THE SERVICE

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—NO ONE CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS

There are more than 2,300 Bible passages that speak about money. Why? Money is a master Satan frequently tempts us to serve. In fact, out of all the masters competing for our service besides God, money is probably at the top of the list. Money provides us with a false comfort and sense of security. Money serves as a source of pride. This week, Jesus’ sharp words identify the impossibility of serving more than one master. More, Jesus teaches that if we dedicate our lives in service to money, money will always let us down. In contrast, God has proven that he is a master worth serving. When we serve God, money is put in its proper place. Instead of it being a master to serve, it becomes a tool in our service of our true Master.

King Solomon knew from experience that if you serve money, you will end up sorely disappointed.

except to feast their eyes on them?

12The sleep of a laborer is sweet,

Saint Paul teaches that serving money will lead to spiritual destruction. But serving God with our money leads to a fulfilling life.

6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

17Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

All money belongs to God; he loans it to us to manage for his glory. Through a parable, Jesus teaches us to be shrewd in the way we use money to serve him.

1Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’

3“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’

5“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

EL SERVICIO

DECIMOQUINTO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—NADIE PUEDE SERVIR A DOS AMOS

Hay más de 2300 pasajes bíblicos que hablan sobre el dinero. ¿Por qué? El dinero es un amo al que Satanás nos tienta con frecuencia a servir. De hecho, de todos los amos que compiten por nuestro servicio, además de Dios, el dinero probablemente encabeza la lista. El dinero nos brinda una falsa comodidad y una sensación de seguridad. CONFESIÓN

Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad.
Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios, que es fiel y justo,
nos los perdonará
y nos limpiará de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados al Señor.
Santo Dios, Padre misericordioso,
    Por naturaleza soy pecador,
        y he pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra.
    No te he amado con todo mi corazón;
    No he amado a otros como debo.
        Merezco tu castigo tanto ahora como por la eternidad.
    Pero Jesús, mi Salvador, ha pagado por mis pecados
        con su sufrimiento inocente y muerte en la cruz.
    Confiando en él, oro: Dios, ten misericordia de mi, un pecador.

ABSOLUCIÓN

Oremos.

Oh Dios, tú nos has dicho que no estemos ansiosos por lo que necesitamos para esta vida. Mueve nuestros corazones para que te busquemos a ti y a tu reino, para que también nos sea concedido todo bien; por tu Hijo, Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, que vive y reina contigo y el Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios, por los siglos de los siglos.

PRIMERA LECTURA Eclesiastés 5:10–20

El rey Salomón sabía por experiencia que, si uno sirve al dinero, acabará muy decepcionado.

10 Quien ama el dinero, de dinero no se sacia.
Quien ama las riquezas nunca tiene suficiente.
¡También esto es absurdo!

11 Donde abundan los bienes,
sobra quien se los gaste;
¿y qué saca de esto su dueño,
aparte de contemplarlos?

12 El trabajador duerme tranquilo,
coma mucho o coma poco.
Al rico sus muchas riquezas
no lo dejan dormir.

13 He visto un mal terrible en esta vida:

riquezas acumuladas que redundan en perjuicio de su dueño,
14 y riquezas que se pierden en un mal negocio.
Y si llega su dueño a tener un hijo,
ya no tendrá nada que dejarle.
15 Tal como salió del vientre de su madre,
así se irá:
desnudo como vino al mundo,
y sin llevarse el fruto de tanto trabajo.

16 Esto es un mal terrible:

que tal como viene el hombre, así se va.
¿Y de qué le sirve
afanarse tanto para nada?
17 Además, toda su vida come en tinieblas,
y en medio de muchas molestias, enfermedades y enojos.

18 Esto es lo que he comprobado: que en esta vida lo mejor es comer y beber, y disfrutar del fruto de nuestros afanes. Es lo que Dios nos ha concedido; es lo que nos ha tocado. 19 Además, a quien Dios le concede abundancia y riquezas, también le concede comer de ellas, y tomar su parte y disfrutar de sus afanes, pues esto es don de Dios. 20 Y como Dios le llena de alegría el corazón, muy poco reflexiona el hombre en cuanto a su vida.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 Timoteo 6:6–10,17–19

San Pablo enseña que servir al dinero conduce a la destrucción espiritual. Pero servir a Dios con nuestro dinero nos lleva a una vida plena.

