SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT
THE BEGINNING OF THE END – IT’S TIME TO STAY STEADFAST
Jesus told his followers, “You will be hated by everyone because of me” (Matthew 10:22). So, the time between Christ’s first and second coming is going to be perilous for believers. A good example: Martin Luther. All that priest wanted was to share the pure gospel with the world. For trying to do just that, both political and religious leaders wanted to end his life. The Festival of the Reformation emphasizes our unfailing reliance on the Word of God. We give unflinching testimony to that Word even in the face of persecution. Today we pray that the Lord would keep us steadfast in the faith.
OPENING HYMN 510 In Christ Alone
1 In Christ alone my hope is found;
he is my light, my strength, my song;
this cornerstone, this solid ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all;
here in the love of Christ I stand.
2 In Christ alone, who took on flesh,
fullness of God in helpless babe;
this gift of love and righteousness,
scorned by the ones he came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
the wrath of God was satisfied;
for ev’ry sin on him was laid;
here in the death of Christ I live.
3 There in the ground his body lay,
light of the world by darkness slain;
then bursting forth in glorious day,
up from the grave he rose again!
And as he stands in victory,
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
for I am his and he is mine,
bought with the precious blood of Christ.
4 No guilt in life, no fear in death,
this is the pow’r of Christ in me;
from life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man
can ever pluck me from his hand;
till he returns or calls me home,
here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

INVOCATION
The grace of our Lord T Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
And also with you.
CONFESSION OF SINS CW93 p26
God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.
Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son T and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
PRAYER AND PRAISE CW93 p27 Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie)
For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.
Christ, have mercy.
For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in your tender care:
Amen.
The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise.
SONG OF PRAISE 640 God’s Word Is Our Great Heritage
God’s Word is our great heritage
and shall be ours forever;
to spread its light from age to age
shall be our chief endeavor.
Through life it guides our way,
in death it is our stay.
Lord, grant, while worlds endure,
we keep its teachings pure
throughout all generations.

THE WORD
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.
Gracious Lord, our refuge and strength, pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort them in all temptations, defend them against all their enemies, and bestow on the church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

FIRST READING Daniel 6:10–12,16–23
Even though it potentially meant death by lion, Daniel demonstrated steadfast faith and prayed to the Lord.
10Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”
16So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”
17A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep. 19At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”
21Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! 22My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
23The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 46
1God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
11The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
SECOND READING Romans 3:19–28
God justifies those who have been given the gift of steadfast faith in Jesus.
19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
21But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

GOSPEL (in English and Karen) Matthew 10:16–23
The Lord keeps us steadfast and faithful through times of persecution.
16“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. 18On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 23When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE
HYMN OF THE DAY 863 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
1 A mighty fortress is our God,
a trusty shield and weapon;
he helps us free from ev’ry need
that has us now o’ertaken.
The old evil foe
now means deadly woe;
deep guile and great might
are his dread arms in fight;
on earth is not his equal.
2 With might of ours can naught be done,
soon were our loss effected;
but for us fights the valiant one
whom God himself elected.
You ask, “Who is this?”
Jesus Christ it is,
the almighty Lord,
and there’s no other God;
he holds the field forever.
3 Though devils all the world should fill,
all eager to devour us,
we tremble not, we fear no ill;
they shall not overpow’r us.
This world’s prince may still
scowl fierce as he will,
he can harm us none.
He’s judged; the deed is done;
one little word can fell him.
4 The Word they still shall let remain
nor any thanks have for it;
he’s by our side upon the plain
with his good gifts and Spirit.
And take they our life,
goods, fame, child, and wife,
though all may be gone,
our victory is won;
the kingdom’s ours forever!

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Gracious Redeemer, reveal to us the depth of your wisdom through your Word, that we may remain in the true faith and rely on your grace alone.
Lord of hosts, you are our refuge and our fortress. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word.
Let your gospel have free course in the world. Call people by your gospel, enlighten them with your gifts, sanctify and keep them with you in the one true faith.
Lord of hosts, you are our refuge and our fortress. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word.
With your holy Word give strength and faithfulness to the president of our synod, the presidents of its districts and all our circuit pastors. May they lead your congregations to be steadfast in your Word and focused on your eternal mission.
Lord of hosts, you are our refuge and our fortress. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word.
Let your Word dwell in us richly as we teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, expressing our praise and thanks to you.
Lord of hosts, you are our refuge and our fortress. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word.
Your Word tells us that you are our refuge, our fortress, a gladdening stream and a calming voice. Give refuge, protection, joy and peace to your people who suffer with pain, illness and distress, [especially…]. Do not let them fall, but help them soon, according to your gracious will.
Lord of hosts, you are our refuge and our fortress. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word.
Special prayers and intercessions may follow.
Listen, Lord, to the thoughts and cares of our hearts.
Silent prayer.
Lord of the Church, you have promised to richly reward all Christians who help in the ministry of the Word. Bless all faithful preachers, give them patience in their work and hold back everything that would hinder the course of your Word; you live and reign, now and forever. Amen.

