November 1, 2026 - All Saints' Day

THE SERVICE

THE BEGINNING OF THE END – IT’S TIME TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

Childbearing is excruciating. Yet each day countless women willingly become pregnant. They know that pain can be endured if it is temporary, with happier times coming immediately after. Likewise, the time between Christ’s first and second coming is full of hardship, especially for believers. How do we bear it? We remember that it is temporary. Happier times are coming!

That truth is crystal clear on All Saints’ Day. On this day we remember every saint who has gone before us. We have in mind all those who had faith in Jesus, both the heroes of faith in Scripture and all faithful Christian family members. They all endured hardship and pain. But no more. Now they enjoy perfect glory, peace, and joy. It’s the beginning of the end, and we endure by remembering all the saints, focusing on the future glory that awaits us.

OPENING HYMN                                                        885 There Is a Higher Throne

1       There is a higher throne
than all this world has known,
    where faithful ones from ev’ry tongue
    will one day come.
Before the Son we’ll stand,
made faultless through the Lamb;
    believing hearts find promised grace;
    salvation comes. (Refrain)

Ref  Hear heaven’s voices sing;
their thund’rous anthem rings
    through em’rald courts and sapphire skies;
    their praises rise.
All glory, wisdom, pow’r,
strength, thanks, and honor are
    to God our King who reigns on high
    forevermore.

2      And there we’ll find our home,
our life before the throne;
    we’ll honor him in perfect song
    where we belong.
He’ll wipe each tear-stained eye
as thirst and hunger die;
    the Lamb becomes our Shepherd-King;
    we’ll reign with him. (Refrain)

INVOCATION                                                                                    154 Setting One

In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just
    and will forgive us our sins
    and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father,
    I am sinful by nature
        and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions.
    I have not loved you with my whole heart;
    I have not loved others as I should.
        I deserve your punishment both now and forever.
    But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins
        with his innocent suffering and death.
    Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Silence for meditation and reflection

Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

HYMN                                                                                     568 His Robes for Mine

1       His robes for mine: O wonderful exchange!
Clothed in my sin, Christ suffered ’neath God’s rage.
Draped in his righteousness, I’m justified.
In Christ I live, for in my place he died. (Refrain)

Ref  I cling to Christ, and marvel at the cost:
Jesus forsaken, God estranged from God.
Bought by such love, my life is not my own.
My praise—my all—shall be for Christ alone.

2      His robes for mine: what cause have I for dread?
God’s daunting law Christ mastered in my stead.
Faultless I stand with righteous works not mine,
saved by my Lord’s vicarious death and life. (Refrain)

3      His robes for mine: God’s justice is appeased.
Jesus is crushed, and thus the Father’s pleased.
Christ drank God’s wrath on sin, then cried, “’Tis done!”
Sin’s wage is paid, propitiation won. (Refrain)

4      His robes for mine: such anguish none can know.
Christ, God’s beloved, condemned as though his foe.
He, as though I, accursed and left alone;
I, as though he, embraced and welcomed home! (Refrain)

And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have knit your people together into one holy Church, the body of Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow the example of your blessed saints in lives of faith and willing service and with them at last inherit the inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READING                                                                            Revelation 7:9–17

St. John’s vision lets us see all the saints in heaven as a picture of our own future.

    9After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,
who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb.”

11All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying:

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”

    13Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

    14I answered, “Sir, you know.”

    And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne
    will shelter them with his presence.
16‘Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat down on them,’
    nor any scorching heat.
17For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’
    ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM OF THE DAY                                                                               Psalm 149

1Praise the Lord.

Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.

2Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
    let the people of Zion be glad in their King.
3Let them praise his name with dancing
    and make music to him with timbrel and harp.
4For the Lord takes delight in his people;
    he crowns the humble with victory.
5Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor
    and sing for joy on their beds.

6May the praise of God be in their mouths
    and a double-edged sword in their hands,
7to inflict vengeance on the nations
    and punishment on the peoples,
8to bind their kings with fetters,
    their nobles with shackles of iron,
9to carry out the sentence written against them—
    this is the glory of all his faithful people.

Praise the Lord.

SECOND READING                                                                               1 John 3:1–3

In love, God adopted us as his children, making us heirs of future glory.

    1See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL                                                          (in English and Karen) Matthew 5:1–12

Sorrow, hardship, and persecution are temporary. Eternal blessings are on the way.

    1Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them. He said:

3“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
     for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn,
     for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek,
     for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
     for they will be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful,
     for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart,
     for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers,
     for they will be called children of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
     for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

    11“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ!

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE

HYMN OF THE DAY                                                              880 For All the Saints

1       For all the saints who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

2      Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

3      Oh, may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold
fight as the saints who nobly fought of old
and win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

4      Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

5      And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph-song,
and hearts are brave again and arms are strong.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

6      The golden evening brightens in the west;
soon, soon, to faithful warriors cometh rest;
sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

7      But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day:
the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
the King of glory passes on his way.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

8      From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

SERMON

CONFESSION OF FAITH                                              Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERING PRESENTED BEFORE THE ALTAR

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Living God, you have called and gathered your church by the work of your Holy Spirit, and you gather your saints by calling them from this world to yourself.

We sing a new song to you, Lord, your praise in the assembly of your saints.

We give thanks for those who have gone before us, who lived their lives in faith and shared with us your gospel promise.

