THE SERVICE

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER—HE LIVES TO GIVE ME PROOF AND PEACE

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to wonder whether anything he said was true. Thomas had been taught and trained by Christ himself. He heard Jesus predict his death and resurrection. Even after hearing the eyewitness testimony of friends, Thomas still had doubts about the resurrection of Jesus.

But he lives, and it makes a difference. Today I have great comfort as someone with doubts about Christ’s promises in my life. Jesus engages me with continuing assurances in Word and sacrament. I have proof. I have peace.

St. Peter points to the resurrection as proof of the hope we have.

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Jesus gave the proof that led to peace for Thomas.

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! 26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. INTRODUCCIÓN A LA ADORACIÓN

Ofrecemos un servicio en inglés con traducciones en español y karen para toda la familia en las comunidades de Walker’s Square y Walker's Point. En nuestro servicio nos reunimos delante de nuestro Dios todopoderoso para ofrecerle nuestra adoración y alabanza. También nos congregamos para escuchar la santa y poderosa Palabra de Dios y para celebrar sus sacramentos que dan la vida. Por estos medios, Dios fortalece nuestra fe y nos trae siempre más cerca a nuestro hogar eterno. Se invita a la congregación a cantar y hablar las partes del servicio impresas en negrita.

INFORMACIÓN Y NOTAS DEL SERVICIO

Baños—Hay un baño ubicado por la entrada de la iglesia. Los baños adicionales también se encuentran abajo.

Niños en el servicio—Animamos a todos nuestros niños a quedarse y participar con nosotros en el servicio. Sin embargo, si necesita un espacio tranquilo para su hijo, tenemos una habitación privada disponible por la entrada de la iglesia.

Sin la resurrección de Jesús, tendría que preguntarme si algo de lo que Él dijo era verdad. Tomás había sido enseñado y formado por Cristo mismo. Escuchó a Jesús predecir su muerte y su resurrección. Aun después de oír el testimonio de primera mano de sus amigos, Tomás todavía tenía dudas sobre la resurrección de Jesús.

Pero Él vive, y eso hace toda la diferencia. Hoy tengo gran consuelo como alguien que también tiene dudas acerca de las promesas de Cristo en mi vida. Jesús me encuentra con constantes seguridades en la Palabra y en los sacramentos. Tengo pruebas. Tengo paz.

Jesús dio la prueba que llevó a Tomás a la paz.

19 Al atardecer de aquel primer día de la semana, estando reunidos los discípulos a puerta cerrada por temor a los judíos, entró Jesús y, poniéndose en medio de ellos, los saludó. —¡La paz sea con ustedes! 20 Dicho esto, les mostró las manos y el costado. Al ver al Señor, los discípulos se alegraron. 21 —¡La paz sea con ustedes!—repitió Jesús—. CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.
