SERVICIO DIVINO

VIGÉSIMO SEGUNDO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—JUICIO/PAZ

Si hicieras una lista de cosas que podrían hacer que la sociedad fuera más pacífica, ¿incluirías “más juicio”? Probablemente no. Mucha gente supone que el juicio conduce al conflicto, no a la paz. Sin embargo, la falta de juicio es un lujo que muchos no se pueden permitir. Nuestro mundo está lleno de víctimas de abuso, violencia y opresión. En muchos casos, este mal pasa desapercibido y queda impune. Un futuro sin la esperanza de justicia significa que no hay paz. Si no hay esperanza de justicia, las víctimas se verían conducidas a la desesperación total o consumidas por el deseo de venganza. Un futuro que incluye el juicio, en cambio, les da a quienes sufren injusticias la paz de saber que un día habrá justicia perfecta.

Cuando sufrimos injusticias terribles, ¿cuáles son nuestras opciones? ¿Tomar la justicia por nuestra mano? ¿Desesperarnos? Jesús nos ofrece una mejor opción: confiar en que cumplirá su promesa de regresar y traer justicia. ¿El efecto de esa promesa? Tenemos paz, sabiendo que todo mal será eventualmente corregido por el único Juez justo.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Todos los soberbios y todos los malvados serán como paja, y aquel día les prenderá fuego hasta dejarlos sin raíz ni rama—dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso—. 2 Pero para ustedes que temen mi nombre, se levantará el sol de justicia trayendo en sus rayos salud. 4 »Acuérdense de la ley de mi siervo Moisés. Recuerden los preceptos y las leyes que le di en Horeb para todo Israel.

5 »Estoy por enviarles al profeta Elías antes que llegue el día del SEÑOR, día grande y terrible. 6 Él hará que los padres se reconcilien con sus hijos y los hijos con sus padres, y así no vendré a herir la tierra con destrucción total.»

SEGUNDA LECTURA 2 Tesalonicenses 1:5–10

Los cristianos de Tesalónica sufrían persecución. Para fortalecer su perseverancia, Pablo les aseguró el juicio y el castigo venideros.

5 Todo esto prueba que el juicio de Dios es justo, y por tanto él los considera dignos de su reino, por el cual están sufriendo. 6 Dios, que es justo, pagará con sufrimiento a quienes los hacen sufrir a ustedes. 7 Y a ustedes que sufren, les dará descanso, lo mismo que a nosotros. Esto sucederá cuando el Señor Jesús se manifieste desde el cielo entre llamas de fuego, con sus poderosos ángeles, 8 para castigar a los que no reconocen a Dios ni obedecen el evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesús. 9 Ellos sufrirán el castigo de la destrucción eterna, lejos de la presencia del Señor y de la majestad de su poder, 10 el día en que venga para ser glorificado por medio de sus santos y admirado por todos los que hayan creído, entre los cuales están ustedes porque creyeron el testimonio que les dimos.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Lucas 21:5–19

Jesús nos enseña que, cuando seamos perseguidos, no busquemos venganza. En cambio, debemos mantenernos firmes y perseverar, confiando en la justicia del juicio venidero.

5 Algunos de sus discípulos comentaban acerca del templo, de cómo estaba adornado con hermosas piedras y con ofrendas dedicadas a Dios. Pero Jesús dijo: 6 —En cuanto a todo esto que ven ustedes, llegará el día en que no quedará piedra sobre piedra; todo será derribado.

7 —Maestro—le preguntaron—, ¿cuándo sucederá eso, y cuál será la señal de que está a punto de suceder?

8 —Tengan cuidado; no se dejen engañar—les advirtió Jesús—. Vendrán muchos que usando mi nombre dirán: “Yo soy”, y: “El tiempo está cerca.” No los sigan ustedes. 9 Cuando sepan de guerras y de revoluciones, no se asusten. Es necesario que eso suceda primero, pero el fin no vendrá en seguida.

10 »Se levantará nación contra nación, y reino contra reino—continuó—. 11 Habrá grandes terremotos, hambre y epidemias por todas partes, cosas espantosas y grandes señales del cielo.

12 »Pero antes de todo esto, echarán mano de ustedes y los perseguirán. Los entregarán a las sinagogas y a las cárceles, y por causa de mi nombre los llevarán ante reyes y gobernadores. 13 Así tendrán ustedes la oportunidad de dar testimonio ante ellos. 14 Pero tengan en cuenta que no hay por qué preparar una defensa de antemano, 15 pues yo mismo les daré tal elocuencia y sabiduría para responder, que ningún adversario podrá resistirles ni contradecirles. 16 Ustedes serán traicionados aun por sus padres, hermanos, parientes y amigos, y a algunos de ustedes se les dará muerte. 17 Todo el mundo los odiará por causa de mi nombre. 18 Pero no se perderá ni un solo cabello de su cabeza. 19 Si se mantienen firmes, se salvarán.

SERMÓN Filipenses 3:17—4:1

17 Hermanos, sigan todos mi ejemplo, y fíjense en los que se comportan conforme al modelo que les hemos dado. 18 Como les he dicho a menudo, y ahora lo repito hasta con lágrimas, muchos se comportan como enemigos de la cruz de Cristo. 19 Su destino es la destrucción, adoran al dios de sus propios deseos y se enorgullecen de lo que es su vergüenza. INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—JUDGMENT/PEACE

If you were making a list of things that might make society more peaceful, would you include “more judgment”? Likely not. Many people assume that judgement leads to conflict, not peace. However, a lack of judgment is a luxury many cannot afford. Our world is full of victims of abuse, violence, and oppression. In many cases this evil goes unnoticed and unpunished. A future without the hope of judgment means no peace. If there is no hope of judgment, victims would be driven either into total despair or to be consumed by the desire for revenge. A future that includes judgment, however, gives those who are wronged the peace of knowing that one day there will be perfect justice.

When we are horribly wronged, what are our options? Taking matters into our own hands? Despair? Jesus provides a better option. Trust that he will keep his promise to return, bringing judgment. The effect of that promise? We have peace, knowing that every wrong will eventually be righted by the one righteous Judge.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

FIRST READING Malachi 4:1-6

On the day of judgment, those who do evil will be laid low. But that day will mean rescue for those who revere the name of the LORD.

1“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them. 2But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. 3Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.

4“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.

5“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

SECOND READING 2 Thessalonians 1:5–10

The Thessalonian Christians were suffering a persecution. To empower their perseverance, Paul assures them of the coming judgment and punishment.

5All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

GOSPEL Luke 21:5–19

Jesus instructs us, when persecuted, to not seek vengeance. Instead, we are to stand firm and persevere, confident in the justice of coming judgment.

5Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”

7“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

8He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

12“But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13And so you will bear testimony to me. 14But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17Everyone will hate you because of me. 18But not a hair of your head will perish. 19Stand firm, and you will win life.

SERMON Philippians 3:17—4:1

17Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.
