SERVICIO DE LA PALABRA

DECIMOSÉPTIMO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—MAYOR FE AUMENTA EL DEBER

A medida que alguien asciende en el trabajo, suele haber beneficios: un salario más alto, más autoridad, mejores beneficios. Sin embargo, suele haber un aumento correspondiente en la responsabilidad: más horas, más reuniones, mayores expectativas. Así que, si a alguien le ofrecen un ascenso, podría preguntarse: "¿Vale la pena?". En el reino de Dios ocurre algo similar. A medida que nuestra fe crece, hay beneficios obvios: la tranquilidad de saber que eres un hijo redimido y amado de Dios, la paz de saber que tu eternidad está asegurada. Sin embargo, una mayor fe también aumenta el deber. Cada vez hay más oportunidades para servir. Esta semana, Jesús tiene palabras duras para quienes desean los beneficios del cristianismo, pero eluden esas responsabilidades. Sin embargo, para guiarnos a asumir esas responsabilidades, nuestro Salvador no nos amenaza ni nos persuade. Nos ayuda a ver que, si bien una mayor fe aumenta el deber, un mayor deber aumenta el deleite. El creyente sabe que sirve a Aquel que vino a servirnos primero. Así como el servicio de Cristo le trajo gran gozo, también lo hace nuestro servicio a los demás.

En la fe, el pueblo de Israel comprendió que toda su riqueza provenía del SEÑOR. Así que aceptaron con gozo el privilegio de donar generosamente para la construcción del templo del SEÑOR.

29 El rey David le dijo a toda la asamblea: «Dios ha escogido a mi hijo Salomón, pero para una obra de esta magnitud todavía le falta experiencia. El palacio no es para un hombre sino para Dios el SEÑOR. 2 Con mucho esfuerzo he hecho los preparativos para el templo de Dios. He conseguido oro para los objetos de oro, plata para los de plata, bronce para los de bronce, hierro para los de hierro, madera para los de madera, y piedras de ónice, piedras de engaste, piedras talladas de diversos colores, piedras preciosas de toda clase, y mármol en abundancia.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 2 Tesalonicenses 1:1–5,11-12

San Pablo da gracias a Dios por aumentar la fe de los tesalonicenses, permitiéndoles amarse mejor unos a otros y perseverar incluso durante la persecución.

Pablo, Silvano y Timoteo,

a la iglesia de los tesalonicenses, unida a Dios nuestro Padre y al Señor Jesucristo:

2 Que Dios el Padre y el Señor Jesucristo les concedan gracia y paz.

3 Hermanos, siempre debemos dar gracias a Dios por ustedes, como es justo, porque su fe se acrecienta cada vez más, y en cada uno de ustedes sigue abundando el amor hacia los otros. 4 Así que nos sentimos orgullosos de ustedes ante las iglesias de Dios por la perseverancia y la fe que muestran al soportar toda clase de persecuciones y sufrimientos.

5 Todo esto prueba que el juicio de Dios es justo, y por tanto él los considera dignos de su reino, por el cual están sufriendo.

17 Luego dijo Jesús a sus discípulos: —Los tropiezos son inevitables, pero ¡ay de aquel que los ocasiona! 2 Más le valdría ser arrojado al mar con una piedra de molino atada al cuello, que servir de tropiezo a uno solo de estos pequeños. 3 Así que, ¡cuídense!

»Si tu hermano peca, repréndelo; y si se arrepiente, perdónalo. 4 Aun si peca contra ti siete veces en un día, y siete veces regresa a decirte “Me arrepiento”, perdónalo.

5 Entonces los apóstoles le dijeron al Señor: —¡Aumenta nuestra fe!

6 —Si ustedes tuvieran una fe tan pequeña como un grano de mostaza—les respondió el Señor—, podrían decirle a este árbol: “Desarráigate y plántate en el mar”, y les obedecería.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Apostólico ~150 d.C.

Creo en Dios Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.

Y creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor; que fue concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo, nació de la virgen María, padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato, fue crucificado, murió, y fue sepultado; descendió al infierno; al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos, subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha, de Dios Padre Todopoderoso; y de allí vendrá de nuevo a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—INCREASED FAITH INCREASES DUTY

As someone rises through the ranks at work, there are typically benefits: higher salary, more authority, better benefits. However, there is often a corresponding increase in responsibility: longer hours, more meetings, raised expectations. So, if someone is offered a promotion, they might ask, “Is this worth it?” It is similar in God’s kingdom. As our faith grows, there are obvious benefits: the comfort of knowing you are a redeemed and loved child of God, the peace of knowing your eternity is secure. However, increased faith also increases duty. There are ever more opportunities for service. This week, Jesus has sharp words for those who want the benefits of being Christian but would shirk those responsibilities. However, to lead us to take up those responsibilities, our Savior doesn’t threaten or cajole. He helps us see that while increased faith increases duty, increased duty increases delight. The believer knows he serves the One who came to serve us first. Just as Christ’s service brought him great joy, so does our service to others.

Brothers and sisters, we confess our sins to God, our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ to forgive us.

Lord Jesus, grant us your forgiveness.

God, our heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We were born in sin and we keep on sinning.

We commit sins of thought, word and deed.

The good that we want to do, we do not do.

The evil that we do not want to do, this we keep on doing.

We repent of our sins that now weigh us down.

We beg you to have mercy on us.

Forgive us, Lord.

ABSOLUTION

God Almighty, our heavenly Father, has had mercy on us, and because of the perfect life, death, and resurrection of his beloved son, Jesus Christ, he has declared us not guilty.

The forgiveness of all our sins is ours.

In this forgiveness, we have the victory over death and eternal life in heaven with God. I declare to you what God has already done: You are forgiven.

Triune God, thank you for our salvation. Amen.

FIRST READING 1 Chronicles 29:1-2,10–18

In faith, the people of Israel understood that all their wealth came from the LORD. So, they joyfully embraced the privilege of donating generously to the construction of the LORD’s temple.

1Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. 2With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.

10David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,
the God of our father Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
11Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

5All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles' Creed ~150 AD

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
