SERVICIO DIVINO

PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO—INMINENTE LLEGADA DEL REY

¿Recuerdas la sensación cuando alguien importante está a punto de llegar a tu casa? Es una mezcla de anticipación, emoción y nerviosismo. ¿Hiciste todos los preparativos necesarios? ¿Se alegrará esa persona de verte? ¿Cuándo y cómo llegará? ¿Habrá alguna sorpresa?

Durante estas semanas previas a la Navidad, anticipamos la inminente llegada de Jesús. ¡Es una persona importante! Estamos a punto de celebrar su nacimiento. Podría regresar el día del juicio en cualquier momento. Pero en el culto nos damos cuenta de que él impacta nuestras vidas cuando leemos la Biblia y administramos los sacramentos. De repente, sentimos la emoción de una llegada inminente.

El rey es una persona importante. Su llegada a nuestra casa puede significar algo muy diferente para nosotros según nuestra relación con él. Podríamos temer su llegada si esperamos que nos castigue. Podríamos darle la bienvenida si esperamos que nos valide. En cualquier caso, esperamos que su llegada sea algo importante. ¿Cómo nos sentiríamos si supiéramos que su llegada será informal y familiar?

El Adviento marca el comienzo de un nuevo Año Eclesiástico. Comenzamos por el final, viendo al Rey Jesús entrar en Jerusalén montado en un burrito, sabiendo perfectamente que lo matarían antes del fin de semana. Los acontecimientos del Domingo de Ramos sirven como un microcosmos de toda la obra de Jesús, demostrando que el Rey del universo estaba dispuesto a humillarse y soportar cualquier cosa por nuestra salvación. Precisamente por eso vino Cristo. Por eso esperamos su inminente llegada no con preocupación, sino con alegría.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Encendemos una vela de Adviento, recordando a Jesús, que viene de nuevo. Vendrá a reunir a su pueblo de todas partes, tanto a los vivos como a los muertos.

Recordamos a Jesús, que vendrá al final de los tiempos. Ninguno de nosotros sabe qué día será ese.

Escuchamos su llamado a mirar.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Filipenses 4:4–7

Nuestra vida actual se transforma del nerviosismo al entusiasmo y alegría por la llegada del Rey.

4 Alégrense siempre en el Señor. Insisto: ¡Alégrense! 5 Que su amabilidad sea evidente a todos. El Señor está cerca. 6 No se inquieten por nada; más bien, en toda ocasión, con oración y ruego, presenten sus peticiones a Dios y denle gracias. 7 Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, cuidará sus corazones y sus pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Mateo 21:1–11

El Rey de toda la creación llega con total humildad, dispuesto a hacer todo lo necesario para salvarnos de las consecuencias de nuestro pecado.

21 Cuando se acercaban a Jerusalén y llegaron a Betfagué, al monte de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos discípulos 2 con este encargo: «Vayan a la aldea que tienen enfrente, y ahí mismo encontrarán una burra atada, y un burrito con ella. Desátenlos y tráiganmelos. 3 Si alguien les dice algo, respóndanle que el Señor los necesita, pero que ya los devolverá.»

4 Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo dicho por el profeta:

5 «Digan a la hija de Sión:

“Mira, tu rey viene hacia ti,

humilde y montado en un burro,

en un burrito, cría de una bestia de carga.” »

6 Los discípulos fueron e hicieron como les había mandado Jesús. 7 Llevaron la burra y el burrito, y pusieron encima sus mantos, sobre los cuales se sentó Jesús. 8 Había mucha gente que tendía sus mantos sobre el camino; otros cortaban ramas de los árboles y las esparcían en el camino. 9 Tanto la gente que iba delante de él como la que iba detrás, gritaba:

—¡Hosanna al Hijo de David!

—¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!

—¡Hosanna en las alturas!

10 Cuando Jesús entró en Jerusalén, toda la ciudad se conmovió. —¿Quién es éste?—preguntaban.

11 —Éste es el profeta Jesús, de Nazaret de Galilea—contestaba la gente.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Levantemos nuestras cabezas y preparemos nuestros corazones mientras nos preparamos para celebrar el nacimiento de Cristo, nuestro Rey celestial.

A nuestro alrededor vemos gente que camina en la oscuridad, inconsciente del pecado en el mundo y de la venida de tu Hijo, que está más cerca de nosotros ahora que cuando creímos por primera vez. Haznos brillar como luces en este mundo oscuro mientras vivimos por la fe, fortalecidos por tu Espíritu que obra en nosotros con la Palabra.

¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor! ¡Hosanna en las alturas!

Te damos gracias por las autoridades, padres en el hogar, pastores, maestros y ancianos en la iglesia que velan por nuestras almas, y por aquellos en el gobierno que tienen la responsabilidad de velar por la seguridad de nuestros cuerpos. Mantenlos fieles en sus tareas, bendícelos y haz que sean una bendición para nosotros.

¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor! ¡Hosanna en las alturas!

Oramos por quienes esperan el alivio de sus enfermedades, tanto físicas como mentales, [especialmente…]. Dales paciencia mientras escuchan la promesa de tu bondad, incluso en el sufrimiento. Sana, restaura y alivia todo dolor y tristeza según se ajuste a tu bondadosa voluntad y plan.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT—IMMINENT ARRIVAL OF THE KING

Do you remember the feeling when someone important is about to arrive at your place? It’s a mixture of anticipation and excitement and nervousness. Did you make all the correct preparations? Will the person be happy to see you? When and how will the person arrive? Will there be any surprises?

During these weeks before Christmas, we anticipate the imminent arrival of Jesus. He’s an important person! We are about to celebrate his birth. He could return on judgment day at any time. But in worship we realize that he impacts our lives when the Bible is read and when the sacraments are administered. Suddenly we feel the excitement of an imminent arrival.

The king is an important person. His arrival at our place can mean something quite different to us depending on our relationship with him. We might fear his arrival if we expect him to punish us. We might welcome his arrival if we expect him to validate us. Either way, we expect his arrival to be a big deal. How would it make us feel if we heard that his arrival would be informal and familiar?

Advent marks the start of a new Church Year. We begin at the end, watching King Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a donkey colt, knowing full well that he will be killed before the end of the week. The events of Palm Sunday serve as a microcosm for all Jesus’ work, proving the King of the universe was willing to humble himself and endure anything for our salvation. That is precisely why Christ came. That is why we anticipate his imminent arrival not with worry but with joy.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.