We sing a new song to you, Lord, your praise in the assembly of your saints.

We give thanks for the many blessings you give us, even as we bear your cross. Continue to bless and strengthen us until we receive your reward in heaven by your grace.

We sing a new song to you, Lord, your praise in the assembly of your saints.

We give thanks for the hope that you give us, that those who die with faith in Christ are not lost, but are brought through death to eternal life in your presence.

We sing a new song to you, Lord, your praise in the assembly of your saints.

We give thanks for your only Son, Jesus Christ, who worked our salvation and has prepared a place for us in your house, that we may dwell with you forever.

We sing a new song to you, Lord, your praise in the assembly of your saints.

Your holy Word promises in that Day of your salvation you will wipe away every tear from our eyes. Hear the cries of those who are hurting now, who struggle with sickness, pain, or distress, [especially…]. Refresh them with the living water of your Word, and shelter them with your presence.

We sing a new song to you, Lord, your praise in the assembly of your saints.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

Listen, Lord, to the thoughts and cares of our hearts.

Silent prayer.

Lord, your glory shines forth in the lives of your faithful servants, and you bring an end to all our troubles when you call us home to you. Fill us with hope as we wait for you, and bring us with all your saints to glory everlasting; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

PRAYER

If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
1 Corinthians 15:19-20

With hope in Christ and in the resurrection to eternal life, we remember those in this congregation who have died in the last year:

The names of those who have died in the last year are read.

We remember in silence those who have died in previous years, and those who were members of other Christian congregations:

Silence.

For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.
Yes, they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them. Revelation 14:13

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus Christ, you told Mary and Martha that you are the Resurrection and the Life. You promised your disciples that you would prepare a place for them. You promised the repentant thief that he would be with you in Paradise. And through the disciple John, you revealed to us that you will wipe away every tear from our eyes in the Day when there is no death or sorrow or crying or pain. Fill our hearts with these firm and certain promises. Comfort us with the assurance that those who have died in faith now see you face to face. You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a great multitude that no one can count, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who in blessing his saints of the past has given us assurance and hope that, following their example, we may run the race marked out for us and receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

SANCTUS

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts:
heav’n and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

We give thanks to you, O God, through your dear Son, Jesus Christ, whom you sent to be our Savior, our Redeemer, and the messenger of your grace. Through him you made all things; in him you are well pleased. He is the incarnate Word, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. To fulfill your promises, he stretched out his hands on the cross and released from eternal death all who believe in you.

As we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection, we thank you that you have gathered us together to receive your Son’s body and blood. Send us your Spirit, unite us as one, and strengthen our faith so that we may praise you in your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, we glorify and honor you, O God our Father, with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my T body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my T blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
Amen.

AGNUS DEI

O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us.

O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;

Santo Dios, Padre misericordioso,
    Por naturaleza soy pecador,
        y he pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra.
    No te he amado con todo mi corazón;
    No he amado a otros como debo.
        Merezco tu castigo tanto ahora como por la eternidad.
    Pero Jesús, mi Salvador, ha pagado por mis pecados
        con su sufrimiento inocente y muerte en la cruz.
    Confiando en él, oro: Dios, ten misericordia de mi, un pecador.

Con Su justicia Cristo me vistió;
En mi pecado-envuelto Él sufrió.
En Cristo vivo; Él por mí murió. (Estribillo)

10 Gritaban a gran voz:

y día y noche le sirven en su templo;
y los guiará a fuentes de agua viva;

1 ¡Aleluya! ¡Alabado sea el Señor!

Canten al Señor un cántico nuevo,
alábenlo en la comunidad de los fieles.

2 Que se alegre Israel por su creador;
3 Que alaben su nombre con danzas;
4 Porque el Señor se complace en su pueblo;
5 Que se alegren los fieles por su triunfo;

y castiguen a los pueblos;
a sus nobles con grilletes de hierro;

Tu nombre,-¡oh, Cristo!, hemos de-alabar.
    ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

2      Tú fuiste-amparo, roca-y defensor;
En la batalla, recio capitán;
Tu luz venció las sombras del temor.
    ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

3      Que, como-ayer, podamos hoy luchar,
Valientes, firmes, fieles hasta-el fin:
Corona de-oro Tú nos ceñirás.
    ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

4      ¡Oh, bendecida-y santa comunión!
De los que-aún luchan o-en la gloria-están;
Un solo cuerpo, porque tuyos son.
    ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

5      Y cuando ruda la batalla es,
Del cielo se-oye-un cántico triunfal;
Se-afirma-el brazo, vence-al fin la fe:
    ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

6      La-aurora-eterna ya despuntará;
Las huestes fieles llegarán al Rey,
Cantando-alegres a la Trinidad:
    ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

SERMÓN

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE                                            El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

SANCTUS

Santo, santo, santo, Dios del universo;

HIMNO DE CLAUSURA       884 S Lord, When Your Glory I Shall See (traducido)

        Señor, cuando vea tu gloria
    y pruebe la delicia de tu reino,
¡Tu sangre será mi manto real,
    Mi gozo sin medida!
Cuando comparezca ante tu trono,
Tu justicia será mi corona;
    Con estos no necesito esconderme.
Y allí, con ropas ricamente labradas,
Como tu propia novia seré llevado
    Para estar en alegría a tu lado.