DISTRIBUTION HYMN 855 The Church’s One Foundation sts. 1–5
1 The Church’s one foundation
is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
she is his new creation
by water and the Word.
From heav’n he came and sought her
to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her,
and for her life he died
2 Elect from ev’ry nation,
yet one o’er all the earth;
her charter of salvation:
one Lord, one faith, one birth.
One holy name she blesses,
partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses,
with ev’ry grace endued.
3 The Church shall never perish.
Her dear Lord, to defend,
to guide, sustain, and cherish,
is with her to the end.
Tho’ there be those that hate her
and strive to see her fail,
against both foe and traitor
she ever shall prevail.
4 Tho’ with a scornful wonder
the world sees her oppressed,
by schisms rent asunder,
by heresies distressed,
yet saints their watch are keeping;
their cry goes up, “How long?”
and soon the night of weeping
shall be the morn of song.
5 Mid toil and tribulation
and tumult of her war
she waits the consummation
of peace forevermore
till with the vision glorious
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great Church victorious
shall be the Church at rest.

ORACIÓN Y ALABANZA Dios, Ten Misericordia (El Kirie)

Gracious Lord, our refuge and strength, pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. PRIMERA LECTURA Daniel 6:10–12,16–23
¡Tampoco he cometido nada malo contra Su Majestad!
y las montañas se hundan en el fondo del mar;
3 aunque rujan y se encrespen sus aguas,
y ante su furia retiemblen los montes. Selah
5 Dios está en ella, la ciudad no caerá;
6 Se agitan las naciones, se tambalean los reinos;
7 El Señor Todopoderoso está con nosotros;
nuestro refugio es el Dios de Jacob. Selah
8 Vengan y vean los portentos del Señor;
él ha traído desolación sobre la tierra.
9 Ha puesto fin a las guerras
en todos los confines de la tierra;
11 El Señor Todopoderoso está con nosotros;
nuestro refugio es el Dios de Jacob. Selah
SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 3:19–28

Defensa-y buen escudo;
Con su poder nos librará
En este trance-agudo.
Con furia-y con afán
Acósanos Satán;
Por armas deja ver
Astucia-y gran poder:
Cual él no hay-en la tierra.
2 Nuestro valor es nada-aquí,
Con él todo-es perdido;
Mas por nosotros pugnará
De Dios el escogido.
¿Sabéis quién es? Jesús,
El que venció-en la cruz,
Señor de Sabaot,
Y pues Él sólo-es Dios,
Él triunfa-en la batalla.
3 Aún si-están demonios mil
Prontos a devorarnos,
No temeremos porque Dios
Sabrá aún prosperarnos.
Que muestre su vigor
Satán, y su furor
Dañarnos no podrá;
Pues condenado-es ya
Por la Palabra Santa.
4 Sin destruirla dejarán,
Aún mal de su grado,
Esta Palabra del Señor,
Él lucha-a nuestro lado.
Que lleven con furor
Los bienes, vida,-honor,
La casa, o-el hogar...
Todo ha de perecer:
De Dios el reino queda.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

HIMNO DE LA DISTRIBUCIÓN 855 S HL810 Un solo fundamento
1 Un solo fundamento
y sólo-un fundador,
La santa-iglesia tiene
en Cristo, su Señor.
Haciéndola su-esposa,
del cielo descendió,
Y por su propia sangre
su libertad compró.
2 Aunque-es de muchas razas
disfruta de-unidad:
Sólo-una fe confiesa
en santa caridad;
Es uno su bautismo,
un pan de santidad;
Por gracia siempre-espera
una felicidad.
3 El mundo la contempla
pasmado-y con desdén:
De cismas desgarrada,
de-error y por vaivén.
Mas santos de vigilia
no cesan en su-orar,
Y pronto por la noche
oirán gozo-y cantar.
4 Cercada de tumultos,
de guerra-y confusión,
La paz eterna-espera,
serena-en su visión;
Al fin, ya victoriosa,
la-iglesia terrenal
Recibe por su premio
descanso celestial.
5 Mas ella-aquí disfruta
celeste comunión
Con Dios y con los santos
en paz y perfección,
Jesús, cabeza nuestra,
concédenos lugar
Con los que-habitan siempre
en tu celeste-hogar.