6 Es cierto que con la verdadera religión se obtienen grandes ganancias, pero sólo si uno está satisfecho con lo que tiene. 7 Porque nada trajimos a este mundo, y nada podemos llevarnos. 8 Así que, si tenemos ropa y comida, contentémonos con eso. 9 Los que quieren enriquecerse caen en la tentación y se vuelven esclavos de sus muchos deseos. Estos afanes insensatos y dañinos hunden a la gente en la ruina y en la destrucción. 10 Porque el amor al dinero es la raíz de toda clase de males. Por codiciarlo, algunos se han desviado de la fe y se han causado muchísimos sinsabores.

17 A los ricos de este mundo, mándales que no sean arrogantes ni pongan su esperanza en las riquezas, que son tan inseguras, sino en Dios, que nos provee de todo en abundancia para que lo disfrutemos. 18 Mándales que hagan el bien, que sean ricos en buenas obras, y generosos, dispuestos a compartir lo que tienen. 19 De este modo atesorarán para sí un seguro caudal para el futuro y obtendrán la vida verdadera.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO (en inglés y karen) Lucas 16:1–13

Todo el dinero pertenece a Dios; él nos lo presta para que lo administremos para su gloria. Mediante una parábola, Jesús nos enseña a ser astutos al usar el dinero para servirle.

16 Jesús contó otra parábola a sus discípulos: «Un hombre rico tenía un administrador a quien acusaron de derrochar sus bienes. 2 Así que lo mandó a llamar y le dijo: “¿Qué es esto que me dicen de ti? Rinde cuentas de tu administración, porque ya no puedes seguir en tu puesto.”

3 El administrador reflexionó: “¿Qué voy a hacer ahora que mi patrón está por quitarme el puesto? No tengo fuerzas para cavar, y me da vergüenza pedir limosna. 4 Tengo que asegurarme de que, cuando me echen de la administración, haya gente que me reciba en su casa. ¡Ya sé lo que voy a hacer!”

5 »Llamó entonces a cada uno de los que le debían algo a su patrón. Al primero le preguntó: “¿Cuánto le debes a mi patrón?”

6 “Cien barriles de aceite”, le contestó él.

El administrador le dijo: “Toma tu factura, siéntate en seguida y escribe cincuenta.”

7 Luego preguntó al segundo: “Y tú, ¿cuánto debes?”

“Cien bultos de trigo”, contestó.

El administrador le dijo: “Toma tu factura y escribe ochenta.”

8 »Pues bien, el patrón elogió al administrador de riquezas mundanas por haber actuado con astucia. Es que los de este mundo, en su trato con los que son como ellos, son más astutos que los que han recibido la luz. 9 Por eso les digo que se valgan de las riquezas mundanas para ganar amigos, a fin de que cuando éstas se acaben haya quienes los reciban a ustedes en las viviendas eternas.

10 »El que es honrado en lo poco, también lo será en lo mucho; y el que no es íntegro en lo poco, tampoco lo será en lo mucho. 11 Por eso, si ustedes no han sido honrados en el uso de las riquezas mundanas, ¿quién les confiará las verdaderas? 12 Y si con lo ajeno no han sido honrados, ¿quién les dará a ustedes lo que les pertenece?

13 »Ningún sirviente puede servir a dos patrones. Menospreciará a uno y amará al otro, o querrá mucho a uno y despreciará al otro. Ustedes no pueden servir a la vez a Dios y a las riquezas.»

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Y creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida, que procede del Padre y del Hijo, que con el Padre y el Hijo recibe una misma adoración y gloria, que habló por los profetas. Y creo en una sola iglesia, santa, apostólica, y universal. Reconozco un solo bautismo para el perdón de los pecados, y espero la resurrección de los muertos y la vida del mundo que ha de venir.
