THE SERVICE

PENTECOST 11—CHRISTIANS ANSWER DOUBT WITH FAITH

Wherever faith clings to the promises of God, doubt is always lingering. Doubt asks the serpent’s garden question, “Did God really say?” People doubt God’s care, God’s promises, or God’s providence.

The answer to doubt is not found in loud, dramatic demonstrations. The true answer to doubt is found in the still small voice of our Savior God whispering to us in his Word. Through Word and sacrament, Christ reaches out to us with nail-scarred hands, proof of his great love. Jesus gently says, “Why did you doubt?” Our faith is restored. Christians answer doubt with faith.

The Lord answers Elijah’s doubt with the gentle whisper of a gracious promise.

9There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

In all times, good or bad, God carries out his perfect plan for his glory and our salvation.

31What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34Who then is the one who condemns? No one. In the account of Peter walking on water, we see how quickly doubts arise, and how graciously Jesus answers them.

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed 325 & 381 AD

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. En nuestro servicio nos reunimos delante de nuestro Dios todopoderoso para ofrecerle nuestra adoración y alabanza. También nos congregamos para escuchar la santa y poderosa Palabra de Dios y para celebrar sus sacramentos que dan la vida. Por estos medios, Dios fortalece nuestra fe y nos trae siempre más cerca a nuestro hogar eterno. Se invita a la congregación a cantar y hablar las partes del servicio impresas en negrita.

EL SERVICIO

PENTECOSTÉS 11—LOS CRISTIANOS RESPONDEN A LA DUDA CON FE

Dondequiera que la fe se aferra a las promesas de Dios, la duda siempre está al acecho. La duda hace la misma pregunta de la serpiente en el jardín: «¿De veras Dios les dijo…?» Las personas dudan del cuidado de Dios, de sus promesas o de su providencia.

La respuesta a la duda no se encuentra en demostraciones ruidosas y espectaculares. La verdadera respuesta a la duda se encuentra en la voz suave y apacible de nuestro Dios Salvador, que nos habla por medio de su Palabra. Por medio de la Palabra y los sacramentos, Cristo extiende hacia nosotros sus manos marcadas por los clavos, prueba de su gran amor. Jesús nos pregunta con ternura: «¿Por qué dudaste?» Nuestra fe es restaurada. Los cristianos responden a la duda con fe.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 8:28–39

En todo momento, sea bueno o malo, Dios lleva a cabo su plan perfecto para su gloria y nuestra salvación.

28 Ahora bien, sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de quienes lo aman, los que han sido llamados de acuerdo con su propósito. 29 Porque a los que Dios conoció de antemano, también los predestinó a ser transformados según la imagen de su Hijo, para que él sea el primogénito entre muchos hermanos. 30 A los que predestinó, también los llamó; a los que llamó, también los justificó; y a los que justificó, también los glorificó.

31 ¿Qué diremos frente a esto? Si Dios está de nuestra parte, ¿quién puede estar en contra nuestra? 32 El que no escatimó ni a su propio Hijo, sino que lo entregó por todos nosotros, ¿cómo no habrá de darnos generosamente, junto con él, todas las cosas? 33 ¿Quién acusará a los que Dios ha escogido? Dios es el que justifica. 34 ¿Quién condenará? Cristo Jesús es el que murió, e incluso resucitó, y está a la derecha de Dios e intercede por nosotros. 35 ¿Quién nos apartará del amor de Cristo? ¿La tribulación, o la angustia, la persecución, el hambre, la indigencia, el peligro, o la violencia? 36 Así está escrito:

En el relato de Pedro caminando sobre el agua, vemos cuán rápidamente surgen las dudas y con cuánta gracia Jesús responde a ellas.

22 En seguida Jesús hizo que los discípulos subieran a la barca y se le adelantaran al otro lado mientras él despedía a la multitud. 23 Después de despedir a la gente, subió a la montaña para orar a solas. Al anochecer, estaba allí él solo, 24 y la barca ya estaba bastante lejos de la tierra, zarandeada por las olas, porque el viento le era contrario.

25 En la madrugada, Jesús se acercó a ellos caminando sobre el lago. 26 Cuando los discípulos lo vieron caminando sobre el agua, quedaron aterrados. —¡Es un fantasma!—gritaron de miedo.

27 Pero Jesús les dijo en seguida: —¡Cálmense! Soy yo. No tengan miedo.

28 —Señor, si eres tú—respondió Pedro—, mándame que vaya a ti sobre el agua.

29 —Ven—dijo Jesús.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Niceno 325 & 381 d.C.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.

Y creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, engendrado del Padre antes de todos los siglos, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, y no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; por nosotros y por nuestra salvación, él bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María la virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato: Padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las escrituras: Y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.
