My Power is Made Perfect in Weakness

God's Word is powerful and effective. Through this Word, the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts. However, man has the ability to reject the mighty gospel of God. May we always preach this message of salvation to everyone, even if many reject it. Because whether they believe it or not, God is glorified through the proclamation of his Word.

Opening Song - Brothers, Sisters, Let Us Gladly

Invocation

L. In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

We begin the service by recognizing how we have fallen short of God’s will and desire for our lives, and we receive the good news that we are forgiven in Jesus Christ.

L. Let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C. Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, you should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

L. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ just as he proclaimed to the paralytic: "Take heart, your sins are forgiven.” Let us take this forgiveness to heart and proclaim it to each other in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

L. God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. Help us love you with all our heart, strengthen us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C. Amen.

First Lesson - Ezekiel 2:1-5

Like many of God's prophets, the prophet Ezekiel was sent to preach to a hard-hearted people. Most of them were going to reject his message because for them the Word of God was foolish and weak, but some were always going to believe, because through the gospel that is δυvαμoς, divine dynamite, God can make soft the hard heart of man.

1 He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you.” 2 The Spirit entered into me as he spoke to me and brought me up to my feet. Then I heard him speaking to me.

3 He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to disloyal nations, who have been disloyal to me. They and their fathers have rebelled against me to this very day. 4 These children of mine are brazen-faced and hard-hearted. I am sending you to them, and you are to tell them that this is what the LORD God says. 5 Then, whether they listen or do not listen—for they are a rebellious house—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.

Psalm of the Day - Psalm 143

A psalm by David.

1 LORD, hear my prayer.

Give ear to my cry for mercy.

In your faithfulness, answer me in your righteousness.

2 Do not bring charges against your servant,

because no one living can be righteous before you.

3 For the enemy pursues my soul.

He crushes my life to the ground.

He makes me dwell in dark places like those long dead,

4 so my spirit grows faint inside me.

Within me my heart is devastated.

5 I remember the days of long ago.

I meditate on all your works,

and I consider what your hands have done.

6 I spread out my hands to you.

My soul thirsts for you like a weary land.

Interlude

7 Hurry! Answer me, LORD.

My spirit fails.

Do not hide your face from me,

or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

8 Let me hear about your mercy in the morning,

for I trust in you.

Teach me the way that I should go,

for I lift up my soul to you.

9 Rescue me from my enemies, O LORD,

for I hide myself in you.

10 Teach me to do your will,

for you are my God.

May your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

11 For the sake of your name, O LORD, preserve my life.

In your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.

12 In your mercy, wipe out my enemies,

and destroy all who threaten my life,

for I am your servant.

Second Lesson - 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Through our weakness, God shows his power. Saint Paul is a clear example of that. God did not remove the "thorn in the flesh" not only for Paul's sake but also to show his great power. The great success that Paul had in his ministry is due not to him, but to God and his Word.

7 Therefore, to keep me from becoming arrogant due to the extraordinary nature of these revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me, so that I would not become arrogant. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that he would take it away from me. 9 And he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, because my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will be glad to boast all the more in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may shelter me.

10 That is why I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For whenever I am weak, then am I strong.

Gospel - Mark 6:1-6

The message of Christ for those who believe is wisdom and power, but for those who in their unbelief and hardness of heart reject him, it is a message of weakness and foolishness. Like those in Nazareth, many of our time will reject Christ and our preaching, but let us never stop preaching. As we see in verse 6, after being rejected in Nazareth, Christ "went around the villages teaching."

1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown. His disciples followed him. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did this man learn these things? What is this wisdom that has been given to this man? How is it that miracles such as these are performed by his hands? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own house.” 5 He could not do any miracles there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around the villages teaching.

Children's Message

Song - Salvation Unto Us Has Come

English Sermon -or- Bilingual Sermon

Confession of Faith - The Apostles' Creed

We speak the truths of the faith that have united the church for thousands of years.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

General Prayer

Use this time to pray to God about anything that is on your heart and mind. Remember who God is and how he describes himself in the Bible. Focus on his eternal perspective. Consider not only your own life, but also the lives of others. Finally, pray with confidence knowing that God hears you, and pray in the name of your savior, Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Prayer

Pray the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Blessing

Just as God told Aaron to bless his people in this way, we ask God’s blessing on us as we go forth in our lives.

L. The Lord bless us and keep us.
The Lord make his face shine on us and be gracious to us.
The Lord look on us with favor and ☩ give us peace.

C. Amen
