SERVICIO DIVINO

DUODÉCIMO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—LOS QUE SE ENALTECEN SERÁN HUMILLADOS

Todos sabemos que la humildad es una cualidad positiva y el orgullo, una negativa. Entonces, ¿para qué molestarnos en hablar de lo que ya sabemos? Porque a pesar de saberlo, seguimos cayendo en la trampa del orgullo. Todos anhelamos aclamación, reconocimiento y alabanza. Las duras palabras de Jesús esta semana nos enseñan que buscar la exaltación de maneras fútiles y evasivas solo resultará en recibir lo contrario. Quienes intentan exaltarse a sí mismos finalmente serán humillados por Dios. En cambio, Jesús promete que quienes dejan su exaltación en manos de Dios recibirán honor y gloria mucho mayores que cualquier otra que se pueda otorgar en esta vida. Nuestra exaltación no tiene por qué ser nuestra responsabilidad, porque Jesús ya la ha hecho suya.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Salomón proporciona sentido común sobre la humildad y el orgullo.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Santiago 2:1–13

Santiago enseña que mostrar favoritismo hacia aquellos que pensamos que pueden brindarnos movilidad ascendente muestra una falta de misericordia y nos pone en riesgo del juicio de Dios.

2 Hermanos míos, la fe que tienen en nuestro glorioso Señor Jesucristo no debe dar lugar a favoritismos. 2 Supongamos que en el lugar donde se reúnen entra un hombre con anillo de oro y ropa elegante, y entra también un pobre desharrapado. 3 Si atienden bien al que lleva ropa elegante y le dicen: «Siéntese usted aquí, en este lugar cómodo», pero al pobre le dicen: «Quédate ahí de pie» o «Siéntate en el suelo, a mis pies», 4 ¿acaso no hacen discriminación entre ustedes, juzgando con malas intenciones?

5 Escuchen, mis queridos hermanos: ¿No ha escogido Dios a los que son pobres según el mundo para que sean ricos en la fe y hereden el reino que prometió a quienes lo aman? 6 ¡Pero ustedes han menospreciado al pobre! ¿No son los ricos quienes los explotan a ustedes y los arrastran ante los tribunales? 7 ¿No son ellos los que blasfeman el buen nombre de aquel a quien ustedes pertenecen?

8 Hacen muy bien si de veras cumplen la ley suprema de la Escritura: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo»; 9 pero si muestran algún favoritismo, pecan y son culpables, pues la misma ley los acusa de ser transgresores. 10 Porque el que cumple con toda la ley pero falla en un solo punto ya es culpable de haberla quebrantado toda. 11 Pues el que dijo: «No cometas adulterio», también dijo: «No mates.» Si no cometes adulterio, pero matas, ya has violado la ley.

12 Hablen y pórtense como quienes han de ser juzgados por la ley que nos da libertad, 13 porque habrá un juicio sin compasión para el que actúe sin compasión. ¡La compasión triunfa en el juicio!

EVANGELIO Lucas 14:1,7–14

Jesús enseña algunas maneras de demostrar humildad y promete que aquellos que se humillan serán exaltados.

Un día Jesús fue a comer a casa de un notable de los fariseos. Era sábado, así que éstos estaban acechando a Jesús.

7 Al notar cómo los invitados escogían los lugares de honor en la mesa, les contó esta parábola: 8 —Cuando alguien te invite a una fiesta de bodas, no te sientes en el lugar de honor, no sea que haya algún invitado más distinguido que tú. 9 Si es así, el que los invitó a los dos vendrá y te dirá: “Cédele tu asiento a este hombre.” Entonces, avergonzado, tendrás que ocupar el último asiento. 10 Más bien, cuando te inviten, siéntate en el último lugar, para que cuando venga el que te invitó, te diga: “Amigo, pasa más adelante a un lugar mejor.” Así recibirás honor en presencia de todos los demás invitados. 11 Todo el que a sí mismo se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.

12 También dijo Jesús al que lo había invitado: —Cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a tus vecinos ricos; no sea que ellos, a su vez, te inviten y así seas recompensado. 13 Más bien, cuando des un banquete, invita a los pobres, a los inválidos, a los cojos y a los ciegos. 14 Entonces serás dichoso, pues aunque ellos no tienen con qué recompensarte, serás recompensado en la resurrección de los justos.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—THOSE WHO EXALT THEMSELVES WILL BE HUMBLED

Everyone knows that humility is a positive trait and pride is a negative one. So, why bother talking about what we already know? Because in spite of that knowledge, we still helplessly fall into the trap of pride. We all desire acclaim, recognition, and praise. Jesus’ sharp words this week teach us that seeking exaltation in futile and fleeing ways will only result in receiving the opposite. Those who attempt to exalt themselves will eventually be humbled by God. In contrast, Jesus promises that those who leave their exaltation to God will receive honor and glory far greater than any that can be awarded in this life. Our exaltation does not need to be our responsibility, because Jesus has already made it his.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

SECOND READING James 2:1–13

James teaches that showing favoritism to those we think can provide us with upward mobility shows a lack of mercy and puts us at risk of God’s judgment.

1My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

5Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Jesus teaches some ways to demonstrate humility and promises that those who humble themselves will be exalted.

1One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.

7When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

12Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.
