MORNING PRAYER (MATINS)
SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT—EXACTLY WHAT I NEED: FAITH
I recognize that I need to be saved. When Jesus said, “No one can enter the kingdom of God,” that included me. I do not deserve God’s blessing. But long ago, God declared that I would be blessed by a descendant of Abraham who turned out to be Jesus. The blessing is salvation. I receive that salvation by faith in Jesus as my Savior. The good news is that faith is also God’s gift, imparted to me through the gospel.

in the lives of those who prove his faithfulness,

FIRST READING Genesis 12:1–8
The Lord gave Abram the gift of faith to believe the promise that one of his descendants would be a gift for the whole world.
1The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
2“I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
4So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.
6Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

SECOND READING Romans 4:1–5,13–17
Abraham is an example of how salvation is received as a gift through faith.
1What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? 2If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. 3What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
4Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.
13It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
16Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.

By sharing the good news of God’s love for the world, Jesus gave the gift of faith.
1Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
3Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
4“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
9“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
10“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Reconozco que necesito ser salvo. Cuando Jesús dijo: «Nadie puede entrar en el reino de Dios», eso me incluía a mí. No merezco la bendición de Dios. Pero hace mucho tiempo, Dios declaró que sería bendecido por un descendiente de Abraham que resultó ser Jesús. La bendición es la salvación. Recibo esa salvación por la fe en Jesús como mi Salvador. La buena noticia es que la fe también es un don de Dios, que me fue otorgado a través del evangelio.

PRIMERA LECTURA Génesis 12:1–8

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 4:1–5,13–17
Abraham es un ejemplo de cómo la salvación se recibe como regalo a través de la fe.
4:1 Entonces, ¿qué diremos en el caso de nuestro antepasado Abraham? 2 En realidad, si Abraham hubiera sido justificado por las obras, habría tenido de qué jactarse, pero no delante de Dios. 3 Pues ¿qué dice la Escritura? «Le creyó Abraham a Dios, y esto se le tomó en cuenta como justicia.»
4 Ahora bien, cuando alguien trabaja, no se le toma en cuenta el salario como un favor sino como una deuda. 5 Sin embargo, al que no trabaja, sino que cree en el que justifica al malvado, se le toma en cuenta la fe como justicia.
13 En efecto, no fue mediante la ley como Abraham y su descendencia recibieron la promesa de que él sería heredero del mundo, sino mediante la fe, la cual se le tomó en cuenta como justicia. 14 Porque si los que viven por la ley fueran los herederos, entonces la fe no tendría ya ningún valor y la promesa no serviría de nada. 15 La ley, en efecto, acarrea castigo. Pero donde no hay ley, tampoco hay transgresión.
16 Por eso la promesa viene por la fe, a fin de que por la gracia quede garantizada para toda la descendencia de Abraham; esta promesa no es sólo para los que son de la ley sino para los que son también de la fe de Abraham, quien es el padre que tenemos en común 17 delante de Dios, tal como está escrito: «Te he confirmado como padre de muchas naciones.» Así que Abraham creyó en el Dios que da vida a los muertos y que llama las cosas que no son como si ya existieran.
Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

Al compartir la buena noticia del amor de Dios por el mundo, Jesús dio el don de la fe.
3 Había entre los fariseos un dirigente de los judíos llamado Nicodemo. 2 Éste fue de noche a visitar a Jesús. —Rabí—le dijo—, sabemos que eres un maestro que ha venido de parte de Dios, porque nadie podría hacer las señales que tú haces si Dios no estuviera con él.
3 —De veras te aseguro que quien no nazca de nuevo no puede ver el reino de Dios—dijo Jesús.
4 —¿Cómo puede uno nacer de nuevo siendo ya viejo?—preguntó Nicodemo—. ¿Acaso puede entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre y volver a nacer?
5 —Yo te aseguro que quien no nazca de agua y del Espíritu, no puede entrar en el reino de Dios—respondió Jesús—. 6 Lo que nace del cuerpo es cuerpo; lo que nace del Espíritu es espíritu. 7 No te sorprendas de que te haya dicho: “Tienen que nacer de nuevo.” 8 El viento sopla por donde quiere, y lo oyes silbar, aunque ignoras de dónde viene y a dónde va. Lo mismo pasa con todo el que nace del Espíritu.
9 Nicodemo replicó: —¿Cómo es posible que esto suceda?
10 —Tú eres maestro de Israel, ¿y no entiendes estas cosas?—respondió Jesús—. 11 Te aseguro que hablamos de lo que sabemos y damos testimonio de lo que hemos visto personalmente, pero ustedes no aceptan nuestro testimonio. 12 Si les he hablado de las cosas terrenales, y no creen, ¿entonces cómo van a creer si les hablo de las celestiales? 13 Nadie ha subido jamás al cielo sino el que descendió del cielo, el Hijo del hombre. 14 »Como levantó Moisés la serpiente en el desierto, así también tiene que ser levantado el Hijo del hombre, 15 para que todo el que crea en él tenga vida eterna.
16 »Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo, que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo el que cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna. 17 Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él.
Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.
