THE SERVICE

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—THE SON OF MAN IS GOD

Jesus asked, “Who do you say I am?” It’s the most important question in the world, and it is a question every human being must answer. The expected answer may be dead wrong. Some in Jesus’ day thought he was John the Baptist. Some thought he was the prophet Elijah who had come back from the dead. Today plenty of people believe that Jesus existed. They think that Jesus was a wise teacher or a role model for love. Both answers are expected. Both miss the main point.

Jesus is a real human being, the Son of Man. He is also Lord and Savior, the Son of the living God. This unexpected truth is the core of saving faith.

God proclaimed to Moses what he is like. The Church’s job is to proclaim to the world who Christ is and what he is like.

Those who believe that Jesus is both Lord and Savior will be saved.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Lord God, you are worthy to receive thanks and praise from all people. You created the world and all who live in it, and in your mercy you saved us. We give thanks to you for the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Though in very nature God, he took the nature of a servant and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. He offered himself as a sacrifice for sin and redeemed us from its curse and penalty. He rescued us from the terrors of death and restored eternal life with you. He conquered our enemies and gained for us the kingdom of grace and glory.

DÉCIMO TERCER DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—EL HIJO DEL HOMBRE ES DIOS

Jesús preguntó: «¿Quién dicen ustedes que soy yo?». Es la pregunta más importante del mundo, y es una pregunta que todo ser humano debe responder. La respuesta esperada puede ser totalmente errónea. Algunos en tiempos de Jesús pensaban que era Juan el Bautista. Otros creían que era el profeta Elías, quien había resucitado de entre los muertos. Hoy en día, muchas personas creen que Jesús existió. Piensan que Jesús fue un maestro sabio o un modelo de amor. Ambas respuestas son esperadas. Ambas pasan por alto lo esencial.

Jesús es un ser humano real, el Hijo del Hombre. También es Señor y Salvador, el Hijo del Dios viviente. Esta verdad inesperada es el núcleo de la fe salvadora.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.
