PRIMER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA—EXACTAMENTE LO QUE NECESITO: UN CAMPEÓN
Reconozco mi incapacidad para defenderme de los enemigos espirituales. El mundo está en mi contra, pero busco maneras de imitarlo. Intento dominar mi propia carne pecaminosa, pero reconozco deseos en mí que luchan contra mi alma. Y cuando se trata del diablo, caigo en la tentación una y otra vez. Mi muerte inminente prueba que he pecado.
Me doy cuenta de que lo que realmente necesito es un campeón. Dios Padre también lo comprendió. Envió a su Hijo para ser mi Salvador. Mediante la obediencia del Hijo de Dios, tengo la victoria sobre mis enemigos.

CONFESIÓN DE LOS PECADOS
Hermanos y hermanas, Jesús nos mandó: «Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.»
Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos estamos engañando, y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios es fiel y justo para perdonarnos y purificarnos de toda maldad.
Confesemos nuestros pecados contra Dios y contra nuestros prójimos:
Dios de misericordia, confesamos que estamos esclavizados por el pecado y no podemos liberarnos nosotros mismos. Hemos pecado contra ti en pensamiento, palabra y obra, por lo que hemos hecho y por lo que hemos dejado de hacer. No te hemos amado de todo corazón; no hemos amado a nuestros prójimos como a nosotros mismos. Por amor de tu Hijo Jesucristo, ten piedad de nosotros. Oremos.
Dios y Padre Poderoso, nuestro Señor Jesús se adentró en el desierto para enfrentar las tentaciones del diablo, pero no sucumbió a las mentiras de Satanás ni flaqueó en su determinación de salvar al mundo de la prisión del infierno. Fortalece nuestra fe con su poderosa victoria para que podamos luchar contra las fuerzas del mal con valentía y confianza; por tu Hijo, Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, que vive y reina contigo y el Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios, por los siglos de los siglos.

PRIMERA LECTURA Génesis 3:1–15
Dios prometió enviar un campeón para hacer lo que yo no pude, derrotar a mi mayor enemigo.
3 La serpiente era más astuta que todos los animales del campo que Dios el SEÑOR había hecho, así que le preguntó a la mujer: —¿Es verdad que Dios les dijo que no comieran de ningún árbol del jardín?
2 —Podemos comer del fruto de todos los árboles—respondió la mujer—. 3 Pero, en cuanto al fruto del árbol que está en medio del jardín, Dios nos ha dicho: “No coman de ese árbol, ni lo toquen; de lo contrario, morirán.”
4 Pero la serpiente le dijo a la mujer: —¡No es cierto, no van a morir! 5 Dios sabe muy bien que, cuando coman de ese árbol, se les abrirán los ojos y llegarán a ser como Dios, conocedores del bien y del mal.
6 La mujer vio que el fruto del árbol era bueno para comer, y que tenía buen aspecto y era deseable para adquirir sabiduría, así que tomó de su fruto y comió. Luego le dio a su esposo, y también él comió. 7 En ese momento se les abrieron los ojos, y tomaron conciencia de su desnudez. Por eso, para cubrirse entretejieron hojas de higuera.
8 Cuando el día comenzó a refrescar, oyeron el hombre y la mujer que Dios andaba recorriendo el jardín; entonces corrieron a esconderse entre los árboles, para que Dios no los viera. 9 Pero Dios el SEÑOR llamó al hombre y le dijo:
—¿Dónde estás?
10 El hombre contestó: —Escuché que andabas por el jardín, y tuve miedo porque estoy desnudo. Por eso me escondí. 11 —¿Y quién te ha dicho que estás desnudo?—le preguntó Dios—. ¿Acaso has comido del fruto del árbol que yo te prohibí comer? 12 Él respondió: —La mujer que me diste por compañera me dio de ese fruto, y yo lo comí.
13 Entonces Dios el SEÑOR le preguntó a la mujer: —¿Qué es lo que has hecho? —La serpiente me engañó, y comí—contestó ella.
14 Dios el SEÑOR dijo entonces a la serpiente:
«Por causa de lo que has hecho,
¡maldita serás entre todos los animales,
tanto domésticos como salvajes!
Te arrastrarás sobre tu vientre,
y comerás polvo todos los días de tu vida.
15 Pondré enemistad entre tú y la mujer,
y entre tu simiente y la de ella;
su simiente te aplastará la cabeza,
pero tú le morderás el talón.»
Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Romanos 5:12–19
La derrota de Adán significó la muerte para mí. La victoria de Cristo significa vida para mí.
12 Por medio de un solo hombre el pecado entró en el mundo, y por medio del pecado entró la muerte; fue así como la muerte pasó a toda la humanidad, porque todos pecaron.
13 Antes de promulgarse la ley, ya existía el pecado en el mundo. Es cierto que el pecado no se toma en cuenta cuando no hay ley; 14 sin embargo, desde Adán hasta Moisés la muerte reinó, incluso sobre los que no pecaron quebrantando un mandato, como lo hizo Adán, quien es figura de aquel que había de venir.
15 Pero la transgresión de Adán no puede compararse con la gracia de Dios. Pues si por la transgresión de un solo hombre murieron todos, ¡cuánto más el don que vino por la gracia de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, abundó para todos! 16 Tampoco se puede comparar la dádiva de Dios con las consecuencias del pecado de Adán. El juicio que lleva a la condenación fue resultado de un solo pecado, pero la dádiva que lleva a la justificación tiene que ver con una multitud de transgresiones. 17 Pues si por la transgresión de un solo hombre reinó la muerte, con mayor razón los que reciben en abundancia la gracia y el don de la justicia reinarán en vida por medio de un solo hombre, Jesucristo.
18 Por tanto, así como una sola transgresión causó la condenación de todos, también un solo acto de justicia produjo la justificación que da vida a todos. 19 Porque así como por la desobediencia de uno solo muchos fueron constituidos pecadores, también por la obediencia de uno solo muchos serán constituidos justos.
Ésta es la Palabra de Dios.

