateo 15:21–28

Ante una prueba de Jesús, una mujer cananea demuestra una gran fe en la promesa de Dios para todos.

21 Partiendo de allí, Jesús se retiró a la región de Tiro y Sidón. 22 Una mujer cananea de las inmediaciones salió a su encuentro, gritando: —¡Señor, Hijo de David, ten compasión de mí! Mi hija sufre terriblemente por estar endemoniada. 23 Jesús no le respondió palabra. Así que sus discípulos se acercaron a él y le rogaron: —Despídela, porque viene detrás de nosotros gritando. 24 —No fui enviado sino a las ovejas perdidas del pueblo de Israel—contestó Jesús. 25 La mujer se acercó y, arrodillándose delante de él, le suplicó: —¡Señor, ayúdame! 26 Él le respondió: —No está bien quitarles el pan a los hijos y echárselo a los perros. 27 —Sí, Señor; pero hasta los perros comen las migajas que caen de la mesa de sus amos. 28 —¡Mujer, qué grande es tu fe!—contestó Jesús—. Que se cumpla lo que quieres. Y desde ese mismo momento quedó sana su hija.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Because we want every member to have a setting where sincere questions can be asked, struggles shared, and encouragement trusted, we have 7+ regular Bible studies or small groups at St. Peter! INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

PENTECOST 12—UNEXPECTED TRUTHS—THE CHURCH IS FOR ALL PEOPLE

“All are welcome!” Is that true at our church? Or is church meant only for people of the right heritage who behave the right way, “good church folk”? Is it conceivable that a stranger could walk into church unexpectedly and for some reason you would ask yourself, “What is someone like that doing here?” Or perhaps you ask that question about yourself. “There seem to be godly people here. I’m not like them. Do I really belong?”

Today Jesus shows us that the Church is for all people. All of us—regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, or social status—have the same problem of sin. And we all have the same Savior. Anyone who comes to Christ’s Church and cries out “Lord, have mercy!” is welcome.

In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Let us pray to the Lord: Almighty God, You come into our hearts, you know our desires, you see our most intimate secrets; cleanse us by the Holy Spirit, so that we are able to love, worship, and glorify you as you deserve; we ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

The Lord told the world that all God-fearing people would have a place in the house of his Church.

1This is what the Lord says:

“Maintain justice
and do what is right,
for my salvation is close at hand

6And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord
to minister to him,
to love the name of the Lord,
and to be his servants,

Christ takes foreigners and strangers and builds them into a holy temple, his Church.

14For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

In the face of a test from Jesus, a Canaanite woman demonstrates great faith in God’s promise for all people.

21Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” 23Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 27“Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” 28Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
