PENTECOST 5—SAY IT OUT LOUD—LOVE GOD ABOVE ALL

Not all love is good. It is self-destructive to love bad things. It is just as harmful to love good things in a bad order. For example, it would seem to be a good thing for a man to love his dog. But if he loves his dog more than he loves his wife, his “love” for both is disordered. For love to be healthy, it needs to be properly ordered.

Christians love the people whom God has placed into their lives. But when those people desire something that God does not desire, Christians love and serve God above all. Properly ordered love leads us to be faithful to God and his Word. We love God above all because he first loved us.

Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,
For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

When we hear Aaron’s excuses, we recognize our own rationalizations.

15Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. 16The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

17When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.”

18Moses replied:

“It is not the sound of victory,
it is not the sound of defeat;
it is the sound of singing that I hear.”

19When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. 20And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

21He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?”

22“Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil. 23They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ 24So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”

25Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies. 26So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him.

27Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’ ” 28The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles' Creed ~150 AD

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

No todo amor es bueno. Amar lo que es malo termina destruyéndonos. También es perjudicial amar cosas buenas en un orden equivocado. Por ejemplo, parecería algo bueno que un hombre ame a su perro. Pero si ama más a su perro que a su esposa, su “amor” por ambos está fuera de orden. Para que el amor sea sano, debe estar correctamente ordenado.

Los cristianos aman a las personas que Dios ha puesto en sus vidas. Pero cuando esas personas desean algo que Dios no desea, los cristianos aman y sirven a Dios por encima de todo. Un amor correctamente ordenado nos lleva a permanecer fieles a Dios y a su Palabra. Amamos a Dios sobre todas las cosas porque él nos amó primero.

Al escuchar las excusas de Aarón, reconocemos nuestras propias justificaciones.

15 Moisés volvió entonces del monte. Cuando bajó, traía en sus manos las dos tablas de la ley, las cuales estaban escritas por sus dos lados. 16 Tanto las tablas como la escritura grabada en ellas eran obra de Dios.

17 Cuando Josué oyó el ruido y los gritos del pueblo, le dijo a Moisés: —Se oyen en el campamento gritos de guerra.

18 Pero Moisés respondió:

      «Lo que escucho no son gritos de victoria,
      ni tampoco lamentos de derrota;
      más bien, lo que escucho son canciones.»

19 Cuando Moisés se acercó al campamento y vio el becerro y las danzas, ardió en ira y arrojó de sus manos las tablas de la ley, haciéndolas pedazos al pie del monte. 20 Tomó entonces el becerro que habían hecho, lo arrojó al fuego y, luego de machacarlo hasta hacerlo polvo, lo esparció en el agua y se la dio a beber a los israelitas. 21 A Aarón le dijo:

—¿Qué te hizo este pueblo? ¿Por qué lo has hecho cometer semejante pecado?

22 —Hermano mío, no te enojes—contestó Aarón—. Tú bien sabes cuán inclinado al mal es este pueblo. 23 Ellos me dijeron: “Tienes que hacernos dioses que marchen al frente de nosotros, porque a ese Moisés que nos sacó de Egipto, ¡no sabemos qué pudo haberle pasado!” 24 Yo les contesté que todo el que tuviera joyas de oro se desprendiera de ellas. Ellos me dieron el oro, yo lo eché al fuego, ¡y lo que salió fue este becerro!

25 Al ver Moisés que el pueblo estaba desenfrenado y que Aarón les había permitido desmandarse y convertirse en el hazmerreír de sus enemigos, 26 se puso a la entrada del campamento y dijo: «Todo el que esté de parte del SEÑOR, que se pase de mi lado.» Y se le unieron todos los levitas.

27 Entonces les dijo Moisés: «El SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, ordena lo siguiente: “Cíñase cada uno la espada y recorra todo el campamento de un extremo al otro, y mate al que se le ponga enfrente, sea hermano, amigo o vecino.” » 28 Los levitas hicieron lo que les mandó Moisés, y aquel día mataron como a tres mil israelitas. 29 Entonces dijo Moisés: «Hoy han recibido ustedes plena autoridad de parte del SEÑOR; él los ha bendecido este día, pues se pusieron en contra de sus propios hijos y hermanos.»

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 Timoteo 6:11–16

San Pablo describe la buena batalla de la fe.

11 Tú, en cambio, hombre de Dios, huye de todo eso, y esmérate en seguir la justicia, la piedad, la fe, el amor, la constancia y la humildad. 12 Pelea la buena batalla de la fe; haz tuya la vida eterna, a la que fuiste llamado y por la cual hiciste aquella admirable declaración de fe delante de muchos testigos. 13 Teniendo a Dios por testigo, el cual da vida a todas las cosas, y a Cristo Jesús, que dio su admirable testimonio delante de Poncio Pilato, te encargo 14 que guardes este mandato sin mancha ni reproche hasta la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, 15 la cual Dios a su debido tiempo hará que se cumpla. Al único y bendito Soberano, Rey de reyes y Señor de señores, 16 al único inmortal, que vive en luz inaccesible, a quien nadie ha visto ni puede ver, a él sea el honor y el poder eternamente. Amén.

      “al hombre contra su padre,
      a la hija contra su madre,
      a la nuera contra su suegra;
      36 los enemigos de cada cual serán los de su propia familia”.

37 »El que quiere a su padre o a su madre más que a mí no es digno de mí; el que quiere a su hijo o a su hija más que a mí no es digno de mí; 38 y el que no toma su cruz y me sigue no es digno de mí. 39 El que se aferre a su propia *vida, la perderá, y el que renuncie a su propia vida por mi causa, la encontrará.

40 »Quien los recibe a ustedes, me recibe a mí; y quien me recibe a mí, recibe al que me envió. 41 Cualquiera que recibe a un profeta por tratarse de un profeta, recibirá recompensa de profeta; y el que recibe a un justo por tratarse de un justo, recibirá recompensa de justo. 42 Y quien dé siquiera un vaso de agua fresca a uno de estos pequeños por tratarse de uno de mis discípulos, les aseguro que no perderá su recompensa.»

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Apostólico ~150 d.C.

Creo en Dios Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.

Y creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor; que fue concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo, nació de la virgen María, padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato, fue crucificado, murió, y fue sepultado; descendió al infierno; al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos, subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha, de Dios Padre Todopoderoso; y de allí vendrá de nuevo a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

Creo en el Espíritu Santo, la santa iglesia cristiana, la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección del cuerpo, y la vida eterna. Amén.
