THE SERVICE

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—FORGIVENESS IS FOR ME

Forgiveness does not come naturally to human beings. It is expected that humans will defend themselves, lash out when attacked, hold grudges, and bite back. So, when human beings hear that they are forgiven, they may even be suspicious or skeptical.

Jesus tells a parable that contrasts the forgiveness of God with our own unforgiving sinful nature. God forgives our huge debt. Who can comprehend such unexpected mercy? Certainly not unmerciful servants, who refuse to forgive small debts. Have mercy on us, Lord, and teach us to forgive like you!

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. PRIMERA LECTURA Génesis 50:15–21

José se apresuró a perdonar a sus hermanos.

15 Al reflexionar sobre la muerte de su padre, los hermanos de José concluyeron: «Tal vez José nos guarde rencor, y ahora quiera vengarse de todo el mal que le hicimos.» 16 Por eso le mandaron a decir: «Antes de morir tu padre, dejó estas instrucciones: 17 “Díganle a José que perdone, por favor, la terrible maldad que sus hermanos cometieron contra él.” Así que, por favor, perdona la maldad de los siervos del Dios de tu padre.»

Cuando José escuchó estas palabras, se echó a llorar. 18 Luego sus hermanos se presentaron ante José, se inclinaron delante de él y le dijeron: —Aquí nos tienes; somos tus esclavos.

19 —No tengan miedo—les contestó José—. ¿Puedo acaso tomar el lugar de Dios? 20 Es verdad que ustedes pensaron hacerme mal, pero Dios transformó ese mal en bien para lograr lo que hoy estamos viendo: salvar la vida de mucha gente. 21 Así que, ¡no tengan miedo! Yo cuidaré de ustedes y de sus hijos. Y así, con el corazón en la mano, José los reconfortó.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Efesios 4:29—5:2

La bondad, la compasión y el perdón son distintivos de la Iglesia de Dios.

29 Eviten toda conversación obscena. Por el contrario, que sus palabras contribuyan a la necesaria edificación y sean de bendición para quienes escuchan. 30 No agravien al Espíritu Santo de Dios, con el cual fueron sellados para el día de la redención. 31 Abandonen toda amargura, ira y enojo, gritos y calumnias, y toda forma de malicia. 32 Más bien, sean bondadosos y compasivos unos con otros, y perdónense mutuamente, así como Dios los perdonó a ustedes en Cristo.

5 Por tanto, imiten a Dios, como hijos muy amados, 2 y lleven una vida de amor, así como Cristo nos amó y se entregó por nosotros como ofrenda y sacrificio fragante para Dios.

21 Pedro se acercó a Jesús y le preguntó: —Señor, ¿cuántas veces tengo que perdonar a mi hermano que peca contra mí? ¿Hasta siete veces?

22 —No te digo que hasta siete veces, sino hasta setenta y siete veces—le contestó Jesús—.

23 »Por eso el reino de los cielos se parece a un rey que quiso ajustar cuentas con sus siervos. 24 Al comenzar a hacerlo, se le presentó uno que le debía miles y miles de monedas de oro. 25 Como él no tenía con qué pagar, el señor mandó que lo vendieran a él, a su esposa y a sus hijos, y todo lo que tenía, para así saldar la deuda. 26 El siervo se postró delante de él. “Tenga paciencia conmigo—le rogó—, y se lo pagaré todo.” 27 El señor se compadeció de su siervo, le perdonó la deuda y lo dejó en libertad.

28 »Al salir, aquel siervo se encontró con uno de sus compañeros que le debía cien monedas de plata. Lo agarró por el cuello y comenzó a estrangularlo. “¡Págame lo que me debes!”, le exigió. 29 Su compañero se postró delante de él. “Ten paciencia conmigo—le rogó—, y te lo pagaré.” 30 Pero él se negó. Más bien fue y lo hizo meter en la cárcel hasta que pagara la deuda. 31 Cuando los demás siervos vieron lo ocurrido, se entristecieron mucho y fueron a contarle a su señor todo lo que había sucedido.

32 Entonces el señor mandó llamar al siervo. “¡Siervo malvado!—le increpó—. Te perdoné toda aquella deuda porque me lo suplicaste. 33 ¿No debías tú también haberte compadecido de tu compañero, así como yo me compadecí de ti?” 34 Y enojado, su señor lo entregó a los carceleros para que lo torturaran hasta que pagara todo lo que debía.

35 »Así también mi Padre celestial los tratará a ustedes, a menos que cada uno perdone de corazón a su hermano.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.
