SERVICIO DIVINO

DECIMOSEXTO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—LO QUE AYUDA EN LA VIDA FALLA EN LA MUERTE

¿Qué tienen en común John D. Rockefeller, el rey Salomón, Henry Ford y Joseph Stalin? Dos cosas. Primero, todos figuran en la lista de las veinte personas más ricas de la historia. En segundo lugar, todos se están pudriendo en el suelo. La realidad es que, si bien el dinero puede ayudar a alcanzar algunos objetivos, no previene la muerte. Por eso, Jesús pronuncia unas palabras duras esta semana, advirtiendo que quienes viven con corazones llenos de amor al dinero y vacíos de amor a Dios recibirán la única eternidad que el dinero puede comprar: una eternidad vacía de Dios y llena de tormento. El dinero parece útil, pero falla en la muerte. Por el contrario, lo que a menudo parece de poca ayuda en esta vida será nuestra única fuente de ayuda en la muerte. El mundo se burla de quienes dedican tiempo abundante a escuchar las palabras de Jesús y disfrutar de su santa cena. "¿De qué sirve esto?". Solo esto. Tales cosas nos permiten, al morir, recibir una recompensa que eclipsa incluso las mejores cosas que el dinero puede comprar.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Dios todopoderoso, nuestro Padre celestial, en su gran misericordia nos ha dado a su Hijo, y por medio de él nos perdona todos nuestros pecados. A los que creen en Jesucristo, Dios les conceda el poder de ser hijos e hijas suyos, y les concede su Espíritu Santo. Todos los que creen y son bautizados serán salvos. PRIMERA LECTURA Amós 6:1–7

En la época de Amós, los israelitas disfrutaban de prosperidad, pero espiritualmente se alejaban del Señor. El profeta advierte que no debemos permitir que la prosperidad nos dé una falsa sensación de seguridad.

¡Ay de los que viven tranquilos en Sión

y de los que viven confiados en el monte de Samaria!

¡Ay de los notables de la nación más importante,

a quienes acude el pueblo de Israel!

2 Pasen a Calné y obsérvenla;

vayan de allí a Jamat la grande,

bajen luego a Gat de los filisteos.

¿Acaso son ustedes superiores a estos reinos,

o es más grande su territorio que el de ustedes?

3 Ustedes creen alejar el día de la desgracia,

pero están acercando el imperio de la violencia.

4 Ustedes que se acuestan en camas incrustadas de marfil

y se arrellanan en divanes;

que comen corderos selectos

y terneros engordados;

      5 que, a la manera de David, improvisan canciones al son de la cítara
      e inventan instrumentos musicales;
      6 que beben vino en tazones
      y se perfuman con las esencias más finas
      sin afligirse por la ruina de José,
      7 marcharán a la cabeza de los desterrados,
      y así terminará el banquete de los holgazanes.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Hebreos 13:1–6

Toda virtud cristiana, incluyendo una actitud correcta hacia la riqueza, proviene de saber que el Señor es nuestra ayuda.

13 Sigan amándose unos a otros fraternalmente. 2 No se olviden de practicar la hospitalidad, pues gracias a ella algunos, sin saberlo, hospedaron ángeles. 3 Acuérdense de los presos, como si ustedes fueran sus compañeros de cárcel, y también de los que son maltratados, como si fueran ustedes mismos los que sufren.

4 Tengan todos en alta estima el matrimonio y la fidelidad conyugal, porque Dios juzgará a los adúlteros y a todos los que cometen inmoralidades sexuales. 5 Manténganse libres del amor al dinero, y conténtense con lo que tienen, porque Dios ha dicho:

«Nunca te dejaré;
jamás te abandonaré.»

6 Así que podemos decir con toda confianza:

«El Señor es quien me ayuda; no temeré.
¿Qué me puede hacer un simple mortal?»

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Lucas 16:19–31

Jesús cuenta una parábola sobre dos hombres: uno cuya confianza estaba en sus riquezas y el otro en su Dios.

