THE SERVICE

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST—RESURRECTION HOPE

People think of “hope” as being an optimistic desire. “I hope it doesn’t rain this weekend” simply means that is what you want to happen. Your hope doesn’t mean that will happen. It might pour all weekend. Yet, that is the best the world can offer—an uncertain enthusiasm, a cautious anticipation. Optimism is the cause of that shaky type of hope. In a world as hard as this one, we need more than shaky hope.

Jesus gives us better. He has given us the unbreakable promise of resurrection, a promise rooted in his own resurrection. More, he has given us the promise of eternal life in a breathtakingly beautiful heavenly home. What is the effect of Jesus giving us such promises? We are given a better type of hope . . . a certain hope. We watch and wait for the life that is to come, with the certainty that it will come. For Jesus has made a promise. And one thing Jesus never does is lie!

The second half of Isaiah is written to a people whose world had crumbled to pieces. The Lord gives his people the certain hope of a better world that is to come.

new heavens and a new earth.

in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight
and its people a joy.
19I will rejoice over Jerusalem

St. John is given a vision of our future. The effect? We delight in the certainty of hope provided by the promise of this life to come.

1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5There will be no more night. EL SERVICIO

VIGÉSIMO SEGUNDO DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE PENTECOSTÉS—ESPERANZA DE RESURRECCIÓN

La gente suele pensar en la “esperanza” como un deseo optimista. “Espero que no llueva este fin de semana” simplemente significa que eso es lo que deseas que suceda. Tu esperanza no garantiza que vaya a suceder. Podría llover a cántaros todo el fin de semana. Sin embargo, eso es lo mejor que el mundo puede ofrecer: un entusiasmo incierto, una anticipación cautelosa. El optimismo es la causa de ese tipo de esperanza frágil. En un mundo tan difícil como este, necesitamos algo más que una esperanza frágil.

Jesús nos da algo mejor. Nos ha dado la promesa inquebrantable de la resurrección, una promesa arraigada en su propia resurrección. Más aún, nos ha dado la promesa de la vida eterna en un hogar celestial de una belleza sobrecogedora. ¿Cuál es el efecto de que Jesús nos dé tales promesas? Se nos da una esperanza mejor… una esperanza segura. Velamos y esperamos la vida que ha de venir, con la certeza de que llegará. Porque Jesús ha hecho una promesa. ¡Y una cosa que Jesús jamás hace es mentir!

PRIMERA LECTURA Isaías 65:17–25

La segunda mitad de Isaías está escrita a un pueblo cuyo mundo se había desmoronado. El Señor les da la firme esperanza de un mundo mejor por venir.

17 »Presten atención, que estoy por crear
      un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva.
      No volverán a mencionarse las cosas pasadas,
      ni se traerán a la memoria.
      18 Alégrense más bien, y regocíjense por siempre,
      por lo que estoy a punto de crear:
      Estoy por crear una Jerusalén feliz,
      un pueblo lleno de alegría.
      19 Me regocijaré por Jerusalén

SEGUNDA LECTURA Apocalipsis 22:1–5

A San Juan se le concede una visión de nuestro futuro. ¿El resultado? Nos regocijamos en la certeza de la esperanza que nos brinda la promesa de la vida venidera.

22 Luego el ángel me mostró un río de agua de vida, claro como el cristal, que salía del trono de Dios y del Cordero, 2 y corría por el centro de la calle principal de la ciudad. A cada lado del río estaba el árbol de la vida, que produce doce cosechas al año, una por mes; y las hojas del árbol son para la salud de las naciones. 3 Ya no habrá maldición. El trono de Dios y del Cordero estará en la ciudad. Sus siervos lo adorarán; 4 lo verán cara a cara, y llevarán su nombre en la frente. 5 Ya no habrá noche; no necesitarán luz de lámpara ni de sol, porque el Señor Dios los alumbrará. Y reinarán por los siglos de los siglos.

Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

A los saduceos, que no creían en la resurrección, Jesús les da esta promesa: Nuestro Dios es el Dios de los vivos, porque para él todos viven.

27 Luego, algunos de los saduceos, que decían que no hay resurrección, se acercaron a Jesús y le plantearon un problema: 28 —Maestro, Moisés nos enseñó en sus escritos que si un hombre muere y deja a la viuda sin hijos, el hermano de ese hombre tiene que casarse con la viuda para que su hermano tenga descendencia. 29 Pues bien, había siete hermanos. El primero se casó y murió sin dejar hijos. 30 Entonces el segundo 31 y el tercero se casaron con ella, y así sucesivamente murieron los siete sin dejar hijos. 32 Por último, murió también la mujer. 33 Ahora bien, en la resurrección, ¿de cuál será esposa esta mujer, ya que los siete estuvieron casados con ella?

34 —La gente de este mundo se casa y se da en casamiento—les contestó Jesús—. 35 Pero en cuanto a los que sean dignos de tomar parte en el mundo venidero por la resurrección: ésos no se casarán ni serán dados en casamiento, 36 ni tampoco podrán morir, pues serán como los ángeles. Son hijos de Dios porque toman parte en la resurrección. 37 Pero que los muertos resucitan lo dio a entender Moisés mismo en el pasaje sobre la zarza, pues llama al Señor “el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob”. 38 Él no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos; en efecto, para él todos ellos viven.

Éste es el Evangelio de Dios.

SERMÓN Génesis 32:22–30

22 Pero esa misma noche se levantó, tomó a sus dos mujeres, sus dos siervas y sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado de Jaboc. 23 Los tomó, y los hizo cruzar el arroyo, con todas sus posesiones. 24 De modo que Jacob se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta la salida del sol. 25 Pero cuando ese hombre vio que no podía vencerlo, lo golpeó en la coyuntura de su muslo, y en la lucha el muslo de Jacob se descoyuntó. 26 El hombre dijo: «Déjame ir, porque ya está saliendo el sol.»

Pero Jacob le respondió: «No te dejaré ir, si no me bendices.»

27 Aquel hombre le dijo: «¿Cuál es tu nombre?»

Y él respondió: «Jacob».

28 Y el hombre dijo:«Tu nombre ya no será Jacob, sino Israel;[b] porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.»

29 Entonces Jacob le preguntó: «Ahora hazme saber tu nombre.»

Y aquel hombre respondió: «¿Para qué quieres saber mi nombre?»

Y lo bendijo allí. 30 A ese lugar Jacob le puso por nombre «Peniel»,[c] porque dijo: «He visto a Dios cara a cara, y sigo con vida.»

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, y de todo lo visible e invisible.