El campeón de los demonios y el campeón de la humanidad se enfrentan. Jesús gana.
1 Luego el Espíritu llevó a Jesús al desierto para que el diablo lo sometiera a tentación. 2 Después de ayunar cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, tuvo hambre. 3 El tentador se le acercó y le propuso: —Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ordena a estas piedras que se conviertan en pan. 4 Jesús le respondió: —Escrito está: “No sólo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios.”
5 Luego el diablo lo llevó a la ciudad santa e hizo que se pusiera de pie sobre la parte más alta del templo, y le dijo: 6 —Si eres el Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo. Porque escrito está:
“Ordenará que sus ángeles
te sostengan en sus manos,
para que no tropieces con piedra alguna.”
7 —También está escrito: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios”—le contestó Jesús. 8 De nuevo lo tentó el diablo, llevándolo a una montaña muy alta, y le mostró todos los reinos del mundo y su esplendor. 9 —Todo esto te daré si te postras y me adoras. 10 —¡Vete, Satanás!—le dijo Jesús—. 9 A algunos que, confiando en sí mismos, se creían justos y que despreciaban a los demás, Jesús les contó esta parábola: 10 «Dos hombres subieron al templo a orar; uno era fariseo, y el otro, recaudador de impuestos. 11 El fariseo se puso a orar consigo mismo: “Oh Dios, te doy gracias porque no soy como otros hombres—ladrones, malhechores, adúlteros—ni mucho menos como ese recaudador de impuestos. 12 Ayuno dos veces a la semana y doy la décima parte de todo lo que recibo.” 13 En cambio, el recaudador de impuestos, que se había quedado a cierta distancia, ni siquiera se atrevía a alzar la vista al cielo, sino que se golpeaba el pecho y decía: “¡Oh Dios, ten compasión de mí, que soy pecador!” 14 »Les digo que éste, y no aquél, volvió a su casa justificado ante Dios. INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP
We offer a service in Spanish with translations in English for the whole family in the Walker’s Square & Walker's Point communities. In our service, we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God’s holy and powerful word and to celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home. The congregation is invited to join in singing the songs and in speaking the parts of the service printed in bold.
WORSHIP INFORMATION & NOTES
Restrooms—There is one restroom located by the entrance of the church. Additional restrooms are also located downstairs.
Children in worship—We encourage all of our children to remain and participate with us in the service. However, if you are in need of a quiet space for your child, we do have a private room available by the entrance of the church.
Offering—If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate.
Member-only communion—We ask only communicant members of St. Peter and others in fellowship with the WELS to participate in communion today. For more information about this practice, please read more at stpeter.link/communion.

DIVINE SERVICE
FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT—EXACTLY WHAT I NEED: A CHAMPION
I recognize my inability to defend myself against spiritual enemies. The world is against me, but I look for ways to imitate it. I try to master my own sinful flesh, but I recognize desires in myself that war against my soul. And when it comes to the devil, I fall into temptation again and again. My impending death proves that I have sinned.
I realize that what I really need is a champion. God the Father realized it too. He sent his Son to be my Savior. Through the obedience of the Son of God, I have victory over my enemies.

CONFESSION OF SINS
Brothers and sisters, Jesus commanded us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.”
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins against God and against our neighbors:
Merciful God, we confess that we are enslaved by sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and direct us through your Holy Spirit so that your will may be our joy and that we may always walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.
ABSOLUTION
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in his great mercy has given us his Son, and through him forgives us our sins. God grants to those who believe in Jesus Christ the power to be his sons and daughters and the gift of his Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this to all of us, Lord.

Mighty God and Father, our Lord Jesus walked into the wilderness to face the devil’s temptations, but he did not succumb to Satan’s lies or falter in his resolve to save the world from the prison of hell. Bolster our faith by his mighty victory that we may battle against the forces of evil with courage and confidence; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

God promised to send a champion to do what I could not, defeating my greatest enemy.
1Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Adam’s defeat meant death for me. Christ’s victory means life for me.
12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—
13To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.
15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
18Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