19 »Había un hombre rico que se vestía lujosamente y daba espléndidos banquetes todos los días. 20 A la puerta de su casa se tendía un mendigo llamado Lázaro, que estaba cubierto de llagas 21 y que hubiera querido llenarse el estómago con lo que caía de la mesa del rico. Hasta los perros se acercaban y le lamían las llagas.

22 »Resulta que murió el mendigo, y los ángeles se lo llevaron para que estuviera al lado de Abraham. También murió el rico, y lo sepultaron. 23 En el infierno, en medio de sus tormentos, el rico levantó los ojos y vio de lejos a Abraham, y a Lázaro junto a él. 24 Así que alzó la voz y lo llamó: “Padre Abraham, ten compasión de mí y manda a Lázaro que moje la punta del dedo en agua y me refresque la lengua, porque estoy sufriendo mucho en este fuego.” 25 Pero Abraham le contestó: “Hijo, recuerda que durante tu vida te fue muy bien, mientras que a Lázaro le fue muy mal; pero ahora a él le toca recibir consuelo aquí, y a ti, sufrir terriblemente. 26 Además de eso, hay un gran abismo entre nosotros y ustedes, de modo que los que quieren pasar de aquí para allá no pueden, ni tampoco pueden los de allá para acá.”

27 »Él respondió: “Entonces te ruego, padre, que mandes a Lázaro a la casa de mi padre, 28 para que advierta a mis cinco hermanos y no vengan ellos también a este lugar de tormento.” 29 Pero Abraham le contestó: “Ya tienen a Moisés y a los profetas; ¡que les hagan caso a ellos!” 30 “No les harán caso, padre Abraham—replicó el rico—; en cambio, si se les presentara uno de entre los muertos, entonces sí se arrepentirían.” 31 Abraham le dijo: “Si no les hacen caso a Moisés y a los profetas, tampoco se convencerán aunque alguien se levante de entre los muertos.” »

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—WHAT HELPS IN LIFE FAILS IN DEATH

What do John D Rockefeller, King Solomon, Henry Ford, and Joseph Stalin all have in common? Two things. First, they are all in the list of the twenty wealthiest individuals who ever lived. Second, they are all rotting in the ground. The reality is that while money may help you achieve some objectives, it fails to prevent death. So Jesus speaks some sharp words this week, warning that those who live with hearts filled with love for money and void of love for God will receive the only eternity that money can buy—one void of God and filled with torment. Money seems helpful, but it fails in death. Conversely, what often seems of little help in this life will be our only source of help in death. The world scoffs at those who set aside plenteous time to listen to Jesus’ words and eat his holy meal. “Of what practical good are such things?” Only this. Such things enable us, at death, to receive a reward that dwarfs even the best things money can buy.

Let us pray to the Lord: Almighty God, You come into our hearts, you know our desires, you see our most intimate secrets; cleanse us by the Holy Spirit, so that we are able to love, worship, and glorify you as you deserve; we ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

FIRST READING Amos 6:1–7

At the time of Amos, the Israelites enjoyed prosperity, but spiritually they were drifting from the LORD. The prophet warns not to let prosperity provide a false sense of security.

1Woe to you who are complacent in Zion,
and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria,
you notable men of the foremost nation,
to whom the people of Israel come!
2Go to Kalneh and look at it;
go from there to great Hamath,
and then go down to Gath in Philistia.
Are they better off than your two kingdoms?
Is their land larger than yours?
3You put off the day of disaster
and bring near a reign of terror.
4You lie on beds adorned with ivory
and lounge on your couches.
You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.
5You strum away on your harps like David
and improvise on musical instruments.
6You drink wine by the bowlful
and use the finest lotions,
but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
7Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;
your feasting and lounging will end.

SECOND READING Hebrews 13:1–6

All Christian virtue—including a proper attitude toward wealth—comes from knowing the Lord is our help.

1Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. 2Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. 3Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.

4Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”

6So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”

This is the Word of God.

GOSPEL Luke 16:19–31

Jesus tells a parable about two men, one whose confidence was in his wealth, another whose confidence was in his God.

19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30“ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
