SERVICE OF THE WORD

PENTECOST 8—UNDIVIDED ATTENTION ON USEFUL RESOURCES

Money. Possessions. Perhaps more than anything else, those things have the power to turn our attention away from what is truly important. It is no surprise, therefore, that Jesus frequently teaches about wealth. Christ wants us to understand that it is our heavenly Father who provides us with those useful resources. But we need to know why our Father gives them: what they are useful for, and what they are not useful for. Those resources cannot give purpose or meaning to our lives on earth. They cannot give us security for life after this earth. However, the blessings God provides can bring some joy to our lives. More importantly, our wealth is extremely useful in our efforts to serve God and others. This week let us give our undivided attention to what Christ says about the useful resources our gracious Father provides to us.

CONFESSION OF SINS

We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

O Lord, grant us wisdom to recognize the treasures you have stored up for us in heaven that we may never despair but always rejoice and be thankful for the riches of your grace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

King Solomon, possibly the wealthiest man who ever lived, learned by experience the limited value of earthly possessions.

1The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:

2“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”

12I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! 14I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

18I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. 24A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

SECOND READING Colossians 3:1–11

Believers are liberated from the idolatry of greed as they put to death their sinful nature and are renewed in their new life in Christ.

1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Greed’s folly is felt in life and will be exposed in death. Through a parable, Jesus gives us a strong warning against greed.

13Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

16And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’ 20“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles' Creed ~150 AD

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PENTECOSTÉS 8—ATENCIÓN INDIVISA EN LOS RECURSOS ÚTILES

Dinero. Posesiones. Tal vez más que cualquier otra cosa, estas tienen el poder de desviar nuestra atención de lo que realmente importa. No es de sorprender, entonces, que Jesús enseñe con frecuencia acerca de la riqueza. Cristo quiere que entendamos que es nuestro Padre celestial quien nos provee esos recursos útiles. Pero también necesitamos saber por qué nuestro Padre nos los da: para qué son útiles y para qué no lo son. Esos recursos no pueden darle propósito ni significado a nuestra vida en la tierra. 12 Yo, el Maestro, reiné en Jerusalén sobre Israel. 13 Y me dediqué de lleno a explorar e investigar con sabiduría todo cuanto se hace bajo el cielo. ¡Penosa tarea ha impuesto Dios al género humano para abrumarlo con ella! 14 Y he observado todo cuanto se hace en esta vida, y todo ello es absurdo, ¡es correr tras el viento!

2:18 Aborrecí también el haberme afanado tanto en esta vida, pues el fruto de tanto afán tendría que dejárselo a mi sucesor, 19 y ¿quién sabe si éste sería sabio o necio? Sin embargo, se adueñaría de lo que con tantos afanes y sabiduría logré hacer en esta vida. ¡Y también esto es absurdo!

20 Volví a sentirme descorazonado de haberme afanado tanto en esta vida, 21 pues hay quienes ponen a trabajar su sabiduría y sus conocimientos y experiencia, para luego entregarle todos sus bienes a quien jamás movió un dedo. ¡Y también esto es absurdo, y un mal enorme! 22 Pues, ¿qué gana el hombre con todos sus esfuerzos y con tanto preocuparse y afanarse bajo el sol? 23 Todos sus días están plagados de sufrimientos y tareas frustrantes, y ni siquiera de noche descansa su mente. ¡Y también esto es absurdo!

24 Nada hay mejor para el hombre que comer y beber, y llegar a disfrutar de sus afanes. He visto que también esto proviene de Dios, 25 porque ¿quién puede comer y alegrarse, si no es por Dios? 26 En realidad, Dios da sabiduría, conocimientos y alegría a quien es de su agrado; en cambio, al pecador le impone la tarea de acumular más y más, para luego dárselo todo a quien es de su agrado. Y también esto es absurdo; ¡es correr tras el viento!

SEGUNDA LECTURA Colosenses 3:1–11

Los creyentes son liberados de la idolatría de la avaricia al hacer morir su naturaleza pecaminosa y ser renovados en su nueva vida en Cristo.

3 Ya que han resucitado con Cristo, busquen las cosas de arriba, donde está Cristo sentado a la derecha de Dios. 2 Concentren su atención en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra, 3 pues ustedes han muerto y su vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios. 4 Cuando Cristo, que es la vida de ustedes, se manifieste, entonces también ustedes serán manifestados con él en gloria.

5 Por tanto, hagan morir todo lo que es propio de la naturaleza terrenal: inmoralidad sexual, impureza, bajas pasiones, malos deseos y avaricia, la cual es idolatría. 6 Por estas cosas viene el castigo de Dios. 7 Ustedes las practicaron en otro tiempo, cuando vivían en ellas. 8 Pero ahora abandonen también todo esto: enojo, ira, malicia, calumnia y lenguaje obsceno. 9 Dejen de mentirse unos a otros, ahora que se han quitado el ropaje de la vieja naturaleza con sus vicios, 10 y se han puesto el de la nueva naturaleza, que se va renovando en conocimiento a imagen de su Creador. 11 En esta nueva naturaleza no hay griego ni judío, circunciso ni incircunciso, culto ni inculto, esclavo ni libre, sino que Cristo es todo y está en todos.

La necedad de la avaricia se siente en la vida y será expuesta en la muerte. Por medio de una parábola, Jesús nos da una seria advertencia contra la avaricia.

—Maestro, dile a mi hermano que comparta la herencia conmigo.

14 —Hombre—replicó Jesús—, ¿quién me nombró a mí juez o árbitro entre ustedes? 15 »¡Tengan cuidado!—advirtió a la gente—. Absténganse de toda avaricia; la vida de una persona no depende de la abundancia de sus bienes.

16 Entonces les contó esta parábola: —El terreno de un hombre rico le produjo una buena cosecha. 17 Así que se puso a pensar: “¿Qué voy a hacer? No tengo dónde almacenar mi cosecha.” 18 Por fin dijo: “Ya sé lo que voy a hacer: derribaré mis graneros y construiré otros más grandes, donde pueda almacenar todo mi grano y mis bienes. 19 Y diré: Alma mía, ya tienes bastantes cosas buenas guardadas para muchos años. Descansa, come, bebe y goza de la vida.” 20 Pero Dios le dijo: “¡Necio! Esta misma noche te van a reclamar la vida. ¿Y quién se quedará con lo que has acumulado?”

21 »Así le sucede al que acumula riquezas para sí mismo, en vez de ser rico delante de Dios.

Éste es el Evangelio del Señor.

CONFESIÓN DE LA FE El Credo Apostólico ~150 d.C.

Creo en Dios Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.

Y creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor; que fue concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo, nació de la virgen María, padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato, fue crucificado, murió, y fue sepultado; descendió al infierno; al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos, subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha, de Dios Padre Todopoderoso; y de allí vendrá de nuevo a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

Creo en el Espíritu Santo, la santa iglesia cristiana, la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección del cuerpo, y la vida eterna. Amén.
