SERVICE OF THE WORD

THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

The Messiah is an important person. “Messiah” is the same word as “Christ” or “Anointed One.” He is someone who has been anticipated for a long time. Now we look at a time when his arrival is imminent! As we reach the midway point of Advent, we ask Christ to empower us to rejoice. We rejoice because God fulfills all his promises in Jesus.

CONFESSION OF SINS

We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

Amen.

We light two Advent candles remembering Jesus, who came in history. He came into a world of sin and death.

We remember Jesus, who came as the promised Messiah. John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

Hear our prayers, Lord Jesus Christ, and come with the good news of your mighty deliverance. Drive the darkness from our hearts, and fill us with your light; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READING Isaiah 35:1-10

Isaiah tells us that the coming of the Messiah would change everything.

1The desert and the parched land will be glad;
the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus, 2it will burst into bloom;
it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
they will see the glory of the Lord,
the splendor of our God.

3Strengthen the feeble hands,
steady the knees that give way;
4say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
he will come to save you.”

5Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
6Then will the lame leap like a deer,
and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
and streams in the desert.
7The burning sand will become a pool,
the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay,

SECOND READING James 5:7–11

James points to Job as an example of perseverance in the face of suffering.

7Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

John’s disciples wanted to verify that Jesus was the Messiah.

2When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

4Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written:

“ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’

11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles' Creed ~150 AD

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

      y entrarán en Sión con cantos de alegría,
      coronados de una alegría eterna.
      Los alcanzarán la alegría y el regocijo,
      y se alejarán la tristeza y el gemido.

SALMO DEL DÍA Salmo 146

1 ¡Aleluya! ¡Alabado sea el SEÑOR!
Alaba, alma mía, al SEÑOR.

      2 Alabaré al SEÑOR toda mi vida;
      mientras haya aliento en mí, cantaré salmos a mi Dios.
      3 No pongan su confianza en gente poderosa,
      en simples mortales, que no pueden salvar.
      4 Exhalan el espíritu y vuelven al polvo,
      y ese mismo día se desbaratan sus planes.
      5 Dichoso aquel cuya ayuda es el Dios de Jacob,
      cuya esperanza está en el SEÑOR su Dios,

      6 creador del cielo y de la tierra,
      del mar y de todo cuanto hay en ellos,
      y que siempre mantiene la verdad.
      7 El SEÑOR hace justicia a los oprimidos,
      da de comer a los hambrientos
      y pone en libertad a los cautivos.
      8 El SEÑOR da vista a los ciegos,
      el SEÑOR sostiene a los agobiados,
      el SEÑOR ama a los justos.
      9 El SEÑOR protege al extranjero
      y sostiene al huérfano y a la viuda,
      pero frustra los planes de los impíos.

10 ¡Oh Sión, que el SEÑOR reine para siempre!
¡Que tu Dios reine por todas las generaciones!

SEGUNDA LECTURA Santiago 5:7–11

Santiago señala a Job como un ejemplo de perseverancia frente al sufrimiento.

7 Por tanto, hermanos, tengan paciencia hasta la venida del Señor. Miren cómo espera el agricultor a que la tierra dé su precioso fruto y con qué paciencia aguarda las temporadas de lluvia. 8 Así también ustedes, manténganse firmes y aguarden con paciencia la venida del Señor, que ya se acerca. 9 No se quejen unos de otros, hermanos, para que no sean juzgados. ¡El juez ya está a la puerta!

10 Hermanos, tomen como ejemplo de sufrimiento y de paciencia a los profetas que hablaron en el nombre del Señor. 11 En verdad, consideramos dichosos a los que perseveraron. Ustedes han oído hablar de la perseverancia de Job, y han visto lo que al final le dio el Señor. Es que el Señor es muy compasivo y misericordioso.

Los discípulos de Juan querían comprobar que Jesús era el Mesías.

2 Juan estaba en la cárcel, y al enterarse de lo que Cristo estaba haciendo, envió a sus discípulos a que le preguntaran: 3 —¿Eres tú el que ha de venir, o debemos esperar a otro?

4 Les respondió Jesús: —Vayan y cuéntenle a Juan lo que están viendo y oyendo: 5 Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los que tienen lepra son sanados, los sordos oyen, los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncian las buenas nuevas. 6 Dichoso el que no tropieza por causa mía.

7 Mientras se iban los discípulos de Juan, Jesús comenzó a hablarle a la multitud acerca de Juan: «¿Qué salieron a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento? 8 Si no, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido con ropa fina? Claro que no, pues los que usan ropa de lujo están en los palacios de los reyes. 9 Entonces, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, les digo, y más que profeta. 10 Éste es de quien está escrito:

»“Yo estoy por enviar a mi mensajero delante de ti,
el cual preparará tu camino.”

11 Les aseguro que entre los mortales no se ha levantado nadie más grande que Juan el Bautista; sin embargo, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es más grande que él.

Éste es el Evangelio del Señor.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Apostólico ~150 d.C.

Creo en Dios Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.

Y creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor; que fue concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo, nació de la virgen María, padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato, fue crucificado, murió, y fue sepultado; descendió al infierno; al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos, subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha, de Dios Padre Todopoderoso; y de allí vendrá de nuevo a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

Creo en el Espíritu Santo, la santa iglesia cristiana, la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección del cuerpo, y la vida eterna. Amén.
