The First Promise

In the readings for this morning, there is a contrast: on the one hand, we see the devil along with our sinful nature in all its evil, and on the other hand, we see Christ and his grace. Our sins have separated us from God, but Christ came to give us forgiveness and to reconcile us to God.

Opening Song - When God the Spirit Came

Invocation

L. In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

We begin the service by recognizing how we have fallen short of God’s will and desire for our lives, and we receive the good news that we are forgiven in Jesus Christ.

L. Let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C. Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, you should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

L. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ just as he proclaimed to the paralytic: "Take heart, your sins are forgiven.” Let us take this forgiveness to heart and proclaim it to each other in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

L. O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C. Amen.

First Lesson - Genesis 3:8-15

As a result of their sin, Adam and Eve hid from God, showing the spiritual death they had experienced. At that moment they were separated from God and his will. And how did God respond to the first sin, to that act of rebellion? With a promise. In his love, God was going to send his son, who would destroy the power of the devil, death, and sin to reconcile us to God.

8 They heard the voice of the LORD God, who was walking around in the garden during the cooler part of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 The LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 The man said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.”

11 God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?”

12 The man said, “The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 The LORD God said to the woman, “What have you done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The LORD God said to the serpent:

Because you have done this,

you are cursed more than all the livestock,

and more than every wild animal.

You shall crawl on your belly,

and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.

15 I will put hostility between you and the woman,

and between your seed and her seed.

He will crush your head,

and you will crush his heel.

Psalm of the Day - Psalm 51

For the choir director. A psalm by David. When Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba.

1 Be gracious to me, God,

according to your mercy.

Erase my acts of rebellion

according to the greatness of your compassion.

2 Scrub me clean from my guilt.

Purify me from my sin.

3 For I admit my rebellious acts.

My sin is always in front of me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned,

and I have done this evil in your eyes.

So you are justified when you sentence me.

You are blameless when you judge.

5 Certainly, I was guilty when I was born.

I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

6 Since you desire truth on the inside,

in my hidden heart you teach me wisdom.

7 Remove my sin with hyssop, and I will be clean.

Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness.

Let the bones you have crushed celebrate.

9 Hide your face from my sins.

Erase all my guilty deeds.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God.

Renew an unwavering spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence.

Do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation.

Sustain me with a willing spirit.

13 I will teach rebels your ways,

and sinners will turn to you.

14 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,

the God who saves me.

My tongue will shout for joy about your righteousness.

15 Lord, open my lips,

and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 For you do not delight in sacrifice,

or I would give it.

You do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices God wants are a broken spirit.

A broken and crushed heart, O God, you will not despise.

18 As it pleases you, do good for Zion.

Build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then you will be pleased with righteous sacrifices,

burnt offerings and whole offerings.

Then bulls will be offered up on your altar.

Second Lesson - 2 Corinthians 4:13-18

The natural response to God's love is to share that love with others, and we do so fearlessly because we have the sure hope of heaven in Christ Jesus. A famous coach once said: obstacles are what you see when you stop seeing the goal. We do not worry about the problems of this world, because we have our eyes on heaven and on the promises of God.

13 Since we have that same spirit of faith, which corresponds to what is written: “I believed; therefore, I have spoken,” we also believe, and therefore we speak. 14 For we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and bring us (together with you) into his presence. 15 In fact, all this is for your benefit, so that as grace increases, it will overflow to the glory of God, as more and more people give thanks.

16 Therefore we are not discouraged. But even if our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 Yes, our momentary, light trouble produces for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond any comparison. 18 We are not focusing on what is seen, but on what is not seen. For the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal.

Gospel - Marcos 3:20-35

Jesus Christ is the only Savior of the world. Many in his weakness and unbelief do not understand this fact. In the days when Christ walked in this world, his family did not fully understand why he had come and the Pharisees sought to discredit him before the people, but Christ here clearly states that he came to bring forgiveness of sins and to make us his brothers.

20 They went into a house. A crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat a meal. 21 When his own people heard this, they went out to take control of him, because they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”

22 The experts in the law who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “He drives out demons by the ruler of demons.”

23 Jesus called them together and spoke to them in parables. “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand but is finished. 27 On the other hand, no one can enter a strong man’s house to steal his possessions unless he ties up the strong man first. Then he can plunder his house. 28 Amen I tell you: Everything will be forgiven people, their sins and whatever blasphemies they may speak. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.” 30 Jesus said this because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

31 Then his mother and his brothers arrived. While they were standing outside, they sent word to Jesus, calling for him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him. They began to tell him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 He replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 He looked at those who sat around him in a circle and he said, “Look, my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Children's Message

Song - By Grace, I’m Saved

English Sermon -or- Bilingual Sermon

Confession of Faith - The Apostles' Creed

We speak the truths of the faith that have united the church for thousands of years.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Online Connection Card

Please use the link to connect with us online! Let us know that you worshiped with us or submit a prayer request.

General Prayer

Use this time to pray to God about anything that is on your heart and mind. Remember who God is and how he describes himself in the Bible. Focus on his eternal perspective. Consider not only your own life, but also the lives of others. Finally, pray with confidence knowing that God hears you, and pray in the name of your savior, Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Prayer

Pray the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Blessing

Just as God told Aaron to bless his people in this way, we ask God’s blessing on us as we go forth in our lives.

L. The Lord bless us and keep us.
The Lord make his face shine on us and be gracious to us.
The Lord look on us with favor and ☩ give us peace.

C. Amen
