SERVICE OF THE WORD

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—COUNT THE COST

This week Jesus’ sharp words expose our desire to pursue comfort and avoid pain at all costs. Jesus explains that following him will be hard. Jesus’ disciples will be called to let go of things they love and embrace things we naturally loathe. Jesus promises that discipleship comes with crosses—a unique type of pain. So, Jesus tells us that we must count the cost of following him. He wants us to do that now, ahead of time, rather than waiting until we are in the heat of the moment and emotions are running high. However, our calculations must not only consider what we might give up for Jesus. They also entail calculating what we get through him! When we perceive the infinite blessings we find in Christ, the decisions we just make, while difficult, will be clear. Whatever is lost as we follow Jesus pales in comparison to what we gain.

CONFESSION OF SINS

We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

SECOND READING Philemon 1,7–21

The case of the escaped slave, Onesimus, returning to his owner, Philemon, is a perfect example of the cost in following Jesus. Paul encourages Philemon to free Onesimus and embrace him as a brother.

7Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.

17He went down with them and stood on a level place. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. DECIMOTERCER DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—CALCULA LOS COSTOS

Esta semana, las duras palabras de Jesús revelan nuestro deseo de buscar la comodidad y evitar el dolor a toda costa. Jesús explica que seguirlo será difícil. Sus discípulos serán llamados a dejar ir lo que aman y aceptar lo que detestamos por naturaleza. Jesús promete que el discipulado conlleva cruces, un tipo de dolor único. Por eso, Jesús nos dice que debemos calcular el costo de seguirlo. Quiere que lo hagamos ahora, con anticipación, en lugar de esperar a estar en el calor del momento y con las emociones a flor de piel. Sin embargo, nuestros cálculos no solo deben considerar lo que podríamos renunciar por Jesús, sino también lo que obtenemos a través de él. Cuando percibamos las infinitas bendiciones que encontramos en Cristo, las decisiones que tomemos, aunque difíciles, serán claras. Hemos entrado a la presencia de Dios, quien nos creó para amarlo y servirlo como sus queridos hijos e hijas. Pero lo hemos desobedecido y solo merecemos su ira y su castigo. Por tanto, confesémosle nuestros pecados y roguemos por su misericordia.

Padre misericordioso que estás en los cielos, soy completamente pecador de nacimiento. He pecado contra ti de innumerables formas y no merezco ser llamado hijo tuyo. Pero confiando en Jesús, mi Salvador, oro: Ten piedad de mí según tu amor inagotable. Límpiame de mi pecado y quita mi culpa.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Filemón 1,7–21

El caso del esclavo fugitivo, Onésimo, que regresa con su amo, Filemón, es un ejemplo perfecto del costo de seguir a Jesús. Pablo anima a Filemón a liberar a Onésimo y aceptarlo como hermano.

1 Pablo, prisionero de Cristo Jesús, y el hermano Timoteo,

a ti, querido Filemón, compañero de trabajo,

7 Hermano, tu amor me ha alegrado y animado mucho porque has reconfortado el corazón de los santos.

8 Por eso, aunque en Cristo tengo la franqueza suficiente para ordenarte lo que debes hacer, 9 prefiero rogártelo en nombre del amor. Yo, Pablo, ya anciano y ahora, además, prisionero de Cristo Jesús, 10 te suplico por mi hijo Onésimo, quien llegó a ser hijo mío mientras yo estaba preso. 11 En otro tiempo te era inútil, pero ahora nos es útil tanto a ti como a mí.

SERMÓN Lucas 6:17–26

17 Luego bajó con ellos y se detuvo en un llano. Había allí una gran multitud de sus discípulos y mucha gente de toda Judea, de Jerusalén y de la costa de Tiro y Sidón, 18 que habían llegado para oírlo y para que los sanara de sus enfermedades.
