THE SERVICE

IMMINENT ARRIVAL OF THE JUDGE

The judge is an important person. You stand when he enters the courtroom. What he says must be obeyed. If you are the one on trial, his determinations make a big difference in how your life will continue.

You might be quite nervous if the judge is about to arrive. John invited people to turn their nervousness to repentance. He says that the arrival of the Judge is imminent, and the kingdom of heaven is near! You are invited to hear John, repent, and believe the good news of the coming Savior.

We light three Advent candles remembering Jesus, the Light of the world. He came to defeat the prince of darkness.

FIRST READING Isaiah 11:1–10

Isaiah gives the credentials of the one who would come to judge.

1A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.

SECOND READING Romans 15:4–13

God’s people face the coming judgment with hope, not fear.

4For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

5May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed 9and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. John prepared people for the arrival of the Judge by emphasizing the nearness of the kingdom of God.

1In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ”

4John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! 11“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. 11John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

13“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

14Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. EL SERVICIO

LLEGADA INMINENTE DEL JUEZ

El juez es una persona importante. Te pones de pie cuando él entra en la sala del tribunal. Lo que dice debe ser obedecido. Si eres tú quien está siendo juzgado, sus decisiones tendrán un gran impacto en el rumbo de tu vida.

Es posible que te sientas bastante nervioso si el juez está a punto de llegar. Juan invitó a la gente a convertir su nerviosismo en arrepentimiento. Dice que la llegada del Juez es inminente y que el reino de los cielos está cerca. Estás invitado a escuchar a Juan, arrepentirte y creer en las buenas nuevas del Salvador que viene.

Recordamos a Jesús, que vino en respuesta a las oraciones de su pueblo. Juan lo proclamó Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.

Escuchamos su llamado a ver la luz.

PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 11:1–10

Isaías presenta las credenciales de aquel que vendría a juzgar.

11 Del tronco de Isaí brotará un retoño;

un vástago nacerá de sus raíces.

2 El Espíritu del SEÑOR reposará sobre él:

espíritu de sabiduría y de entendimiento,

espíritu de consejo y de poder,

espíritu de conocimiento y de temor del SEÑOR.

3 Él se deleitará en el temor del SEÑOR;

no juzgará según las apariencias,

ni decidirá por lo que oiga decir,

4 sino que juzgará con justicia a los desvalidos,

y dará un fallo justo en favor de los pobres de la tierra.

Destruirá la tierra con la vara de su boca;

matará al malvado con el aliento de sus labios.

5 La justicia será el cinto de sus lomos

y la fidelidad el ceñidor de su cintura.

6 El lobo vivirá con el cordero,

el leopardo se echará con el cabrito,

A ti clamo, Señor,

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 15:4–13

El pueblo de Dios afronta el juicio venidero con esperanza, no con miedo.

4 De hecho, todo lo que se escribió en el pasado se escribió para enseñarnos, a fin de que, alentados por las Escrituras, perseveremos en mantener nuestra esperanza.

5 Que el Dios que infunde aliento y perseverancia les conceda vivir juntos en armonía, conforme al ejemplo de Cristo Jesús, 6 para que con un solo corazón y a una sola voz glorifiquen al Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

7 Por tanto, acéptense mutuamente, así como Cristo los aceptó a ustedes para gloria de Dios. 8 Les digo que Cristo se hizo servidor de los judíos para demostrar la fidelidad de Dios, a fin de confirmar las promesas hechas a los patriarcas, 9 y para que los gentiles glorifiquen a Dios por su compasión, como está escrito:

«Por eso te alabaré entre las naciones;
cantaré salmos a tu nombre.»

10 En otro pasaje dice:

«Alégrense, naciones, con el pueblo de Dios.»

11 Y en otra parte:

«¡Alaben al Señor, naciones todas!

12 A su vez, Isaías afirma:

      «Brotará la raíz de Isaí,

13 Que el Dios de la esperanza los llene de toda alegría y paz a ustedes que creen en él, para que rebosen de esperanza por el poder del Espíritu Santo.

Juan preparó a la gente para la llegada del Juez enfatizando la cercanía del reino de Dios.

3 En aquellos días se presentó Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea. 2 Decía: «Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca.» 3 Juan era aquel de quien había escrito el profeta Isaías:

«Voz de uno que grita en el desierto: “Preparen el camino para el Señor, háganle sendas derechas.” »

4 La ropa de Juan estaba hecha de pelo de camello. Llevaba puesto un cinturón de cuero y se alimentaba de langostas y miel silvestre. 5 Acudía a él la gente de Jerusalén, de toda Judea y de toda la región del Jordán. 6 Cuando confesaban sus pecados, él los bautizaba en el río Jordán.

7 Pero al ver que muchos fariseos y saduceos llegaban adonde él estaba bautizando, les advirtió: «¡Camada de víboras! ¿Quién les dijo que podrán escapar del castigo que se acerca? 8 Produzcan frutos que demuestren arrepentimiento. 9 No piensen que podrán alegar: “Tenemos a Abraham por padre.” Porque les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios es capaz de darle hijos a Abraham. 10 El hacha ya está puesta a la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no produzca buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego.

11 »Yo los bautizo a ustedes con agua para que se arrepientan. Pero el que viene después de mí es más poderoso que yo, y ni siquiera merezco llevarle las sandalias. Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. 12 Tiene el aventador en la mano y limpiará su era, recogiendo el trigo en su granero; la paja, en cambio, la quemará con fuego que nunca se apagará.»

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

SERMÓN Luke 3:7–18

7 A las multitudes que acudían para ser bautizadas, Juan les decía: «¡Generación de víboras! ¿Quién les enseñó a huir de la ira venidera? 8 Produzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comiencen a decirse: “Tenemos a Abrahán por padre”, porque yo les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios puede levantar hijos a Abrahán. 9 El hacha ya está lista para derribar de raíz a los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y echado en el fuego.»

10 La gente le preguntaba: «Entonces, ¿qué debemos hacer?»

11 Y Juan les respondía: «El que tenga dos túnicas, comparta una con el que no tiene ninguna, y el que tenga comida, haga lo mismo.»

12 También unos cobradores de impuestos llegaron para ser bautizados, y le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros?»

13 Él les dijo: «No cobren más de lo que deban cobrar.»

14 Unos soldados también le preguntaron: «Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer?»

Y Juan les respondió: «No extorsionen ni calumnien a nadie, y confórmense con su salario.»

15 Como el pueblo estaba expectante y todos se preguntaban si acaso Juan sería el Cristo, 16 Juan les dijo a todos: «A decir verdad, yo los bautizo en agua, pero después de mí viene uno que es más poderoso que yo, y de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de su calzado. Él los bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego. 17 Ya tiene el bieldo en la mano, de modo que limpiará su era; recogerá su trigo en el granero, y quemará la paja en un fuego que nunca se apagará.» 18 Con exhortaciones como éstas, y con muchas otras, anunciaba al pueblo estas buenas noticias.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.
