SERVICE OF THE WORD
ALL SAINTS DAY
God grants the status of “saint” (which means “holy one”) to every believer. It might appear that status is of little practical value. If you achieve the status “billionaire” or “celebrity” or “senator” your life is going to be vastly different than most other people, most likely better. But if God calls you a saint, just like everyone else, you will struggle with trials, temptations, and sin. Being a saint does not make life easier. In some ways it makes life more difficult as we struggle against a world that is hostile toward Christ. This might lead us to ask, “Is it really that big a deal that God calls us saints?”
For centuries, the Church has answered that question by celebrating the Festival of All Saints. This week we get a peek at the saints who have died and now live in the glory of Christ’s light. Through eyes of faith, we see the saints enjoying glory in the place where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:1-6). We realize what a precious gift this status of saint actually is. We understand that soon enough we shall join all the saints in that glorious heavenly city. And that gives us amazing stamina to face the challenges of this world with the strength Christ gives to all his saints.
OPENING HYMN 885 There Is a Higher Throne
1 There is a higher throne
than all this world has known,
where faithful ones from ev’ry tongue
will one day come.
Before the Son we’ll stand,
made faultless through the Lamb;
believing hearts find promised grace;
salvation comes. (Refrain)
Ref Hear heaven’s voices sing;
their thund’rous anthem rings
through em’rald courts and sapphire skies;
their praises rise.
All glory, wisdom, pow’r,
strength, thanks, and honor are
to God our King who reigns on high
forevermore.
2 And there we’ll find our home,
our life before the throne;
we’ll honor him in perfect song
where we belong.
He’ll wipe each tear-stained eye
as thirst and hunger die;
the Lamb becomes our Shepherd-King;
we’ll reign with him. (Refrain)

INVOCATION
In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Triune God, be with us through your Word and guide us in your truth.
Eternal Father, we come into your presence desiring to hear what you need to tell us and to believe what you say.
CONFESSION OF SINS
Brothers and sisters, we confess our sins to God, our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ to forgive us.
Lord Jesus, grant us your forgiveness.
God, our heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We were born in sin and we keep on sinning.
We commit sins of thought, word and deed.
The good that we want to do, we do not do.
The evil that we do not want to do, this we keep on doing.
We repent of our sins that now weigh us down.
We beg you to have mercy on us.
Forgive us, Lord.
Help us, O God.
ABSOLUTION
God Almighty, our heavenly Father, has had mercy on us, and because of the perfect life, death, and resurrection of his beloved son, Jesus Christ, he has declared us not guilty.
The forgiveness of all our sins is ours.
In this forgiveness, we have the victory over death and eternal life in heaven with God. I declare to you what God has already done: You are forgiven.
Triune God, thank you for our salvation. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.
Almighty God, you have knit your people together into one holy Church, the body of Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow the example of your blessed saints in lives of faith and willing service and with them at last inherit the inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

FIRST READING Revelation 21:1–6
St. John is allowed to see the home of the saints, the new Jerusalem.
1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.
This is the Word of God.
We praise you, Lord.
SECOND READING Hebrews 11:32–40
For many Christians, their faith was the cause of pain and even death. They faced these troubles with amazing courage and stamina because they knew God has planned something better for his saints.
32And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, 33who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. 35Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground.
39These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, 40since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
This is the Word of God.
We praise you, Lord.

GOSPEL Luke 6:20–23
Jesus teaches that the blessedness of being God’s saint is currently hidden from sight. Yet, one day, that blessedness shall be revealed.
20Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.
23“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
This is the Gospel of God.
We praise you, Lord.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE
HYMN OF THE DAY 576 Amazing Grace
1 Amazing grace—how sweet the sound—
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found,
was blind but now I see.
2 The Lord has promised good to me,
his Word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.
3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
’tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
4 When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we’d first begun.

SERMON Philippians 3:4b–14
If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
7But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.
12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles' Creed ~150 AD
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Lord Jesus Christ, Alpha and Omega, you are the Beginning and End of all things. You have given hope to your people who are poor, hungry, and outcast, that they have a great reward in heaven.
You take delight in your people. You crown the humble with victory.
Fill our hearts with longing for the day when we will see you face to face and you wipe every tear from our eyes.
You take delight in your people. You crown the humble with victory.
Fill your people with such joy that they declare your praise to those without hope, that more people are drawn to you their witness and are saved.
You take delight in your people. You crown the humble with victory.
Change the world through your Word, and through the testimony of your saints in life and death. Cast down those who oppress your people and hinder the gospel, and let your kingdom come.
You take delight in your people. You crown the humble with victory.
Strengthen Christians around the world who are destitute, persecuted and mistreated because of their faith. Keep them firm in the true faith and hold before them the crown of life.
You take delight in your people. You crown the humble with victory.
O Christ our God, you have planned better things for us than mere comfort in this life. Have mercy on those who wait in hope in the midst of suffering. [We pray especially for…] Bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.
You take delight in your people. You crown the humble with victory.
Special prayers and intercessions may follow.
Listen, Lord, to the thoughts and cares of our hearts.
Silent prayer.
O Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Resurrection and the Life, and through your victory you have attained eternal righteousness, joy and holiness for us. Come soon to bring your people a joyful resurrection to life and a homecoming in the eternal paradise of our Father’s kingdom. You, Jesus, are arisen from death, and rule with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever.
Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED
If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:19-20
With hope in Christ and in the resurrection to eternal life, we remember those in this congregation who have died in the last year:
The names of those who have died in the last year are read.
We remember in silence those who have died in previous years, and those who were members of other Christian congregations:
Silence.
For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.
Yes, they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them. Revelation 14:13
Let us pray.
Lord Jesus Christ, you told Mary and Martha that you are the Resurrection and the Life. You promised your disciples that you would prepare a place for them. You promised the repentant thief that he would be with you in Paradise. And through the disciple John, you revealed to us that you will wipe away every tear from our eyes in the Day when there is no death or sorrow or crying or pain. Fill our hearts with these firm and certain promises. Comfort us with the assurance that those who have died in faith now see you face to face. You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a great multitude that no one can count, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

HYMN CAS62 E SSS599 Lord, When You Came to the Seashore
1 Lord, when you came to the seashore
You weren't seeking the wise or the wealthy,
But only asking that I might follow. (refrain)
Ref O Lord, in my eyes you were gazing,
Kindly smiling, my name you were saying;
All I treasured, I have left on the sand there;
Close to you, I will find other seas.
2 Lord, you knew what my boat carried:
Neither money nor weapons for fighting,
But nets for fishing, my daily labor. (refrain)
3 Lord, have you need of my labor,
Hands for service, a heart made for loving,
My arms for lifting the poor and broken? (refrain)
4 Lord, send me where you would have me,
To a village, or heart of the city;
I will remember that you are with me. (refrain)

CLOSING HYMN 890 Jerusalem the Golden sts. 1–3
1 Jerusalem the golden,
with milk and honey blest—
the sight of it refreshes
the weary and oppressed.
I know not, oh, I know not
what joys await us there,
what radiancy of glory,
what bliss beyond compare.
2 They stand, those halls of Zion,
all jubilant with song
and bright with many‿an angel
and all the martyr throng.
The Prince is ever in them,
the daylight is serene;
the pastures of the blessèd
are ever rich and green.
3 There is the throne of David,
and there, from care released,
the shout of them that triumph,
the song of them that feast.
And they who with their leader
have conquered in the fight
forever and forever
are clad in robes of white.
