THE SERVICE

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—GRACE IS AMAZING

Give a single bag of M&Ms to siblings in middle school and tell them to share. You will witness counting done with accounting-like precision. Each child will get an equal amount of candy because that is fair. That’s what’s expected! Human beings have an incredibly strong sense of fairness.

That is why it can be so amazing when we see how God unexpectedly dispenses blessing and grace. The prophet Jonah was perplexed when he saw God’s mercy on a nation that was an enemy to Jonah’s people. Like Jonah, we need to stop expecting God to be fair. He does not give us what we deserve. Instead, in his grace, he shows us mercy. That’s amazing!

Jonah is perplexed by the amazing grace of God.

10When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

1But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

4But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

5Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

9But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”

“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”

10But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

God shows mercy and grace to those he chooses.

6It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 8In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. 9For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. EL SERVICIO

DÉCIMO SÉPTIMO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—LA GRACIA ES MARAVILLOSA

Dale una sola bolsa de M&Ms a unos hermanos que estén en la escuela secundaria y diles que la compartan. Presenciarás un conteo realizado con una precisión propia de la contabilidad. Cada niño recibirá la misma cantidad, porque eso es lo justo. ¡Es lo que se espera! Los seres humanos poseemos un sentido de la justicia increíblemente fuerte.

Por eso resulta tan asombroso ver cómo Dios reparte bendiciones y gracia de manera inesperada. El profeta Jonás quedó desconcertado al ver la misericordia de Dios hacia una nación que era enemiga de su propio pueblo. Al igual que Jonás, debemos dejar de esperar que Dios sea justo. Él no nos da lo que merecemos; en cambio, en su gracia, nos muestra misericordia. ¡Eso es maravilloso!

PRIMERA LECTURA Jonás 3:10—4:11

Jonás está perplejo ante la gracia asombrosa de Dios.

10 Al ver Dios lo que hicieron, es decir, que se habían convertido de su mal camino, cambió de parecer y no llevó a cabo la destrucción que les había anunciado.

4 Pero esto disgustó mucho a Jonás, y lo hizo enfurecerse. 2 Así que oró al SEÑOR de esta manera: —¡Oh SEÑOR! ¿No era esto lo que yo decía cuando todavía estaba en mi tierra? Por eso me anticipé a huir a Tarsis, pues bien sabía que tú eres un Dios bondadoso y compasivo, lento para la ira y lleno de amor, que cambias de parecer y no destruyes. 3 Así que ahora, SEÑOR, te suplico que me quites la vida. ¡Prefiero morir que seguir viviendo!

4 —¿Tienes razón de enfurecerte tanto?—le respondió el SEÑOR.

5 Jonás salió y acampó al este de la ciudad. Allí hizo una enramada y se sentó bajo su sombra para ver qué iba a suceder con la ciudad. 6 Para aliviarlo de su malestar, Dios el SEÑOR dispuso una planta, la cual creció hasta cubrirle a Jonás la cabeza con su sombra. Jonás se alegró muchísimo por la planta. 7 Pero al amanecer del día siguiente Dios dispuso que un gusano la hiriera, y la planta se marchitó. 8 Al salir el sol, Dios dispuso un viento oriental abrasador. Además, el sol hería a Jonás en la cabeza, de modo que éste desfallecía. Con deseos de morirse, exclamó: «¡Prefiero morir que seguir viviendo!»

9 Pero Dios le dijo a Jonás: —¿Tienes razón de enfurecerte tanto por la planta?

—¡Claro que la tengo!—le respondió—. ¡Me muero de rabia!

10 El SEÑOR le dijo: —Tú te compadeces de una planta que, sin ningún esfuerzo de tu parte, creció en una noche y en la otra pereció. 11 Y de Nínive, una gran ciudad donde hay más de ciento veinte mil personas que no distinguen su derecha de su izquierda, y tanto ganado, ¿no habría yo de compadecerme?

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SALMO DEL DÍA Salmo 115

      1 La gloria, SEÑOR, no es para nosotros;
      no es para nosotros sino para tu nombre,
      por causa de tu amor y tu verdad.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 9:6–16

Dios muestra misericordia y gracia a aquellos a quienes elige.

6 Ahora bien, no digamos que la Palabra de Dios ha fracasado. Lo que sucede es que no todos los que descienden de Israel son Israel. 7 Tampoco por ser descendientes de Abraham son todos hijos suyos. Al contrario: «Tu descendencia se establecerá por medio de Isaac.» 8 En otras palabras, los hijos de Dios no son los descendientes naturales; más bien, se considera descendencia de Abraham a los hijos de la promesa. 9 Y la promesa es ésta: «Dentro de un año vendré, y para entonces Sara tendrá un hijo.»

10 No sólo eso. También sucedió que los hijos de Rebeca tuvieron un mismo padre, que fue nuestro antepasado Isaac. 11 Sin embargo, antes de que los mellizos nacieran, o hicieran algo bueno o malo, y para confirmar el propósito de la elección divina, 12 no en base a las obras sino al llamado de Dios, se le dijo a ella: «El mayor servirá al menor.» 13 Y así está escrito: «Amé a Jacob, pero aborrecí a Esaú.»

14 ¿Qué concluiremos? ¿Acaso es Dios injusto? ¡De ninguna manera! 15 Es un hecho que a Moisés le dice:

«Tendré clemencia de quien yo quiera tenerla,
y seré compasivo con quien yo quiera serlo.»

16 Por lo tanto, la elección no depende del deseo ni del esfuerzo humano sino de la misericordia de Dios.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

20 »Así mismo el reino de los cielos se parece a un propietario que salió de madrugada a contratar obreros para su viñedo. 2 Acordó darles la paga de un día de trabajo y los envió a su viñedo. 3 Cerca de las nueve de la mañana, salió y vio a otros que estaban desocupados en la plaza. 4 Les dijo: “Vayan también ustedes a trabajar en mi viñedo, y les pagaré lo que sea justo.” 5 Así que fueron. Salió de nuevo a eso del mediodía y a la media tarde, e hizo lo mismo. 6 Alrededor de las cinco de la tarde, salió y encontró a otros más que estaban sin trabajo. Les preguntó: “¿Por qué han estado aquí desocupados todo el día?” 7 “Porque nadie nos ha contratado”, contestaron. Él les dijo: “Vayan también ustedes a trabajar en mi viñedo.”

8 »Al atardecer, el dueño del viñedo le ordenó a su capataz: “Llama a los obreros y págales su jornal, comenzando por los últimos contratados hasta llegar a los primeros.” 9 Se presentaron los obreros que habían sido contratados cerca de las cinco de la tarde, y cada uno recibió la paga de un día. 10 Por eso cuando llegaron los que fueron contratados primero, esperaban que recibirían más. Pero cada uno de ellos recibió también la paga de un día. 11 Al recibirla, comenzaron a murmurar contra el propietario. 12 “Estos que fueron los últimos en ser contratados trabajaron una sola hora—dijeron—, y usted los ha tratado como a nosotros que hemos soportado el peso del trabajo y el calor del día.” 13 Pero él le contestó a uno de ellos: “Amigo, no estoy cometiendo ninguna injusticia contigo. ¿Acaso no aceptaste trabajar por esa paga? 14 Tómala y vete. Quiero darle al último obrero contratado lo mismo que te di a ti. 15 ¿Es que no tengo derecho a hacer lo que quiera con mi dinero? ¿O te da envidia de que yo sea generoso?”

16 »Así que los últimos serán primeros, y los primeros, últimos.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.
