SERVICIO DIVINO

CUARTO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO—INMINENTE LLEGADA DE EMANUEL

Emanuel es una persona importante. “Emanuel” significa “Dios con nosotros”. Fue un nombre especial que se le dio a Jesús 700 años antes de su nacimiento. ¿Quién está con nosotros cuando Jesús está con nosotros? Dios mismo. Dios se hizo ser humano de una manera especial, convirtiéndose en verdadero hombre, pero sin dejar de ser Dios.

Dios sigue con nosotros. Lo encontramos de una manera especial cuando nos reunimos con dos o tres personas más para adorarlo. Está tan cerca de nosotros que la emoción de la expectativa es casi indescriptible. Permite que esa emoción te inunde mientras celebras la Navidad esta semana.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS

Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»

Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.

Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Perdónanos, renuévanos, y dirígenos por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, a fin de que tu voluntad sea nuestra alegría y andemos por tus caminos siempre, para gloria de tu nombre. Amén.

LA ABSOLUCIÓN

Dios todopoderoso, nuestro Padre celestial, en su gran misericordia nos ha dado a su Hijo, y por medio de él nos perdona todos nuestros pecados. A los que creen en Jesucristo, Dios les conceda el poder de ser hijos e hijas suyos, y les concede su Espíritu Santo. Todos los que creen y son bautizados serán salvos. Concédenos esto, Señor, a todos nosotros.

PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 7:10–14

Isaías profetiza que una virgen daría a luz a Dios encarnado.

10 El SEÑOR se dirigió a Acaz de nuevo: 11 —Pide que el SEÑOR tu Dios te dé una señal, ya sea en lo más profundo de la tierra o en lo más alto del cielo.

12 Pero Acaz respondió: —No pondré a prueba al SEÑOR, ni le pediré nada.

13 Entonces Isaías dijo: «¡Escuchen ahora ustedes, los de la dinastía de David! ¿No les basta con agotar la paciencia de los hombres, que hacen lo mismo con mi Dios? 14 Por eso, el Señor mismo les dará una señal: La doncella concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamará Emanuel.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.
Te alabamos, Señor.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 1:1–7

Después de miles de años de promesas divinas, Pablo mira hacia atrás y ve que todas ellas se cumplieron cuando Dios se hizo hombre.

Pablo, siervo de Cristo Jesús, llamado a ser apóstol, apartado para anunciar el evangelio de Dios, 2 que por medio de sus profetas ya había prometido en las sagradas Escrituras. 3 Este evangelio habla de su Hijo, que según la naturaleza humana era descendiente de David, 4 pero que según el Espíritu de santidad fue designado con poder Hijo de Dios por la resurrección. Él es Jesucristo nuestro Señor. 5 Por medio de él, y en honor a su nombre, recibimos el don apostólico para persuadir a todas las naciones que obedezcan a la fe. 6 Entre ellas están incluidos también ustedes, a quienes Jesucristo ha llamado.

7 Les escribo a todos ustedes, los amados de Dios que están en Roma, que han sido llamados a ser santos.

Que Dios nuestro Padre y el Señor Jesucristo les concedan gracia y paz.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Mateo 1:18–25

José sabía perfectamente que María daría a luz a un hijo que sería Emanuel, Dios con nosotros.

18 El nacimiento de Jesús, el Cristo, fue así: Su madre, María, estaba comprometida para casarse con José, pero antes de unirse a él, resultó que estaba encinta por obra del Espíritu Santo. 19 Como José, su esposo, era un hombre justo y no quería exponerla a vergüenza pública, resolvió divorciarse de ella en secreto.

20 Pero cuando él estaba considerando hacerlo, se le apareció en sueños un ángel del Señor y le dijo: «José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María por esposa, porque ella ha concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo. 21 Dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados.»

22 Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que el Señor había dicho por medio del profeta: 23 «La virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamarán Emanuel» (que significa «Dios con nosotros»).

24 Cuando José se despertó, hizo lo que el ángel del Señor le había mandado y recibió a María por esposa. 25 Pero no tuvo relaciones conyugales con ella hasta que dio a luz un hijo, a quien le puso por nombre Jesús.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT—IMMINENT ARRIVAL OF EMMANUEL

Emmanuel is an important person. “Emmanuel” means “God with us.” It was a special name given to Jesus already 700 years before he was born. Who is with us when Jesus is with us? God himself. God became a human being in a special way, becoming truly human but remaining God.

God is still with us. We encounter him in a special way when we gather with two or three others in worship. He is so near to us that the thrill of anticipation is almost unbearable. Let it wash over you as you celebrate Christmas this week.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

GOSPEL Matthew 1:18–25

Joseph knew full well that Mary would give birth to a son who would be Emmanuel, God with us.

18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
