THE SERVICE

THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT—EXACTLY WHAT I NEEED: WATER

I recognize my deep spiritual thirst. I long for a good relationship with God and for everlasting life. I am tempted to satisfy that deep thirst with worldly things, a strategy doomed to failure. I realize that my thirst is satisfied only by the one who said, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” Jesus meets my greatest need.

In his grace, God gives undeserving people water from a stone.

1The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”

3But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”

4Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

5The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

God’s love is poured into my heart like living water.

And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus calls a Samaritan woman to faith, providing living water for her thirsty soul.

5So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

10Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

11“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

15The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17“I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

TERCER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA—EXACTAMENTE LO QUE NECESITO: AGUA

Reconozco mi profunda sed espiritual. Anhelo una buena relación con Dios y la vida eterna. Me siento tentado a saciar esa profunda sed con cosas mundanas, una estrategia condenada al fracaso. Me doy cuenta de que mi sed solo la satisface aquel que dijo: «El que beba del agua que yo le daré, no tendrá sed jamás». Jesús satisface mi mayor necesidad.

1 Venid al monte santo del Calvario,
pecadores, arruinados por la caída;
aquí una fuente pura y sanadora

PRIMERA LECTURA Éxodo 17:1–7

En su gracia, Dios da a personas que no lo merecen agua de una piedra.

17 Toda la comunidad israelita partió del desierto de Sin por etapas, según lo había ordenado el SEÑOR. Acamparon en Refidín, pero no había allí agua para que bebieran, 2 así que altercaron con Moisés. —Danos agua para beber—le exigieron.

—¿Por qué pelean conmigo?—se defendió Moisés—. ¿Por qué provocan al SEÑOR?

3 Pero los israelitas estaban sedientos, y murmuraron contra Moisés. —¿Para qué nos sacaste de Egipto?—reclamaban—. ¿Sólo para matarnos de sed a nosotros, a nuestros hijos y a nuestro ganado?

4 Clamó entonces Moisés al SEÑOR, y le dijo: —¿Qué voy a hacer con este pueblo? ¡Sólo falta que me maten a pedradas!

5 —Adelántate al pueblo—le aconsejó el SEÑOR—y llévate contigo a algunos ancianos de Israel, pero lleva también la vara con que golpeaste el Nilo. Ponte en marcha, 6 que yo estaré esperándote junto a la roca que está en Horeb. Aséstale un golpe a la roca, y de ella brotará agua para que beba el pueblo. Así lo hizo Moisés, a la vista de los ancianos de Israel. 7 Además, a ese lugar lo llamó Masá, y también Meribá, porque los israelitas habían altercado con él y provocado al SEÑOR al decir: «¿Está o no está el SEÑOR entre nosotros?»

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SALMO DEL DÍA Salmo 95

1 Vengan, cantemos con júbilo al SEÑOR;
      aclamemos a la roca de nuestra salvación.
      2 Lleguemos ante él con acción de gracias,
      aclamémoslo con cánticos.

      3 Porque el SEÑOR es el gran Dios,
      el gran Rey sobre todos los dioses.
      4 En sus manos están los abismos de la tierra;
      suyas son las cumbres de los montes.
      5 Suyo es el mar, porque él lo hizo;
      con sus manos formó la tierra firme.

      6 Vengan, postrémonos reverentes,

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 5:1–8

El amor de Dios se derrama en mi corazón como agua viva.

5 En consecuencia, ya que hemos sido justificados mediante la fe, tenemos paz con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 2 También por medio de él, y mediante la fe, tenemos acceso a esta gracia en la cual nos mantenemos firmes. Así que nos regocijamos en la esperanza de alcanzar la gloria de Dios. 3 Y no sólo en esto, sino también en nuestros sufrimientos, porque sabemos que el sufrimiento produce perseverancia; 4 la perseverancia, entereza de carácter; la entereza de carácter, esperanza. 5 Y esta esperanza no nos defrauda, porque Dios ha derramado su amor en nuestro corazón por el Espíritu Santo que nos ha dado.

6 A la verdad, como éramos incapaces de salvarnos, en el tiempo señalado Cristo murió por los malvados. 7 Difícilmente habrá quien muera por un justo, aunque tal vez haya quien se atreva a morir por una persona buena. 8 Pero Dios demuestra su amor por nosotros en esto: en que cuando todavía éramos pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

Jesús llama a una mujer samaritana a la fe, proveyendo agua viva para su alma sedienta.

5 llegó a un pueblo samaritano llamado Sicar, cerca del terreno que Jacob le había dado a su hijo José. 6 Allí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, fatigado del camino, se sentó junto al pozo. Era cerca del mediodía.

7–8 Sus discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar comida. En eso llegó a sacar agua una mujer de Samaria, y Jesús le dijo: —Dame un poco de agua.

9 Pero como los judíos no usan nada en común con los samaritanos, la mujer le respondió: —¿Cómo se te ocurre pedirme agua, si tú eres judío y yo soy samaritana?

10 —Si supieras lo que Dios puede dar, y conocieras al que te está pidiendo agua—contestó Jesús—, tú le habrías pedido a él, y él te habría dado agua que da vida.

11 —Señor, ni siquiera tienes con qué sacar agua, y el pozo es muy hondo; ¿de dónde, pues, vas a sacar esa agua que da vida 12 ¿Acaso eres tú superior a nuestro padre Jacob, que nos dejó este pozo, del cual bebieron él, sus hijos y su ganado?

13 —Todo el que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed—respondió Jesús—, 14 pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré, no volverá a tener sed jamás, sino que dentro de él esa agua se convertirá en un manantial del que brotará vida eterna.

15 —Señor, dame de esa agua para que no vuelva a tener sed ni siga viniendo aquí a sacarla.

16 —Ve a llamar a tu esposo, y vuelve acá—le dijo Jesús.

17 —No tengo esposo—respondió la mujer.

—Bien has dicho que no tienes esposo. 18 Es cierto que has tenido cinco, y el que ahora tienes no es tu esposo. En esto has dicho la verdad.

19 —Señor, me doy cuenta de que tú eres profeta. 20 Nuestros antepasados adoraron en este monte, pero ustedes los judíos dicen que el lugar donde debemos adorar está en Jerusalén.

21 —Créeme, mujer, que se acerca la hora en que ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén adorarán ustedes al Padre. 22 Ahora ustedes adoran lo que no conocen; nosotros adoramos lo que conocemos, porque la salvación proviene de los judíos. 23 Pero se acerca la hora, y ha llegado ya, en que los verdaderos adoradores rendirán culto al Padre en espíritu y en verdad, porque así quiere el Padre que sean los que le adoren. 24 Dios es espíritu, y quienes lo adoran deben hacerlo en espíritu y en verdad.

25 —Sé que viene el Mesías, al que llaman el Cristo—respondió la mujer—. Cuando él venga nos explicará todas las cosas.

26 —Ése soy yo, el que habla contigo—le dijo Jesús.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Y creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida, que procede del Padre y del Hijo, que con el Padre y el Hijo recibe una misma adoración y gloria, que habló por los profetas.
