SERVICIO DIVINO

UNDÉCIMO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—LA PUERTA ES ESTRECHA

Cuando se trata del incómodo tema de quién va al cielo y quién al infierno, es natural querer evitarlo. Una manera de lograrlo es dirigir nuestra atención a preguntas más teóricas. "¿Cómo es el cielo?" "¿Cuántos años estaremos allí?" Hoy alguien pregunta: "Señor, ¿solo unos pocos se salvarán?" Jesús deja de lado todas esas preguntas. En cambio, responde la pregunta que deberíamos hacernos: "¿Cómo puedo salvarme?" Jesús explica que solo hay un camino: entrar por una puerta muy estrecha. ¡Las palabras de Jesús nos duelen profundamente! Porque enseña que es muy fácil desarrollar una falsa sensación de seguridad sobre nuestra posición ante Dios, basada en una familiaridad superficial que tenemos con él. Jesús advierte que muchos que piensan que están en el camino al cielo terminarán excluidos. Estas palabras hirientes de Jesús nos sanan, empujándonos hacia esa puerta estrecha: la fe en él.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 66:18–24

Muchos de los más cercanos a las obras salvadoras de Dios las rechazarán y perecerán. Mientras tanto, muchos que parecían estar lejos del reino oirán de la gracia de Dios, creerán y serán salvos.

18 »Yo, por causa de sus acciones y sus ideas, estoy a punto de reunir a gente de toda nación y lengua; vendrán y verán mi gloria.

19 »Les daré una señal, y a algunos de sus sobrevivientes los enviaré a las naciones: a Tarsis, Pul, Lidia (famosa por sus arqueros), Tubal y Grecia, y a las costas lejanas que no han oído hablar de mi fama ni han visto mi gloria. Ellos anunciarán mi gloria entre las naciones. 20 Y a todos los hermanos que ustedes tienen entre las naciones los traerán a mi monte santo en Jerusalén, como una ofrenda al SEÑOR; los traerán en caballos, en carros de combate y en literas, y en mulas y camellos—dice el SEÑOR—. 22 »Porque así como perdurarán en mi presencia el cielo nuevo y la tierra nueva que yo haré, así también perdurarán el nombre y los descendientes de ustedes—afirma el SEÑOR—. 23 Sucederá que de una luna nueva a otra, y de un sábado a otro, toda la humanidad vendrá a postrarse ante mí—dice el SEÑOR—. 24 Entonces saldrán y contemplarán los cadáveres de los que se rebelaron contra mí. »Porque no morirá el gusano que los devora, ni se apagará el fuego que los consume: ¡repulsivos serán a toda la humanidad!»

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Hebreos 12:18–24

Entrar por la puerta estrecha a la vida eterna no tiene nada que ver con guardar la Ley de Moisés. Tiene todo que ver con Jesús, el mediador del nuevo pacto, quien pagó por nuestros pecados con su sangre.

18 Ustedes no se han acercado a una montaña que se pueda tocar o que esté ardiendo en fuego; ni a oscuridad, tinieblas y tormenta; 19 ni a sonido de trompeta, ni a tal clamor de palabras que quienes lo oyeron suplicaron que no se les hablara más, 20 porque no podían soportar esta orden: «¡Será apedreado todo el que toque la montaña, aunque sea un animal!» 21 Tan terrible era este espectáculo que Moisés dijo: «Estoy temblando de miedo.»

22 Por el contrario, ustedes se han acercado al monte Sión, a la Jerusalén celestial, la ciudad del Dios viviente. Se han acercado a millares y millares de ángeles, a una asamblea gozosa, 23 a la iglesia de los primogénitos inscritos en el cielo. Se han acercado a Dios, el juez de todos; a los espíritus de los justos que han llegado a la perfección; 24 a Jesús, el mediador de un nuevo pacto; y a la sangre rociada, que habla con más fuerza que la de Abel.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

Jesús insta: “Esfuércense por entrar por la puerta estrecha”.

22 Continuando su viaje a Jerusalén, Jesús enseñaba en los pueblos y aldeas por donde pasaba. 23 —Señor, ¿son pocos los que van a salvarse?—le preguntó uno.

24 —Esfuércense por entrar por la puerta estrecha—contestó—, porque les digo que muchos tratarán de entrar y no podrán. 25 Tan pronto como el dueño de la casa se haya levantado a cerrar la puerta, ustedes desde afuera se pondrán a golpear la puerta, diciendo: “Señor, ábrenos.”

Pero él les contestará: “No sé quiénes son ustedes.”

26 Entonces dirán: “Comimos y bebimos contigo, y tú enseñaste en nuestras plazas.”

27 Pero él les contestará: “Les repito que no sé quiénes son ustedes. ¡Apártense de mí, todos ustedes hacedores de injusticia!”

28 »Allí habrá llanto y rechinar de dientes cuando vean en el reino de Dios a Abraham, Isaac, Jacob y a todos los profetas, mientras a ustedes los echan fuera. 29 Habrá quienes lleguen del oriente y del occidente, del norte y del sur, para sentarse al banquete en el reino de Dios. 30 En efecto, hay últimos que serán primeros, y primeros que serán últimos.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

DIVINE SERVICE

ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—THE DOOR IS NARROW

When it comes to the uncomfortable topic of who goes to heaven and who goes to hell, it is natural to want to avoid the issue. One way we do that is to direct our attention to more theoretical questions. “What is heaven like?” “How old will we be there?” Today someone asks, “Lord, are only a few going to be saved?” Jesus brushes all such questions aside. Instead, he answers the question we should be asking. “How might I be saved?” Jesus explains there is only one way—entering through a very narrow door. Jesus’ words cut deep! For he teaches that it is very easy to develop a false sense of security about our standing before God based on some superficial familiarity we have with him. Jesus warns that many who think they are on the path to heaven will end up shut out. These wounding words of Jesus provide healing, pushing us toward that narrow door: faith in him.

Many of those closest to God’s saving acts will reject them and perish. Meanwhile, many who seemed to be far from the kingdom will hear of God’s grace, believe, and be saved.

Entering the narrow door into eternal life has nothing to do with keeping the Law of Moses. It has everything to do with Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, who paid for our sin with his blood.

18You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.” 21The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
