SERVICIO DIVINO

DÍA DE PENTECOSTÉS—ÉL VIVE PARA DERRAMAR SU ESPÍRITU

Cuando los discípulos se sentían angustiados ante la ascensión de Jesús al cielo, él les aseguró: «Les conviene que yo me vaya. Si no me voy, el Abogado no vendrá a ustedes; pero si me voy, se lo enviaré» (Juan 16:7). Ese Abogado es el Espíritu Santo. Si Jesús se hubiera quedado en la tumba, el Espíritu Santo no habría tenido razón alguna para entrar en la vida de los discípulos.

Pero Jesús vive, y eso marca la diferencia. El Espíritu otorga fe y propósito a la vida. Pentecostés —la celebración de la llegada especial del Espíritu Santo— es la tercera gran festividad de la Iglesia, junto con la Natividad y la Resurrección. Pentecostés cierra el periodo de cincuenta días posterior a la Pascua y pone fin a la mitad festiva del año litúrgico. La Iglesia se viste de rojo en este día para conmemorar las lenguas de fuego que señalaron el don del Espíritu, así como la sangre de los mártires.

Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. PRIMERA LECTURA Hechos 2:1–21

En Pentecostés, los discípulos proclamaron el Evangelio. A través de sus palabras, el Espíritu Santo desata su poder salvador.

2 Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos juntos en el mismo lugar. 2 De repente, vino del cielo un ruido como el de una violenta ráfaga de viento y llenó toda la casa donde estaban reunidos. 3 Se les aparecieron entonces unas lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. 4 Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en diferentes lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía expresarse.

5 Estaban de visita en Jerusalén judíos piadosos, procedentes de todas las naciones de la tierra. 6 Al oír aquel bullicio, se agolparon y quedaron todos pasmados porque cada uno los escuchaba hablar en su propio idioma. 7 Desconcertados y maravillados, decían: «¿No son galileos todos estos que están hablando? 8 ¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros los oye hablar en su lengua materna? 9 Partos, medos y elamitas; habitantes de Mesopotamia, de Judea y de Capadocia, del Ponto y de Asia, 10 de Frigia y de Panfilia, de Egipto y de las regiones de Libia cercanas a Cirene; visitantes llegados de Roma; 11 judíos y prosélitos; cretenses y árabes: ¡todos por igual los oímos proclamar en nuestra propia lengua las maravillas de Dios!» 12 Desconcertados y perplejos, se preguntaban: «¿Qué quiere decir esto?» 13 Otros se burlaban y decían: «Lo que pasa es que están borrachos.»

14 Entonces Pedro, con los once, se puso de pie y dijo a voz en cuello: «Compatriotas judíos y todos ustedes que están en Jerusalén, déjenme explicarles lo que sucede; presten atención a lo que les voy a decir. 15 Éstos no están borrachos, como suponen ustedes. ¡Apenas son las nueve de la mañana! 16 En realidad lo que pasa es lo que anunció el profeta Joel:

      17 »“Sucederá que en los últimos días—dice Dios—, derramaré mi Espíritu sobre todo el género humano.
      Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán, tendrán visiones los jóvenes
      y sueños los ancianos.
      18 En esos días derramaré mi Espíritu aun sobre mis siervos y mis siervas,
      y profetizarán.
      19 Arriba en el cielo y abajo en la tierra mostraré prodigios:
sangre, fuego y nubes de humo.
      20 El sol se convertirá en tinieblas y la luna en sangre
      antes que llegue el día del Señor, día grande y esplendoroso.
      21 Y todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor será salvo.”

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 Corintios 12:3–11

Cuando Dios derrama su Espíritu, lo hace para beneficio de toda la Iglesia.

3 Por eso les advierto que nadie que esté hablando por el Espíritu de Dios puede maldecir a Jesús; ni nadie puede decir: «Jesús es el Señor» sino por el Espíritu Santo.

4 Ahora bien, hay diversos dones, pero un mismo Espíritu. 5 Hay diversas maneras de servir, pero un mismo Señor. 6 Hay diversas funciones, pero es un mismo Dios el que hace todas las cosas en todos.

7 A cada uno se le da una manifestación especial del Espíritu para el bien de los demás. 8 A unos Dios les da por el Espíritu palabra de sabiduría; a otros, por el mismo Espíritu, palabra de conocimiento; 9 a otros, fe por medio del mismo Espíritu; a otros, y por ese mismo Espíritu, dones para sanar enfermos; 10 a otros, poderes milagrosos; a otros, profecía; a otros, el discernir espíritus; a otros, el hablar en diversas lenguas; y a otros, el interpretar lenguas. 11 Todo esto lo hace un mismo y único Espíritu, quien reparte a cada uno según él lo determina.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

EVANGELIO Juan 7:37–39

Jesús prometió que aquellos que tuvieran sed espiritual serían saciados con el agua viva del Espíritu.

37 En el último día, el más solemne de la fiesta, Jesús se puso de pie y exclamó: —¡Si alguno tiene sed, que venga a mí y beba! 38 De aquel que cree en mí, como dice la Escritura, brotarán ríos de agua viva. 39 Con esto se refería al Espíritu que habrían de recibir más tarde los que creyeran en él. Hasta ese momento el Espíritu no había sido dado, porque Jesús no había sido glorificado todavía.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP

We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.

WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES

Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.

Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.

Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.

Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE

DAY OF PENTECOST—HE LIVES TO POUR OUT HIS SPIRIT

When the disciples were distressed about Jesus ascending into heaven, he assured them, “It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (John 16:7). That Advocate is the Holy Spirit. If Jesus had stayed in the grave, the Holy Spirit would have had no reason to enter the lives of disciples.

But Jesus lives, and it makes a difference. The Spirit provides faith and purpose for life. Pentecost, the celebration of the special arrival of the Holy Spirit, is the third great festival of the Church, along with the Nativity and the Resurrection. Pentecost closes the fifty-day period after Easter and ends the festival half of the church year. The Church dresses in red on this day to commemorate the tongues of fire that marked the Spirit’s gift as well as the blood of the martyrs.

CONFESSION OF SINS

Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:

Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

FIRST READING Acts 2:1–21

On Pentecost, the disciples proclaimed the gospel. Through their words the Holy Spirit unleashes his saving power.

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 12:3–11

When God pours out his Spirit, it is for the benefit of the entire Church.

3Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Jesus promised that those who were spiritually thirsty would be filled with the living water of the Spirit.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
