SERVICIO DIVINO

SEXTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA—ÉL VIVE PARA LLAMARME A VIVIR PARA ÉL

Sin la resurrección de Jesús, me sentiría tentado a vivir únicamente para mí mismo. Al fin y al cabo, debo estar en buena forma antes de poder ser de ayuda para cualquier otra persona, ¿verdad? Creo saber qué es lo correcto para mí, y puedo identificar cuándo otras personas se interponen en el camino de mi superación personal. Si Jesús está muerto, no tengo que preocuparme por lo que dijo ni por lo que piensa.

Pero Él vive, y eso marca la diferencia. Él se encarga de mis necesidades básicas. Promete hacer por mí mucho más de lo que puedo imaginar. Pone personas en mi vida para que yo pueda ayudarlas. Ahora vivo para Él.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Dios todopoderoso, en su gran misericordia ha entregado a su Hijo para morir por ti y por causa de Él perdona todos tus pecados. Como ministro llamado y ordenado por Cristo y por su autoridad, te perdono todos tus pecados en el nombre del Padre, y del T Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

PRIMERA LECTURA Hechos 17:22–31

Dios ha determinado exactamente dónde y cuándo viviríamos, para que podamos arrepentirnos y creer las buenas nuevas de la resurrección de Jesús.

22 Pablo se puso en medio del Areópago y tomó la palabra: —¡Ciudadanos atenienses! Observo que ustedes son sumamente religiosos en todo lo que hacen. 23 Al pasar y fijarme en sus lugares sagrados, encontré incluso un altar con esta inscripción: A UN DIOS DESCONOCIDO. Pues bien, eso que ustedes adoran como algo desconocido es lo que yo les anuncio.

24 »El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que hay en él es Señor del cielo y de la tierra. No vive en templos construidos por hombres, 25 ni se deja servir por manos humanas, como si necesitara de algo. Por el contrario, él es quien da a todos la vida, el aliento y todas las cosas. 26 De un solo hombre hizo todas las naciones para que habitaran toda la tierra; y determinó los períodos de su historia y las fronteras de sus territorios. 27 Esto lo hizo Dios para que todos lo busquen y, aunque sea a tientas, lo encuentren. En verdad, él no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros, 28 “puesto que en él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos”. Como algunos de sus propios poetas griegos han dicho: “De él somos descendientes.”

29 »Por tanto, siendo descendientes de Dios, no debemos pensar que la divinidad sea como el oro, la plata o la piedra: escultura hecha como resultado del ingenio y de la destreza del ser humano. 30 Pues bien, Dios pasó por alto aquellos tiempos de tal ignorancia, pero ahora manda a todos, en todas partes, que se arrepientan. 31 Él ha fijado un día en que juzgará al mundo con justicia, por medio del hombre que ha designado. De ello ha dado pruebas a todos al levantarlo de entre los muertos.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

que no rechazó mi oración

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 Pedro 3:13–22

San Pedro enseña que el bautismo nos salva por medio de la resurrección de Jesucristo.

13 Y a ustedes, ¿quién les va a hacer daño si se esfuerzan por hacer el bien? 14 ¡Dichosos si sufren por causa de la justicia! «No teman lo que ellos temen, ni se dejen asustar.» 15 Más bien, honren en su corazón a Cristo como Señor. Estén siempre preparados para responder a todo el que les pida razón de la esperanza que hay en ustedes. 16 Pero háganlo con gentileza y respeto, manteniendo la conciencia limpia, para que los que hablan mal de la buena conducta de ustedes en Cristo, se avergüencen de sus calumnias. 17 Si es la voluntad de Dios, es preferible sufrir por hacer el bien que por hacer el mal.

18 Porque Cristo murió por los pecados una vez por todas, el justo por los injustos, a fin de llevarlos a ustedes a Dios. Él sufrió la muerte en su cuerpo, pero el Espíritu hizo que volviera a la vida. 19 Por medio del Espíritu fue y predicó a los espíritus encarcelados, 20 que en los tiempos antiguos, en los días de Noé, desobedecieron, cuando Dios esperaba con paciencia mientras se construía el arca. En ella sólo pocas personas, ocho en total, se salvaron mediante el agua, 21 la cual simboliza el bautismo que ahora los salva también a ustedes. El bautismo no consiste en la limpieza del cuerpo, sino en el compromiso de tener una buena conciencia delante de Dios. Esta salvación es posible por la resurrección de Jesucristo, 22 quien subió al cielo y tomó su lugar a la derecha de Dios, y a quien están sometidos los ángeles, las autoridades y los poderes.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

Jesús promete enviar al Espíritu Santo para guiarnos en la fe.

15 »Si ustedes me aman, obedecerán mis mandamientos. 16 Y yo le pediré al Padre, y él les dará otro Consolador para que los acompañe siempre: 17 el Espíritu de verdad, a quien el mundo no puede aceptar porque no lo ve ni lo conoce. Pero ustedes sí lo conocen, porque vive con ustedes y estará en ustedes. 18 No los voy a dejar huérfanos; volveré a ustedes. 19 Dentro de poco el mundo ya no me verá más, pero ustedes sí me verán. Y porque yo vivo, también ustedes vivirán. 20 En aquel día ustedes se darán cuenta de que yo estoy en mi Padre, y ustedes en mí, y yo en ustedes. 21 ¿Quién es el que me ama? CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

Y creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida, que procede del Padre y del Hijo, que con el Padre y el Hijo recibe una misma adoración y gloria, que habló por los profetas. Small Groups & Bible Studies—At St. Peter, our goal is to build lives on Christ, the Rock. INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—HE LIVES TO CALL ME TO LIVE FOR HIM

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would be tempted to live only for myself. After all, I have to be in good shape before I can be of help to anyone else, right? I think I know what’s right for me, and I can identify when other people are standing in the way of my self-improvement. If Jesus is dead, I don’t have to worry about what he said or what he thinks.

But he lives, and it makes a difference. He takes care of my basic needs. He promises to do more for me than I can imagine. He puts people into my life so I can help them. Now I live for him.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

FIRST READING Acts 17:22–31

God has determined exactly where and when we would live so that we can repent and believe the good news of Jesus’ resurrection.

22Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

24“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. SECOND READING 1 Peter 3:13–22

St. Peter teaches that baptism saves us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

13Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 15But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
